Wales on (digital) Canvas

Do you sometimes have a dilemma like me?

What is it about?

Well, sometimes, it happened to me that the pictures I made were so bad, due to the very bad weather or my own bad mood but I neither wanted to keep them nor to throw them away.

That is my dilemma.

What should I do with them, then?

A very good German photographer friend taught me how to save my travel story in another form.

"Paint them", he easily told me.

Five years ago when my son was only 10 years old, he asked us to go to England for 2 weeks during the Easter Holiday in order to fresh up his English.

That was incredible for me. He was ONLY 10 years old.

However we didn´t reject his request. We only looked for a boarding school which had experience with very young foreign children for him.

The school we found was in Reading, just 50 miles away from London.

My son didn´t have any fear. He was too young to know it but his over-protecting mother had.

So I flew with him to Heathrow, took a train to Reading and caught a cab to the school.

And I remained in the UK for the whole 2 weeks. I needed to be sure that I could reach him anytime he happened to need me (or I happened to need him!!!!).

Well, I was crazy, I know.   BUT it was the first time my small child stayed alone with strangers for quite a long period of time.

If you are a mother, you will understand me (I hope!!!!).

However, he didn´t need me but he called me shortly every evening to tell me about whatever he experianced on that day.

Well, we had been the best friends for each other for 10 years, you know. We had been really used to talking together  just about anything everyday.

And what did I do during those 2 weeks? I had sightseeing, of course.

I took a train to Wales, wanted to while away the time and enjoyed myself a bit.

BUT I hardly had any goodtime. Two weeks seemed to be never ending  although I was much impressed with the hospitality of the Welsh.

I was not lucky with the weather and my mind was occupied with the worry about my child´s well being. Stupid mother!!!!

It was not surprising, then, that I hardly produced good pictures in that trip.

Almost all pictures seemed to be glooooomy.

But just for you, my friends, I painted them...with a photo managing programm, of course.

My name is Yabua.....not Monet. Alright?

Well, GG. I am practically a computer idiot. I can´t and I don´t have any will to use any difficult program. And I try to use it as little as possible.

BTW, I read your blog on cell phone. I an glad that you have grown up. In my opinion, only immature people stick themselves with images.

Have a nice weekend, GG.

YB : ACDsee? I thought you used some high tech kickass program...

You're being modest. I know it's not easy, I do it too myself.

I can never get it to turn out the way I like it.

Before I play with a picture, I have an idea what I want to make it look like, but I can never get the right effect that I was after.

Usually the ones I like are outcomes by chance. I didn't mean to make it like that, but it fluked.

ACDC 10 for which you have to pay. A friend said we can also use Gimp which is free of charge but it is more difficult.
I am happy that you like it but I am not proud because it is the computer that worked for me. I didn´t do it myself.

Panya, a further point is that Monmouthshire should in fact be English, but they forgot to implement it. As a result the County is sometimes Welsh and Sometimes English, whichever suits their purpose
The official title of the Crown Prince is the "Prince of Wales".

Noonin,
I know that you are British and I should not argue with you about the knowledge on your own country but are you sure the Tintern abbey is in England?
My guidebook (Dorling Kindersley : main contributor Michael Leapman) stated that it is in Wales (Monmouthshire).

Actually it doesn´t matter where it is. I like it. I always like ruins of abbeys. Don´t know why. Maybe when I was born last time, I was a nun!

The Welsh are as racist as any other Nation.

There is an ancient animosity between the English and the Welsh, all those beautiful castles were built to subjugate the Welsh.

You are Thai and your appearance makes you a non English, so no problem.

Mostly it is a friendly rivalry now!

Stal, they were really kind and non racist folks.
Of course, I only talked about my feeling I had for 2 weeks there.
However, they were very proud of their culture. There were everywhere campaigns of having Welsh language in use again. I saw several advertisements of bilingual (Welsh and English) Kindergartens.
I didn´t drive there as I started to really drive in Germany, I have not used to driving on the other side. I travelled with the Freedom of Wales Travel Pass which costed 45 pounds (I think) for 8 days with the condition that I must take a train after 9 o´clock but a bus at anytime.
I found infrastucture in the UK worse than in Germany but this didn´t mean that they were bad esp. for a tourist who was not in hurry like me.

I think this is a very good idea for the many pictures which don't get into the 'favorite' list but which are not worth throwing away. It's difficult to comment without knowing what the originals were like, but it seems to work well with some of the pictures and not so well with the others.

Some pictures have too much of a blue tinge to them, and some end up looking like sort of toy pics, but some of the more countryside ones come out very well in the final version.

It probably wouldn't work too well with pictures that are too busy, like inside a market, or those with a lot of detail. But it might work very well on those which have movement.

An interesting experiment which I want to try. Thanks for the idea.

Only been there once in 1977, driving around. Beautiful nature and landscape but roadsigns incomprehensible, no wonder they were easily absorbed by the Brits (no offense meant). I prefer European architecture and Chinese though. Food I remember was nothing to write home about. But dramatic countryside, and my impression is they are a peaceful and non-agressive people.

Now they are a little bit less ugly than the original ones (at least in my opinon!)
The original photos were made with my SLR Nikon and slide films, then I scanned them to PC myself, so they also have traces of dust and scratches.

Re C15
Alien,
In my opinion, whatever we (or the persons we love) create out of heart, sincerity, pleasure or peacefulness is valuable.
My son is extreamly bad at art but I keep all of his drawings and paintings in a special album which I open and enjoy by myself up and now.
We also put his works from the school art hours in the living room and proudly show them to some visitors.
I don´t care how people think about them. I love them because I love the person who created them.
That´s all which matters.

In another word, I don´t think it´s necessary for you to put your paintings on a high wall or let it be seen only by those with bad eyesight.
If you make it yourself (with or without help from numbers) and it makes you happy, then it is beautiful.

Yabua - a long time ago, one of my aunts had finished a painting of "The Last Supper". I thought she must be a great artist. She showed me that she did it by using a "Paint by numbers" kit. You get a canvas and it has all of these lines in it. Each line has a number in it. Each number corresponds to a particular color of paint. If you put the right color in the right space, you come out with a painting that the manufacturer wants you to get. Ever since i saw that my aunt did that, I have been meaning to buy one and paint something myself. I am great at writing stories and such but i am the world's worst painter. Not exactly, I do great at painting my house or painting a room, etc. I just can't paint art. Anyway, I never bought one. I think if I go to a hobby store, i maight find a "paint by numbers" that I could do, but I'm not sure. It was may years ago that I saw one. The other thing is, if you get too close to a "paint by numbers" painting, you can till it is a paint by numbers. Doesn't matter to me, if I got one, I would just be glad tha tI just finished the best painting I ever did. I would just have to put it high on the wall so nobody could see it close up. Either that or only invite people with bad eyesight to my house. At least they would compliment my paintings.

Yabua 8. My mother is Welsh, I have an entire village near Pontypool who are all relatives and another near Tonypandy. I have both lived there and holidayed there for many years.
The Welsh are friendly not because they are Welsh but because they are country folk. It is normal behavior to a stranger in Wales, or the Cotswolds or even the South Downs. Walk down my village in Thailand and everyone says "Bai nai" or "Sawadee",
The English, Welsh, Scots, Irish all make jokes, sick or otherwise about each other, it is part of our culture, foreigners rarely understand it.
Incidentally most English think the traditional Welsh greeting, "iechyd da" (Yakky Dai) means "good day", in fact it means "Good health" and can be used as a greeting and as a toast when drinking a pint of beer.

Hi DS,
Did you write me from USA or you are still in Thailand?

Catherine Zeta Jones was born in Mumble, you know? And her first son´s name Dylan came from the name of the most famous Welsh poet Dylan Thomas who was born in Swansea. I was also in Swansea but the pictures I made there are so bad that even the painting program can not help.

BTW, you may mix up 2 very smart guys with each other. Sean Connery was produced by Scotland. Wales produced Anthony Hopskin (I think!!!).
