Our host in the Black Forest is somehow amazing. The husband was the one who welcomed guests and prepared extreamly nice and rich breakfast, the wife dealed with money when we wanted to pay. We were not disappointed with the German standard of living and hospitality at all. The very affordable rooms were spotless clean and the food was delicious even when it was only a small pension in a tiny village. Piak even asked for the business card of the place for her next visit to the Black Forest somewhen. Unfortunately, it rained for the whole night and didn´t stop until late morning. I drove slowly through very thick fog uphill to the view point, recommended by our kind host. We saw nothing, though, but fog and a lovely family who tried to fly kite when there was no wind at all.
Then I drove along small country roads northwards without any specific destination. I just wanted to provide P&P chances to see the real Black Forest as it is. We only planed to reach the middle part of the region in the afternoon so that the girls could see typical middle Black Forest towns like Gutach and Wolfach before I dropped them out in Heidelberg. And these were what we saw.....
Typical landscape of the upper Black Forest.
The Black Forest is well served by all kinds of public transportation.
The sign of a local restaurant tells visitors about their beloved Baden white wine.
Fog enhances the beauty of colourful leaves.
The empty and lonely children playground.
A monastery which looks more like a villa in southern Europe.
A tram line in a village
Farmhouses amidst wineyards and vegetable plantations. That was all!!!! and it had already been late afternoon. We almost missed our lunch, by the way, because most restaurants in the Black Forest villages close after 2 PM. The waitress in a restaurant who kindly allowed us to get in demanded us to make a quick decision what we wanted to eat and we complied obediently. Surprisingly she was friendly at once after that and the food was delicious as typical Black Forest dishes should be. After that, luck left us alone with our fate!!!!. There were road constructions and accidents which cause several detours and my good old Miss Daisy was probably so dizzy that she often led us to wrong directions. After struggling hard to reach the Autobahn we need for Heidelberg, we had to give up the plan to see the middle Black Forest as the time didn´t allow us anymore. Still, I could put P&P out at a hotel in Heidelberg at almost 6 o´clock and I reach home alone around 2 hours after that. It was a bit scary for me as I never like driving and I even hate driving at night. As a host and a senior friend, I felt rather guilty that my travel plan was not realistic and made my guests a wrong expectation. So, after sending my son to school in the morning and the girls came back from Heidelberg, although no one complained anything at all, I drove my guests to photograph more leaves on the following days before they left. Do you like to see what we saw in my neighbourhood?
My town´s high school which was once a residence castle of the House of Nassau.
The town in autumn
Ponies in the fog from our neighbour village
A wild apple for a pony
Walk the dogs in the fog
Roadside trees
Well, that was it!!! I hope you enjoy travelling with me a bit. Sometimes the Nation weblog makes my heart so dry that I want to leave it but several of you are so nice that I still wish to share some wonderful moments in my life with you. Life is actually so beautiful if we open the mind for what our eyes can see. That is what I think. What about you?
