With one festival just ended, there's another to look forward to.The 6th World Film Festival of Bangkok has just confirmed its complete lineup, and it's impressive, featuring the gorgeous-looking Thai romantic drama A Moment in June as the opener, the Rolling Stones' concert film Shine a Light, as the closer, and a load of highlights that include the Southeast Asian premiere of the Israeli animated w....

The theme of this year's Bangkok Experimental Film Festival was "The more things change ..." I took the ellipses to mean I could fill in a blank with "... the more things stay the same." Or, maybe not. Maybe things are different.BEFF has been held intermittently since 1997. The last one was held at the end of 2005 in Lumpini Park. Before that, I'm not sure where it was held. Thoug....

Directed by Hta Haw KohProduced by Th'blay PawScreened on November 1, 2007 at the 5th World Film Festival of BangkokWhile the film is probably more suitably confined to refugee-camp workshops and organising meetings, the people depicted in the Karen docu-drama, The Songs of Eh Doh Shi, are yearning to be free.Just before its first public screening in Thailand as part of the World Film Festival of Ban....

The World Film Festival of Bangkok wrapped up on Sunday. I didn't see as many of the films as I would have liked, mainly because I was working. Anyway, even if I had devoted all my time and energy to the festival, I still would have missed some good films. That's just how those things go.The Harvest of Talents Awards went to:Best film: Import Export (Austria, 2006), directed by Ulrich SeidlBest artis....

A year after it screened at the 4th World Film Festival of Bangkok, Tsai Ming-liang's surreal drama, I Don't Want to Sleep Alone, opens this week in a limited run at House on RCA.Lee Kang-sheng stars as a guy who is beaten up in Kuala Lumpur, at the height of the haze season. He finds himself in the care of a Malay man and a Chinese-Malaysian woman.I didn't get the chance to see this film last year, ....

Review: 881

The Singaporean musical, 881, is a lot to take in. It starts out with fast-paced narration to explain who all the characters are, and it's revealed, right at the very beginning, that one of the lead characters will die of cancer at the age of 25. So you can pretty much predict that there will be plenty of melodrama in store, even if much of the film is a whimsical affair. The best thing to do is to s....

Review: Tough Enough

Tough Enough (Knallhart) is a German coming-of-age picture that is fairly conventional: 15-year-old kid, bullied at school, is desperate to escape the brutalization, wants to stand up for himself, does so, but doesn't like what he's become. It's the same kind of story arc that's probably been done time and again. But what makes Tough Enough so engaging are the characters, and they way they play off ea....

In Bamako, the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund are on trial in a village square in Mali. Eloquent testimony is given as to how Africa has routinely come up short and left owing the world, even after colonial powers came in and took whatever they wanted. Meanwhile, Africa is mostly closely identified with poverty, and those countries that are able, devote 10 times more in their budgets ....

Pan-Asian blast at the World Film Festival of Bangkok

The World Film Festival of Bangkok has never been a huge showcase for Thai films. I guess the organizers, who are trying to appeal to film lovers who live in Thailand, figure that local festivalgoers are more interested in seeing films from other countries. After all, we're in Thailand, and the theory is, I guess, we can see Thai films whenever we want.So there are just a few short films and some ind....
