The saddest sight I've seen in a long time was last weekend when I passed through The Emporium shopping center and saw CD Warehouse. I had heard the chain was closing in Thailand, but I wasn't prepared for what I saw - a store that is virtually empty shelves. Any stock of value has either been shipped out or scavenged clean in the chain's close-out sale at its one remaining location. There was no musi....

At times brain-melting, but mostly annoying, the conceit of Julie Taymor's Beatles' musical Across the Universe wears off after about an hour, or maybe less. The best bits are when there's some action going on during the songs. Early on, one of the most stunning was the mournful lament of I Want to Hold You Hand by a lesbian cheerleader, singing as football players smashed into each other. With a Litt....

In addition to the multi-colored pageant that is Elizabeth: The Golden Age, there is the mind-blowing spectacle that is Across the Universe, which is in limited release in Bangkok. Directed by Julie Taymor, who did the splashy biographical film Frida and directed The Lion King on Broadway, this is a musical, using the songs of the Beatles.Set during the 1960s, this romantic drama has characters with ....

I used to watch the Porter Wagoner Show on television when I was growing up. I think his rendition of "Green, Green Grass of Home" is the best. One of my favorite songs by Porter Wagoner and his frequent duet partner Dolly Parton is "40 Miles from Poplar Bluff", which is about the idyllic life back in the Ozark Mountains of Missouri. The song had particular resonance for me becaus....

Bobby Byrd was the guy heard on James Brown recordings like "Licking Stick", "Sex Machine" and "Get Up, Get Into It, Get Involved", encouraging Brown's squeals with gruff shouts of "Yeah!"A longtime sideman of Brown, Byrd actually gave Brown his big break, getting his family to sponsor Brown's release from prison. Brown then joined Byrd's band and ended up taki....
