After a hiatus with this feature, I'm going to try and restart, though I'm not sure if I'll be able to keep this up. It's taken me awhile to adjust from working on a weekly section (RIP Weekend) to the Daily Xpress, so we'll just see how this goes.Opening on Wednesday, a day earlier than usual, the big release this week is Iron Man, starring a wisecracking Robert Downey Jr. as a billionaire weapons i....

If you've seen the original Thai Shutter, then take of snapshot of it in your brain and cherish the memory. Better yet, get the DVD of the original Thai film and watch it again. A repeat view of the 2004 film will be far more rewarding than watching the laughably dull, half-reheated Hollywood version, which doesn't achieve anything near the suspense and scares of Banjong Pisanthanakul's and Parkpoom ....

For no reason that I can see, other than sheer coincidence, this week's opening films are dominated by horror and suspense, from both Hollywood and Thailand. The one exception is Once, an Irish romantic musical, which won the best song award at this year's Oscars.Directed by John Carney, a member of the Irish folk-rock group The Frames, Once stars Frames frontman Glen Hansard as a Dublin busker who fa....

Two Thai films are opening this week: The historical drama First Flight and the supernatural historical fantasy, Siyama: Village of Warriors. Both are effects-heavy films that have been in production for a long time. From RS Film's Avant production house, First Flight has been in the works for five years. Starring Sornram Teppitak, this is a tale of daring young Thai men and their flying machines. It ....

Being disconnected from American TV culture, I've never watched Alias, and I think I might have seen one episode of some show called Lost.Still, I am aware that there is a person known as J.J. Abrams. He directed Mission: Impossible III, which I thought was okay. He's also directing a new Star Trek film, which I think should be pretty cool. So, I really have no context to compare Cloverfield to, excep....

The most important release this week is Eastern Promises, the latest film from artful Canadian shockmeister David Cronenberg. It was a nominee for Best Motion Picture and Best Performance by an Actor in a Lead Role at the recent Golden Globes, and is the first of the true prestige pictures to hit Bangkok as the awards season ramps up.In the film, Viggo Mortensen portrays a creepy, tattooed, bad-ass R....

The independent Thai psychological drama, 8th Day, opens on February 28 . I had earlier reported that it was going to be released on January 31 at House only, but the release has been delayed until a time when more cinemas will be free, enabling producers to give it a wider release. This is a black-and-white thriller, directed by Chodchai Yoadsaranee and written by Warisara Puthpavana. The anima....
