An additional movie slipped past me and didn't get noted in my earlier roundup of new releases this week. It's The Counterfeiters (Die Fälscher) the first Austrian film to win the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. The story is set in World War II era Germany and involves a scheme by the Nazis to bankrupt England by flooding the country with fake banknotes. A master forger, interred at a concentration camp, is tapped for the job. Critical acclaim for this film is almost universal, with a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 96% fresh -- almost genuine. The Counterfeiters is playing at the Scala in Siam Square. |
