Syndromes and a Century: Thailand's Edition opens on April 10

With scratched black film-reel leader and silence to replace the parts the censors cut out, Apichatpong Weerasethakul's Syndromes and a Century will be released on April 10 for a limited run at Siam Paragon.

This will likely be the only way to see the special Thailand's Edition. The cultural authorities should be proud to have something so exclusive, and they had a hand in it, so congratulations are in order. Ticket holders will get a souvenir postcard – a collector’s item. Also, part of the box-office proceeds will go to the Free Thai Cinema Movement supported by the Thai Film Foundation.

Siam Paragon is one of Bangkok's glitziest, most heavily trafficked shopping malls. The opening day on April 10 comes as the long Thai New Year weekend is getting under way. Though Bangkok tends to empty out with folks going back to provinces for Thailand's biggest holiday, this is still a big weekend, and is very high profile.

There's a message here that I think Apichatpong is trying to send. One that he's too polite to say explicitly, and one that I don't feel is necessary to print, even though I am thinking it right now as I type this.

Perhaps during the seven-minute blanked-out scene, the audience can contemplate that message.

  • The six censored scenes are:
  • A monk playing guitar.
  • Two monks playing with a remote-control flying saucer.
  • A group of doctors drinking whiskey in a hospital basement conference room.
  • A doctor kissing his girlfriend in his office, and has to "adjust" his trousers.
  • A statue of the Prince of Songkhla, "the father of Thai medicine".
  • A statue of the Princess Mother.

So far I saw the ad says 8pm on April 10. That is the special show you'll meet the director and chat.

But I still don't know about the rest of the shows and how long

Yes, Pasa, this film has been around awhile. It actually premiered in 2006, and then toured the world. The director attempted to screen it commercially in Thailand last year, but withdrew it when they wanted to censor it.

Lalida, the uncensored version is already available on DVD from the US.

I haven't found out when the showtimes are. Hopefully they will be fixed soon.

I heard there would be only two shows a day. If you can find out about the showtimes and how long the film shows, it would be great. Thanks.

long ago, I saw this film review in film magazine...but it said it was not on the theater. Cencorship with unreasonable thought, I hate it.
