Tickets for the Hong Kong International Film Festival are on sale, and the first screenings of Ploy, The Love of Siam and Opapatika, are among those already marked "full house".There are still seats for both screenings of the loopy romantic drama Handle Me With Care, but I think Hong Kongers might flock to see this sweet tale of a three armed man from Lampang and a large-breasted woman -- e....

For no reason that I can see, other than sheer coincidence, this week's opening films are dominated by horror and suspense, from both Hollywood and Thailand. The one exception is Once, an Irish romantic musical, which won the best song award at this year's Oscars.Directed by John Carney, a member of the Irish folk-rock group The Frames, Once stars Frames frontman Glen Hansard as a Dublin busker who fa....

Some heavy films dominated the 80th Academy Awards, making for one of the strongest years in Oscar history, and one that left me with the most satisfied feeling I've had in years after hearing the Oscar results. The Coen Brothers, who have directed some of my favorite films, were given the honor of Best Director, and their film, No Country for Old Men, was named Best Picture. They also won the award f....

The saddest sight I've seen in a long time was last weekend when I passed through The Emporium shopping center and saw CD Warehouse. I had heard the chain was closing in Thailand, but I wasn't prepared for what I saw - a store that is virtually empty shelves. Any stock of value has either been shipped out or scavenged clean in the chain's close-out sale at its one remaining location. There was no musi....

Quite possibly the best film yet by the acclaimed brother filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen, No Country for Old Men is a profound, violent reverie on the old American west, set in 1980 west Texas.Tommy Lee Jones stars as a weary, retiring sheriff, faced with the bloodiest case of his career. He's not so much as solving the case, but helplessly following the blood trail of a killer (Javiar Bardem) so rel....

The Coen Brothers are back. After a couple of missteps with the uneven, oftentimes flat remake of The Ladykillers, and the under-appreciated romantic satire Intolerable Cruelty, Joel and Ethan Coen offer up a bleak, unforgiving contemporary American western with No Country for Old Men, which is based on a Cormac McCarthy novel. This is the Coen Brothers at their best, and their most bone-dry film yet.....

It was only a small item on the bottom line of a graphic at the bottom of Page 2 of the Sunday Nation, but it caught my attention. Among the three "don'ts" issued for the new government by the Non-governmental Organization Coordinating Committee on Development: Don't approve the new film censorship law.The call to reverse the film censorship measure is lumped into the NGOs' "don'ts&quo....
