Subtlety. While I'm not sure this is a noun that would usually be used in conjunction with the name of David Cronenberg, it feels right after having seen his Russian mafia tale, Eastern Promises. After watching the in-your-face violence of Hitman or the far-too-literal allusions of Across the Universe, Eastern Promises seems quite gentle by comparison.Sure, there is violence and gore in Eastern Promis....

As evidenced by the five-hour lineup for tickets to the screenings of The Love of Siam Director's Cut, this arthouse revival of Chukiat Sakweerakul's romantic drama has proven popular. Indeed, the show has been sold out since tickets went on sale on Monday. The show opened Thursday night, and it was supposed to run until January 23, with the plan to add more screenings if there was the demand. Well, t....

Supakorn Kitsuwan, a talented stage and screen actor, is in at least three of my favorite films: Wisit Sasanatieng's Tears of the Black Tiger, Pen-ek Ratanruang's Monrak Transistor and the insane zombie comedy, SARS Wars.Just a couple of weeks ago, I flipped on the television to watch a DVD, but before I could hit the auxiliary button, I caught this versatile talent appearing on a variety show, and h....

Nominations for the second annual Asian Film Awards have been announced, and topping the list of nominees from Thailand are two young actors: Mario Maurer, who has received a best supporting actor nod for The Love of Siam, and Apinya Sakujaroensuk, who played the Afro-haired title character in Ploy, as best supporting actress.Hmm, now I know there are Love of Siam fans out there who are saying, "....

MC Chatrichalerm Yukol's historical battle epic, King Naresuan II, under the title of King of Fire, didn't make the short-list of Oscar hopefuls, which has been whittled down to nine entries from the 63 submissions for Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.Notably on the list is Mongol, the Kazakhstani biopic about Genghis Khan that stars Tadanobu Asano. This is the Genghis Kahn biopic I think....

The most important release this week is Eastern Promises, the latest film from artful Canadian shockmeister David Cronenberg. It was a nominee for Best Motion Picture and Best Performance by an Actor in a Lead Role at the recent Golden Globes, and is the first of the true prestige pictures to hit Bangkok as the awards season ramps up.In the film, Viggo Mortensen portrays a creepy, tattooed, bad-ass R....

At times brain-melting, but mostly annoying, the conceit of Julie Taymor's Beatles' musical Across the Universe wears off after about an hour, or maybe less. The best bits are when there's some action going on during the songs. Early on, one of the most stunning was the mournful lament of I Want to Hold You Hand by a lesbian cheerleader, singing as football players smashed into each other. With a Litt....

The family of a recently deceased patriarch of a Japanese pharmaceuticals empire gathers for a will reading - a will that gives everything to a young woman who's living in the old man's home, which infuriates the man's own daughters. The condition of the will is that the older women's sons must vie for the hand of the much young Tamayo. But even before the will is read, people are turning up dead, inc....
