The big Thai release this week is Fighting Beat from Mono Film. Following close on the heels of Five Star Production's Muay Thai Chaiya, Fighting Beat also deals with the southern art of Muay Thai, Muay Chaiya. The story is about a young boxer named Kem who makes his living fighting in rigged bouts for tourists on Koh Phi Phi, in which he literally takes dives for his foreign opponents' feet to earn tips. Though the trailer on the film's website plays up the comedy aspects, I suspect the film will be heavy on melodrama as Kem seeks redemption or meaning in his life via adopting the pure style of Muay Chaiya. Also in cinemas is a Korean romance, Once in a Summer, about a college guy (Byung-hun Lee) who meets a local girl (Ae Su) in a small town in 1960s Korea. It's playing in several cinemas but has the original soundtrack with English and Thai subtitles at the Siam. |
