Bobby Byrd was the guy heard on James Brown recordings like "Licking Stick", "Sex Machine" and "Get Up, Get Into It, Get Involved", encouraging Brown's squeals with gruff shouts of "Yeah!" A longtime sideman of Brown, Byrd actually gave Brown his big break, getting his family to sponsor Brown's release from prison. Brown then joined Byrd's band and ended up taking over as frontman. But Byrd was happy to take the sideman role, and hold Brown's cape as Brown left the stage and came back on for just one more song. Until Brown couldn't come back anymore. Byrd had a number of his own funky hits, including "I Know You Got Soul" and "Hot Pants (I'm Coming)". Byrd died on September 12 in Loganville, Georgia, USA, at age 73.
