The Nation's World Film Festival of Bangkok website is starting to be updated, and the festival is offering what looks to be a strong line-up, with the highlight being a program from the European Union, which has traditionally put on its own film series each year in Bangkok. The opening film will be the Southeast Asian premiere of Genghis Khan: To the Ends of the Earth and Sea, an epic Japanese-Mongol....

It's damn hard to come by recent releases of Thai films on English-subtitled DVDs. Those Thai films that do get overseas releases with English subs tend to be in the horror and action-film genres, which means there are dozens of films - well-crafted dramas and sharp satires in particular - that get overlooked, much to the chagrin of the filmmakers who made them. The move to save money by the film com....

Bangkok cinema scene: September 27 to October 3

A puzzlingly light week for openings in Bangkok cinemas, with the only Hollywood release this week being Resident Evil: Extinction, which I've actually seen and didn't think was as bad as the 25% rating on Rotten Tomatoes suggests.A little bit of Road Warrior and Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds, and a whole lot of Milla Jovovich makes for a passable action-horror film. The third in a series of films bas....

Bangkok cinema scene: September 20 to 26

In Shoot 'Em Up, Clive Owen plays a super cool gunman who teams up with a hooker with a heart of gold (Monica Belucci) to save an infant from the clutches of an assassin (Paul Giamatti). Critical consensus is that Shoot 'Em Up is another exercise in mind-numbing violence, but it looks pretty, with cinematography by Peter Pau, who worked with Ang Lee on Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, as well as John ....

The website for the 5th World Film Festival of Bangkok, organized by Nation Multimedia, has been updated -- sort of. It has a placeholder welcome page, with a notice that "this year site is coming soon".The festival this year moves from the environs around Siam Square and Ratchaprasong to the slightly off-the-beaten path Esplanade on Ratchadaphisek Road. Located near the Bangkok subway's Th....

A few things to mention:13 Beloved, the best Thai film of 2006, has received an English-subtitled DVD release in Singapore. If you haven't caught on, DVDs of Thai films released in Thailand routinely have no English subtitles. This is done so the film companies don't have to pay royalties to to the subtitle writers, and it saves a bit on production costs of the DVDs, and as a bonus, adds exclusivity ....

In memoriam: Bobby Byrd

Bobby Byrd was the guy heard on James Brown recordings like "Licking Stick", "Sex Machine" and "Get Up, Get Into It, Get Involved", encouraging Brown's squeals with gruff shouts of "Yeah!"A longtime sideman of Brown, Byrd actually gave Brown his big break, getting his family to sponsor Brown's release from prison. Brown then joined Byrd's band and ended up taki....
