Is the bad omen hovering Singapore?

March 3, 2009

Over the weekend, lightning struck the Merlion statue, Singapore's ultimate icon. The statue is situated at the mouth of the Singapore River.

Is this a sign of bad omen for Singapore, which is going through a difficult economic time ahead?

Bad omen?

One witness told MediaCorp Radio’s 938LIVE that orange sparks flew when lightning struck between 4 and 5pm on Sunday at Merlion Park. The explosion caused damage to parts of the statue, with broken pieces falling to the ground.
Merlion Park is one of the favourite tourist spots. The Merlion represents a mythical creature, half lion and half fish.

Singapore is a modern state, a financial and commodity trading centre. Most of its people might not have superstitious belief, but some of them could not help wonder why lightning struck the Merlion statue during this time.

I reported about Temasek's losses last month. Here is goes:

Temasek takes severe hit
By Thanong Khanthong
The Nation

CEO Ho Ching's exit won't alter fortunes of the sovereign wealth fund in short term

Ho Ching's resignation as CEO will not help Temasek Holdings dispel heavy losses of about 40 per cent of Singapore's sovereign wealth fund amid the global financial market meltdown.

Ho Ching

The Government Investment Corporation of Singapore (GIC) is also suffering similar heavy losses.

An investment analyst in Singapore said Temasek's results will be released in April. He estimated that of its US$125-billion (Bt4.3 trillion) portfolio as of March 2008, Temasek would have lost 40 per cent, leaving it with about US$75 billion.

As for the GIC, the investment analyst said it would also lose more than a third of the value of its investment portfolio.

"GIC started the crisis with roughly Singapore $550 billion in reserves. My estimate is that it has lost about $190 billion to $200 billion of that, leaving it with about $350 billion. This amount is equivalent to 200 per cent of Singapore's gross domestic product," he added.

"So both have lost money but their performance has not been out of line with other large funds, possibly a bit better. These are all worst-case estimates."

Ho, the wife of Prime Minister Lee Hsieng Loong, announced last week that after almost seven years at the helm of Temasek, she would step down by October this year to be succeeded by Chip Goodyear, a former CEO of BHP Billiton Ltd. He will be the first foreigner to run the sovereign wealth fund.

Temasek Holdings was set up with proceeds from the privatisation of Singapore's state-owned firms, while GIC invested the international reserves of the Monetary Authority of Singapore. Both represent the investment vehicles of the Singapore state, which has eyed a global reach with its investment.

The transition is taking place at a time when Singapore is suffering its worst economic problems since the 1960s. Temasek, which racked a return of about 17 per cent a year since its inception in 1974, is also going to face a drastic restructuring of its investment strategy.

Under her leadership, Temasek embarked on audacious acquisitions in China, Asia, Europe and the United States.

Temasek's buy-out of Shin Corp, previously owned by former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, in January 2006, sparked political turmoil in Thailand followed by a military coup in September that year.

Ho's resignation has also sparked a debate inside Singapore.

Tharman Shangmugaratnam, the finance minister, preferred to handle the issue diplomatically, saying Ho's departure was not linked to the performance of Temasek's investments.

"Whether this is a way of making a change of someone who is related to the prime minister, this has been a point that I've dealt with since the first day Ho Ching was appointed as CEO. I was very instrumental in bringing in Ho Ching and it was based purely on merit and has nothing to do with her relationship to anyone," he said.

The investment analyst in Singapore said Ho's resignation was planned for about a year.

"I don't think it has much to do with Temasek's performance. This is Singapore, favoured people are not made to resign for performance. I think Singapore leaders are more concerned about the sovereign wealth fund issue. It becomes more difficult to defend Singapore's sovereign wealth fund as a non-state actor with no political agenda if the wife of the prime minister is running it," he said.

Singapore's economy is facing a severe downturn, with growth rate plunging into negative territory. "We recently revised downward our GDP forecast to minus 2.8 per cent to reflect the likelihood that the contraction in the first half of 2009 could be deeper than previously expected," said Citi's Asia Economic Outlook and strategy on January 23.

"Advance estimates for the fourth quarter of 2008 showed a contraction of 2.6 per cent from a year ago, down sharply from 0.3 per cent the previous quarter. On a quarter on quarter seasonally adjusted annualised rate, the fourth quarter GDP contracted 16.9 per cent - the worst on record," the report said.

Singapore recently entered into a currency-swap arrangement with the US Federal Reserve, which has worked out the swap arrangements with selected countries, including Brazil and Korea, to avert the financial crisis.

Unlike Korea, which has drawn down the currency swap arrangement, Singapore has not yet drawn down the swap.

The citizens in Singapore have a lot of faith in their government's leaderships and strongly believe their leaders can bring them through this crisis as they have experienced before. The government needs the support and collaboration of the people to work together to overcome the crisis. There is no one man show but a strong coorelation of everyone's ability.

Thailand has more natural resources and opportunity than Singapore but lack unity among the people and the government. I believe Singapore can overcome the crisis much faster than Thailand not because Singaporeans are smarter than the Thais, but the people and the government of Singapore are "All in One and One in All."

Yes, Khun Tawan. Singapore has built its economy on Globalisation, with full exposure to the global financial markets. What would happen if the world's economy is to sink to the bottom this year or next and then stay in an L shape for three to five years? This is the worst case scenario. How will Singapore -- and Thailand in particular -- survive?

Singapore will be an excellent example to watch for solutions because its economy was totally built on Globalization and unlike the US or China that can do something about their domestic consumption to counter problems Singapore can not.

Whatever solutions Singapore comes up with I do not think they will get into a idealogy debate of whether or not to plug the hole in a sinking ship thay only have one ship.

I don't have much knowledge on the economics, but I can understand that your opinon is reflecting the idea of a shcool of economists that the market will adjust itself and any interventions will warp the market systems. Anyway you opinion will not be proved right or not, because the Goverment already started injecting money into the auto industry.

I simply think that if any private company can take the failed auto comanies over, the government would not give direct financial suports for them, and if the auto sector had been considered a sun-set industry before this financial crisis broke out, it would not have bent backward to save them.

Political intervention took place simply because the "labour force" in economic theory are actually human beings who have to sruvive and raise their family in the adjusting period. Intervention is sometimes necessary even if it would distort the "market principle"

RE: Comment 24.
How on earth I got involved with Thailand, I will never know?
I have so little in common with the place.
I hope that ‘Yoon’ and 'Thanong’ can discretely join The Orange Café?
I need them to disagree with !
It would be nice that they could give their own views and not that of employees of The Nation?
However much I have a go at them, I seriously take note of what they have to say.
OrangeCafe is the place where original and free thought takes place, without the
resort to insults. The coolest Thai place on the Web.
I hate that word ‘Cool’. But that is the word that conveys OK, these days.
Looking forward to new members on Orangecafe – the civilised web forum.

Hi Jaratpan. You are right to say that there is no Singapore crusine for a simple fact that Singapore is a land of immigrants. There is no ethnic Singaporean and therefore no ethnic crusine. The origin occupants of Singapore are from neighbouring countries like Indonesia and Malaya, then after the Chinese and the European. Modern Singapore is only about 40 years !!! Thailand, Vietnam etc that you mentioned are civilisations that have developed over a long period of time which enable them to evolve and have their own ethnic identities.

Ian, Singapore economic history started as a re-distribution center for the hinterland of Malaya and also the surrounding regions. The government recognises this strategic importance and have further enhanced its infrastructure. It is still a very important component of the GDP pie. It is not suprising that most goods for SEA will stop and redistributed via Singapore.

Downgrade for CapitalLand

S&P’s Rating Services yesterday revised its outlook on the BBB+ long-term unsolicited corporate credit rating on property giant CapitaLand (CAPL SP, SELL, TP S$1.80, CP S$1.85) to negative from stable. In its release, S&P said under the current volatile environment, a comprehensive understanding of the company's strategic and commercial response to the slowdown in the residential and commercial property business in its core markets is an important credit consideration. It added that its negative outlook reflects its opinion that CapitaLand's profitability will continue to face pressure as a result of lower revenues from residential development projects in its core markets, as well as the negative outlook in general for commercial properties in the region.

Omen or not. Nothing last...

Singapore has been so successful in the past from:
- foreign investment/takeover, connection/networking and selling its management/consulting services abroad.
- stealing/copying other people's asset/idea. I have seen so many restaurants selling Thai, Indian, Chinese, Vietnamese food but actually owned by Singaporeans. Never saw any restaurant saying Singaporean food outside Singapore. Similar to other products, brands that sell as Singapore's do not sell well.

So what? Borrowing won't last forever. Time changes (new competitors come in, local firms learn to stand on their own).

I am so surprised and bored to see Thai Airways still claim to sell 'hospitality' - the same selling point for 20+ yrs. No offense, almost all other airlines nowadays offer similar level of service, but with more efficiency, plus their fleet are newer. With this price, I would expect personal entertainment system in every economy seat.

Hsieng Loong (current PM) is about 58 and has kids that are still in university or just graduated. Unlike Hsieng Loong who was guided and groomed by LKY into politics (just like Chuan did for Ahbisit), there do not seem to have any grooming of the next Lee's legacy. I stand corrected.

Plaadip, the Lee family has provided an excellent leadership to Singapore from its infancy. All the success and wealth are from Singapore founding fathers which will include LKY, Goh Keng Swee, Rajaratnam and Toh Chin Chai. His son, the present PM, is a intelligent and suitable leader to bring Singapore out of this economic crsis and to the next level. The end of the Lee Dynasty will not be due to the failure of the Lee's ability to govern Singapore but because is no one in line from the family tree groomed to stand for election.

Whether the Merlion incident is purely an coincidence or a bad sign, Singapore certainly is facing a difficult time. The decline of its sovereign wealth fund is relative to other countries SWF decline and is not the worse problem.

What is difficult is the nation economic structure. The country rapid growth is largely due to the West unsatiable demand for consumer goods, mainly electronic and pharmaceutical products. Now that the tap being switch off, it will be hard for Singapore to reform its structure quickly. 90% of GDP is dependent on export. With a small population and therefore a limit to domestic growth, it will have to depend on public spending and some form of social security safety net to tide over till the West will start to consume again. That wouldn't happen soon.

Unlike Thailand which has a large agriculture industry and population, Singapore do not have the luxury to re-tune its economy. They have tried to produced home grown brands but it is still a continuing process.

We can expect Singapore to have a difficult time for a long while. They are the 3rd country after Taiwan and Japan to go into recession in Asia.

The government helps train white collor jobless to have manual skills, like a electric wiring while guranteeing 90 percent of their salary(maybe of minimum wedge). 19,000 people has been in the scheme already. (a program similar to that of Thailand, but Singapore started it earlier.) And they encouraged the companies to fire immigrant worker first, and this government policy created half a million jobless foreign workers like those from Bangladeshi. They have no choice but to be selfish under this economic condition.
