Conservationists had expressed their concern over the high mortality rate of gharials, an endangered freshwater crocodile species.

About a month, starting form Dec 8th, the reported dead of gharials in the north of India is 67 out of the remaining 1300.

“The species is already extinct in its former range of Pakistan, Bhutan, and Myanmar, and most likely in Banglades,” reported in WWF India’s press release.

Most of the dead gharials were younger than 6 year-old and not older than 11 year-old.

Conservationists are extremely concern with this reported motility.

Ian -- According to the press release from WWF-India, there is no sign of external injuries, but a preliminary postmortem report showed lungs discoloration, digestive material in intestine, liver swollen, and ulcers in the stomach with nodules—the tissues from liver and kidneys have shown extensive degeneration changes with a firm presence of various stages of protozoan parasite.

I guess none of the commentators to date really know what a gharial is, such a pity.

Why are you even worried about crocodiles dying whem there are so many people in this world who are starving and/or under-nourished. I think people should set their priorities straight and work on the really important matters that affect the lives and welfare of their fellow human beings first. Animals like crocodiles can come later, if at all. Anyone who loves crocodiles and alligators can come and catch them in Thailand, Indonesia, Florida, etc. Its no big deal! And who cares how these animals died anyway? Maybe they were killed for their meat, just like in Thailand? Crocodile meats are "dirty" according to the Bible and I will not touch them with a 10-meter pole.

Does the report say how they died, natural causes or poaching?
