The first GIS training was conducted in Kratie province with two main cooperation trainers from WWF US and WWF Cambodia. With WWF staffs’ participation from the four countries along Mekong basin, the training was aimed to provide a better GIS management for managers in their conservation work as well as some skills and concept for beginners to be aware and learn up on, said Jessica Forrest, a GIS Network Coordination from WWF US. GIS is a short term of Geographic Information System, which is used for translating, analyzing and displaying data regarding the specific location into map. This computer system can display a landscape of researched conservative area, analyze animal migration, indicate land changed, and cover on other geographic information. WWF US’s trainer, Jessica, said, Cambodia is a big region with GIS coordination and training need, also the training is regional that’s the reason it is done in Cambodia with participants from the neighboring countries. WWF US is trying to address the system to WWF staffs because understanding what GIS can be used for is very important for conservation issue, she added. The two-day training was a joint training among 20 staffs from Cambodia, Thailand, Laos and Vietnam with four trainers from WWF US, WWF Cambodia, WWF Laos, and WWF Vietnam. Continue...

Nice to hear from you too Phi Lak! I also hope there will be satellite about wild lives, people will be widely known about wild animal and natural resource situation in their countries. GIS is just a computer system but it is quite a good system for conservationists to have an idea about the place they want to conserve. You can have a look at these websites if you have time.
