How many Thais are reading ?

I am in doubt that my wish to correct the imperfect will not be perfectly implemented.

How many Thai people are reading this English Daily or the blogs that posted here.

If the head of the state and the staff cannot read English. How this suggestion or whatever it is can swim to the agenda.

Perhaps, i should say goodbye to this blog and sipping coffee, nope, tea from Chiang Rai would be more peaceful.

gatito, yes these blogs do have a habit of wandering off topic, perhaps annoying to the original writer but quite good fun. I am actually trying to keep these blogs alive, my impression is that they are slowly dying, just run down the list and see how few have more than 3 or 4 comments. My own articles were obviously too scientific so I just limit myself to comments now, usually cynical ones:-) I miss the old community, even Piset:-)

Well, if The Nation really pays for every comment, Uncle Ian would amass fortune from this blogsphere, given that he seems to be in every blog here and has engaged in almost all topics. Let call him "the Ubiquitous Ian of the Blogsphere" (Just kidding uncle Ian, hope you don't mind).
A great number of cybersurfers may visit this blog but they may abstain from exchanging views by many reasons, perhaps they are not well-versed in English, or having no idea at all to share. Some may post their views in but later gave up forever after they found that the arguement was led down to the drainage. [Hey, GGrass, are you Korean? I am learning SK language. Maybe next time I can try greeting you in SK language. This time, let say, An-yong-hee-kay-say-yo]

GG - As Ian said in comment 1, this is just a place to let off steam and no-one really reads these blogs unless they are Thaksincentric or designed in pictures or cartoons. Makes no difference to me if people read something or not, it was cathartic and I realise that articles about 'elsewhere' have very little interest to Thais, who don't know where elsewhere is or care. So, I guess it's back to the cynical, sarcastic one liners in rhyming slang which is actually more fun. Too bad no-one responded to your great night view of NK - I expect most people thought it was a view of the stars.

GG - What % of the Thai population did you go to school with? All good comments and I bow to your first hand experience. I guess all these whiz kids are busy in their high powered jobs, working for a living, so they probably don't have time for blogging anyway. As for the other XXX million, I think your last paragraph sums it up very well, i.e. "the concept of discussion, arguement, debate, making jokes, expressing ideas and thoughts, greeting strangers, allowing others to criticize you and your ideas, and in turn criticizing others, demanding that the society be changed in certain ways, condeming crooked people......" cannot be done for free/pleasure - but is possible if money is involved.

the fact is, Thais don't care about this blog. and i don't think it's because of english.

i lived here many years too, and have lots of thai friends whom i went to school with. they are VERY good in english, as good as i am, if not better.

i come from one of the oldest international school in bangkok, (RIS) where there were plenty of thai students who came from abroad.

and i graduated from university where they taught entirely in english. (SIIT, TU) all the students there in my faculty, and the BBA faculty have adequate english skill to read, understand, and contribute to this blog.

not to mention other universities with english programs, such as MUIC, ABAC, etc etc... i would say the number of students currently studying in those institutions must be near 10,000 people. and those who graduated from those institution must be many times more than that.

but it's hard to believe that NONE of them are interested in this blog from one of the few english newspaper in Thailand.

i think this blog is too difficult for them, not in terms of 'english', but in terms of concept.

the concept of discussion, arguement, debate, making jokes, expressing ideas and thoughts, greeting strangers, allowing others to criticize you and your ideas, and in turn criticizing others, demanding that the society be changed in certain ways, condeming crooked people......

all those above mentioned concept is foreign to thais, coz they can't see how doing those will benefit them in anyways. but if NATION paid a bath for every comment or post you put up, i'll bet we'll see much more participation.

Dam - Having lived in Thailland for many tears, my conclusion is that Thai's (for whatever reason) struggle with the English language more than most Asian countries, so as Ian said not many people, especially Thai's will read or respond to these blogs. Thai's as you know, hate to 'lose face' and there's no bigger face loser to a Thai than to write something in English for publication that they know simply doesn't make sense. That coupled with the fact that they don't understand what they read in English anyway means there is little contribution from Thai's. I really don't think it's because Thai's are not as smart as other Asians, but they certainly rank high on the laziness scale, whereas many other countries in this region will see its citizens trying hard to improve themselves. I cringe when I see Thai adults on the bus or train reading those little pocket cartoon books and with this level of intelllect it is little wonder the government feels the need to play nursemaid and decide what Thai's can watch on TV.
