[Nyan Win posts with UN Sec Gen Ban Ki-moon at UN HQ] Burma’s Foreign Minister Nyan Win likely knows how a life of foreign minister for the junta ruled country is difficult as he has to attend a big international event while colleagues at home killing their own citizens. A former military officer Nyan Win was dispatched to travel around the globe from the Far East Beijing, up north Moscow to the Westernmost end New York to explain “unnecessary” and “unacceptable” situation to the international community. He was scheduled to speak at the general assembly on Oct.1. Unlike his predecessor Win Aung, Nyan Win has never spoken to foreign media. He managed to escape from an army of journalists after the Asean meeting which the Chair of the group Singapore foreign minister George Yeo issued a statement demanding the junta to back off the crackdown. This week, he met UN chief Ban Ki-moon, attended Asean meeting on the sideline of the UN meeting. It seemed he tried to attend as many as functions during the UN annual meeting but failed to show up in a meeting between US State Secretary Condoleezza Rice and her counterparts from Asean. Poor Nyan Win conveyed message to his Asean colleagues that he needed to skip the meeting because he got sick. However, unconfirmed reports indicated that Rice did not want to see him. His position as the foreign minister was insecure as he failed to defend his court. While he was in New York, the US extended sanction, the Asean, which Burma also a member, issued a strong message demanding even a release of Aung San Suu Kyi. Furthermore, pressure was put on him to issue entry visa for the UN special envoy Ibrahim Gambari who jockeying around the country since the last time in May 2006. His big boss Than Shwe would never be happy with the result of his abroad trip. Nyan Win’s fate today recalled us the situation of former Burmese foreign minister Win Aung who was fired not shortly after an Asean meeting in Phnom Penh in 2003 which issued demanded of Aung San Suu Kyi release. Corruption was an excuse the junta boss used to fire Win Aung. Let see what would happen with Nya Win when he returned hom.
