Stupidest poll ever
Posted by stalingrad , Reader : 636 , 08:45:12

A few days ago a poll was conducted by ABAC, asking “people” who they most preferred as the new Police chief. The sample—most of them or actually the highest number—chose Gen. Jongrak, followed by the current contenders. This was a surprise to many and was reported extensively upon by the media, without comment as they were puzzled themselves about the result.

It’s a disgrace for ABAC to have such a polling team in its payroll. This poll has driven ABAC a notch down in its general academic ranking, and undermines its credibility as a top regional university which it is striving for.

1. Why should ABAC ask this kind of question to the people, presumably the man in the street. What use is the answer? It certainly can’t be acted on by the government. No government can rule by taking into account such polls, especially badly conceived ones.

2. And who was the sample and what logic was used to choose this kind of sample to ask this kind of question? The answer would be of some value if the sample consisted of those knowledgeable in police affairs, its politics and history. Then, any consensus or any divisions reported would be of a representation of opinion of “wise people” or the “players”, which would be useful to decision-makers.

3. Then, in this kind of important issue, you’ve got to ask why the respondent chose the answer he/she did. Not hard at all to tag another question, closed or open.  Why didn’t they ask? The answer we got now is useless without knowing the reason. Incomplete, as if eating half a hamburger.

The reason why another such question was not asked was probably financial, and too much time involved in processing, and time is money.

4. The poll asked a sample of people who I wouldn’t go so far as to say not qualified, but who probably have only a superficial knowledge of this important issue. So what does the public gain from knowing the answer? Nothing—because the methodology was badly conceived. Truly a waste of paper and media space.

Polling in Thailand seems to be big business. I also think it is influenced by politics—not all polls. So you’ve got to be critical when reading polling results, looking at the methodology, etc.

Stal, I'm afraid to fly nowadays. Yes, I know statistics show that it's safer to fly than drive or something. But when I think about an airplane assembly where many parts are welded (I could be wrong) it sends chill down my spine. I used to take domestic flights but now I rather take the tour buses as they are safer now with more stringent control.

My childhood friend is visiting me early next month. He proposes to fly to Phuket and spend a couple of days. I don't like tourist places. For my many years in Thailand, I have never visited Phuket and never have an urge to.

Perhaps I will travel with my friend to the golden triangle and shoot a film like the clip Hermano so eagerly showed of this mafia, jj, conning the British marine in Pattaya. Why are some farangs so naive and so self-righteous is something I don't like.

Expresso: now that you mentioned it, I also like Cathay, very clean cabin and excellent pilots as seen in the smooth landing in Vancouver, when the passengers clapped their hands. But now their prices are in the stratosphere.

But I will never fly in an incoming storm, you were lucky. Remember the recent Air France flight out of S. America recently that dissappeared in the rain storm, the theory was that it was struck by lightning.

I normally fly Cathay Pacific. I think they have good pilots. I don't care much of the services on the place or the food.

I remember when I flew from here to HK to join my brother's wedding. On the day I was flying out, there was a typhoon ( 6-8 degree). I originally booked JAL business class but they canceled the flight and directed me to Thai Inter which the counter was still open. But Thai Inter also canceled the flight. Cathay was the only one left. I flew there safely. Now that I think back, I was probably quite daring but ignorant but attending my brother's wedding was more important for me at that time.

I actually had a look at skytrax that Catch suggested, which is a gem of a site. Thanks again. Goes to show that out of the zillions words written in these blogs, readers do get something of practical value out of it, apart from the pics and free cooking class posted by the, ahem, shall we say well-dressed Pan.

Actually, looking at it at positively, the invectives, dirt, and things thrown at each other in these blogs, are actually educational. You get to know how to... etc. Could come in useful one day. Plus you get to know "the other side" as well as the gaps.

Ian, for Qatar, the skytrax gives them almost tops in washroom cleanliness 4/5, whereas Etihad got 3/5. They give Qatar 3/5 for transit handling, I would have given them -2, for the pain it caused me at 3 am. I'll look into Sri Lankan too.

All in all, it comes to whether you want to grit your teeth and save some money.

TG needs to have small TV screens on the back of the seats and give the choice of movie to their passengers like other airlines do.

I don't have complaints about the meal. I tend to eat the airplane meal with papering a lot of salt. Actually I drink beers with the salt, and I feel it's delicious. I don't like salty food on the ground. I don't know why I suddenly comes to like salt whenever on the plane. Is this my idiosyncrasy? or some other people also prefer saulty food in airplane?

Emirates are up with the best when it comes to both low cost and efficiency. The same for Gulf, they tend to play leapfrog with each other. Qatar is shit.
Srilankan is cheap and includes a free overnight hotel in Colombo ... good for shopping.
Other alternatives with varying possibilities are AirAsia-X to KL and then onwards to BKK, also direct flights to HK and then onwards to BKK via Macau .... again good for shopping.
One can often fly to Manila and then hop back to BKK, this last might be particularly effective for Americans.
I think I have only used the same route twice, each year I research the current cheapest method.

Funny speaking of Thai Air..I booked my flights threw Thai air Internet service .
they rapidly took my payment over the INTERNET in full.
I had a re scheduling issues I presented them with 15 days prior to this issue in BKK after my arrival..In personal at the ticket counter at the airport . They stated sir you booked on line so we will not be able to help you..Contact Thai Air .com

They were not kidding ,they would not even attempt to help me..so back on line I went paid them $200.00 us dollar fee to change this date in 15 days for us..this fee was for 3 tickets @ $200.00 each..
Since then several flights later ..all were booked with another airline and this also includes several in country flights which excluded Thai Air..smooth as silk..along with hundreds of negative reviews and posting of their greed and lacking of consern..These flights all were all booked as business class...hearing of them nearing bankrupt I just smile and say I hoped they enjoyed robbing me ...as much as I have enjoyed seeing them suffer as better airlines are pushing them out of their own airport...

HJ, CAtch: thanks for tip, will check them out.

Peacefulness: I too like Thai and flown them sometimes. But if I had to pay, they are 10000 Bht. more expensive than say Emirates. They should start the equivalent of Nok Air, otherwise budget people would go to Emirates or Qatar. But I have great admiration for Thai International's union though, for certain reasons, especially Khun Jamsri, the iron lady.

DS: While in Dubai, did you happen to see a square faced man in a red shirt, walking around luxury malls with a forlorn look ?

public opinion is proper ethic's

Thats the sole reason of most polls..public opinion
and as far as flying Thai Air..well forget it they became over priced to the other leading airlines.
Thats just my opinion on the matter.

I am planning my route to Mexico + USA.
I am not sure when. Emirates I used to fly only twice to Dubai. Acceptable. Air Berlin I don't know..
I think Thai is the best airline. And Singapore the second.

Stal, I agree with you here. We should be critical reading polling results. More importantly we should look at how poll questions are phrased.

I agree with Plaadip in his c11 in this case. This poll results have no meaning at all!

There are many men of intelligence but few men of intellects in Thailand so that things always turns out something clumsy.

They even polls which one has more popularity between running Thaksin and incumbent AV.
This is the matter of ethics in their profession of, so called, Pollsters.

Anyhow, Poll is new political culture in Thailand and it has significance to refine the society.
In this term I encourage them to do more in any area. By time they will learn and will do better than today.

I think the quaility of the poll itself is all right. There is no perfect opinion poll in the world anyway.

What I don't know is whether most of the polls are initiated by the ABAC staff by themsolves. I think they are chosing the subjects accoridng to the requests from their cliants. (Maybe.)

I sometimes feel sorry for the pollsters in Thailand , because they are accused by both sides, every time they produce a bad number for a camp.

My advice to ABAC poll. I think ABAC should do daily traching, (or weekly tarcking be all right) of popularity rate of the government or PM as Rusmuseen or Gallup do on Obama. The current polls on the support is too irregular to know the real trend. Besides, they would not be accused that the timing of the poll is "policial" if they do it on regular basis.

I think people chose him just because he was a familiar face on TV, because of his duty. Not many Thais knew other candidates before their names came up for the next police chief.

But I think that ABAC poll is always sponsored. That's the way they are working. So who hierd ABAC team is more important to know what the hidden intention of the poll is, I guess.

How would the average Thai citizen know the qualification of anyone for a job this important.
Since Generals or more common that a 20฿ note in Thail, I doubt that the rank signifies any qualification
