I had my knee operation last Friday

Dear Friends and Family members,

Just want to update you with the situation of my knee. Some of you probably knew that I have been having pain in my right knee since 2003, before my departure to the US. It comes and goes. And I really didn’t know why it is so. I didn’t walk too much and I wasn’t a sporty person.

During a winter break when I went to Las Vegas for a vacation, the pain became so bad that I couldn’t even bend my knee. Upon coming back, I went to see a doctor at a university clinic. He said it’s a common problem and there is nothing he could do. I should use less of my knee, and if the pain persists, eat pain-killers.

It continued so and the pain came more often. When I came back to Thailand, I also visited doctors (in two leading Thai hospitals). Both said the same thing – it can’t be cured. Live with it. “Oh, and you should reduce your weight too.”

But my husband couldn’t accept such explanation. So when we moved to Germany, and the pain occurred again, we’ve made an appointment with a doctor specialized in knee and all these joints, whom has helped treated my mother-in-law years ago.

After months of waiting for the appointment, I met the doctor whom had my knee x-ray(ed). When seeing nothing wrong, he had me doing the MTR scan. Then he found some ‘cysts’ in my knee and thought this could be the cause of pain. With a consultation of another knee specialist doctor, they decided I needed an operation or things would just get worse.

The operation was supposed to be a small one. I could just go to the hospital one day earlier for the overall check-up, have the operation the next day and then go home. Simple as that.

So last Friday I had the operation. At first I thought I would only be given local anaesthesia (meaning, only put my knee to sleep) and then the operation. BUT the doctor actually put me to sleep! When I learned that I was a bit concerned for this wasn't a small operation after all!?  And I also stayed in the hospital for 2 nights instead of one. Alas, everything is okay. I'm walking with the sticks, but soon will be able to do so without it.

The problem, according to the doctor, is my miniscule is torn apart, and then the knee produced greater amount of cyst to make it smooth and the cysts begin to clog in my knee, become bad and press the nerve which makes it hurt when I walk (does it make sense at all?). It's nice to know that everything is okay now though I'm a bit annoyed that Thai and American doctors that I have visited said that my problem cannot be cured.

I will have my stitch cut next Friday, and then have the orthopedic treatment (or whatever it is called) during the next three weeks. And then I should be back on my feet again.

Keep your fingers crossed for me, will ya?

I'm actually outraged by the misdiagnosis of the Thai doctors!!! That's what you get when some med schools here releases immature and poorly trained 'doctors' who really aren't sufficiently qualified enough to even lay their fingers on a patient!

For some reason this is a common complaint for women, perhaps because of the difference in hip articulation. It is commonly cured by keyhole surgery, however in severe cases the kneecap (patela) is removed and either restored or replaced with an arificial plate if too severely damaged.

Get well soon, get well soon.
Take care and you'll be back on your feet again, then you can write more great stories as before.
