For the Motherland Group

Exclusive interview with Surakiart Sathirathai.

On September 11, 2007, former deputy prime minister Surakiart Sathirathai joined other veteran politicians; Snoh Thienthong, Vattana Asvahem, Suwit Khunkitti and Somsak Thepsutin, to announce formation of "For the Motherland" Group (Pua Paendin).
The group has brought together a large group of former MPs of now-dissolved Thai Rak Thai Party. The group is said to be a "third force" in Thai politics and in the next election.
It  is expected to register with the Election Commission after their group revamps its line-up of executives and electing leader on September 20.
Surakiart gave an exclusive interview with The Nation's reporter Sucheera Pinijparakarn on the group's objectives and background.

Whilst I laud the Democrats stand against nuclear power, I cannot find a description of their reasons for adopting this stance. Is it simply that they oppose in principle what other parties endorse?

Sucheera, I understand it's a bit too early still, as the factions are changing up and down.. It would really be good if you set up the site, and also the English version would be useful, not least for observers in other countries who wants to understand a bit more about Thai politics.

Maybe mid-november or so would be a good time?

Btw, the Democrats has at least shown one distinct environment policy already by taking a stand against the nuclear power plans.

Johan, Re:You could set up a special election website where you list all the factions standpoints on a series of issues.
tnak for yr suggestion it is a godd idea. We will wait all faction to register as party. As we knew some faction announced formation and a few day it has broken [including FTM]. It is a reason why they undecided to announce policies. This is Thai politics. It's always changed.

Redandwhitestripes, you say (rightfully, I think): 'I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: until the Thai people give these greedy old swine the backlash they deserve, they will continue to insult the intelligence and goodwill of Thai people by behaving how they do.'

So, dear journalists on The Nation:

As you meet and talk to these politicians, wouldn't it be a good idea to actually ask them to declare their policies (or reveal the lack of them publicly) and then write about it?

You could set up a special election website where you list all the factions standpoints on a series of issues. Do it in both Thai and English and announce it in your newspaper and elsewhere, so that voters could go there to check on what policies their politicians will promote once they get in power (or at least what they promise to promote).

Later, after the election this can be used to push the politicians to be at least a tiny bit accountable. Invite the leaders of each party to formulate - say 10 - 20 words - as a declaration on where the party stands on each issue. It can be done, it would not mean breaching any laws.. and it really really would help in moving the political debate towards issues instead of persons. To the benefit of all Thais.

Just my 10 cents, but still an idea.. ;)

Johan , you’ll be waiting a long, long time for answers to those questions!

As I said elsewhere, politicians in Thailand for the most part simply insult the intelligence of the people. They give themselves a “cool” name, promote themselves through patronage and recognition alone and offer absolutely nothing of substance.

FTM is simply old politicians who were greedy and useless in their prime seizing upon the political vacuum to grab one last piece of the pie.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: until the Thai people give these greedy old swine the backlash they deserve, they will continue to insult the intelligence and goodwill of Thai people by behaving how they do.

In my views, for the motherland group is not different from other factions. The political camp still set up by veteran politicians who claim to didicate themselves to the country. We can see their works from the past. So, what we should expect from its policies.

So what do the Motherland Group stand for?

The only thing Mr Surakiart actually mentions is the need of 'reconciliation'and then a lot of talk about that it is important to have a functional political system. Sure, that's the easy part that we all agree on. But where do they stand on policy issues ? What political agenda will they promote ? To my experience, that would be what you talked about in an interview like this, if you were a serious politician.

Can anyone explain ? Do the Motherland Group even have an agenda or a political standpoint ?
If so, what ?

I would be very interested in getting a short translation from a Thai person where the Motherland Group stand on the following issues:

# censorship and freedom of expression
# anti-corruption strategies/policies
# international trade
# education
# public service - health care, pensions etc.
# environmental issues
# the problem with police and law-enforcement corruption

If they are serious politicians they should be able to tell. If not, it's all ridiculous BS IMHO.

Peace ;)
