Unreal Monkhood, Lottery, and the Civil Service System are the Three Biggest Evils that Will Keep Thailand Behind Forever |
First, the phony monks which wrap themselves in the yellow robes without any intention to learn or practice Buddha's teaching at all. They reasons for entering the monkhood may vary from economic to superstition. Any homeless, jobless, aimless, or criminal can simply go into the temple and become a monk. Unfortunately, the number of this kind of monks is quite large. Then, other monks, after living in the temple and religious environment for a time, some would try to establish themselves as the superhuman with supernatural power to tell fortune, conduct superstitious rituals, foretell lottery results, create charm power for others, etc. The former and the latter groups of the monks contributed very greatly to the growth of the "untrying" or "lazy" culture by offering a chance to "get something for nothing." All it takes for the people to hope for a change for the better is just buring a few or maybe a few hundreds of the incenses. With these practices and values planted deeply in Thai society, then come the lottery which prospered along with the fortune telling, charm making, and winning number predicting among the phony monks in the most natural state of 'symbiosis." In not too many countries other than Thailand can you find as many people who simply holds no meaningful occupations other than playing lotteries as a mean of living. This is a truly deeply planted poison against any effort to educate or improve the quality of the citizen. Then for those few who goes to schools, the Civil Service System simply treat every holder of the same certificate or degree to be equal. This has removed any motivation for a large number of student to gain any real knowledge besides getting the "paper." Once you enter either the civil service or the monkhood, Thai society will have to pay a lifelong meal ticket for the person. So, become a monk, gamble on lottery. Only the fools go to school. Then, you can buy a fake certificate or degree quite easily and with a little bribe get a civil service job. So, why study? Why work hard? |
