Rain and Robe in Burma

Burma’s military junta was in a serous trouble with the on-going Buddhist monk protest throughout the country. Generals in Nay Pyi Taw dispatched their foreign minister Nyan Win to Beijing and Moscow two weeks ago to explain the situation and sought assistance to reduce international pressure over the matter.

Nyan Win managed to get partly support from China and Russia as the two superpowers voted against a US proposal to raise Burma’ issue in the United Nations Security Council.

However, the issue was finally in the agenda as Washington won majority vote in the 15-member council mid this month.

Nyan Win, reportedly would accuse “powerful” member of the UNSC for ganging up on Burma when he has a chance to take a floor in the UN General Assembly meeting in New York on Wednesday (Sep.26)

This struggle is tough for the junta as the protest on the ground is going on and pressure from the international community during the UN annual meeting is mounting.

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice was about to hold a meeting with her counterpart from the Asean on the sideline of the UN meeting this week. Diplomatic sources declined to predict the atmosphere of meeting but said it might be hotter than last year. Other sources said Rice would ignore representative from Burma to send her signal of disagreement to the junta.

No matter how the meeting is, the Burmese junta was walking under the heavy rain.
