Festival Time in Bangkok! |
| It's festival-time in Bangkok, like it's in India, with Dussera and Diwali just around--! The Internat Music-Dance Festival is just around There are the usual goodies, and some extra 'scoops' - great shows from 'friendly' neighbours, China and Taiwan! Also , a world-premiere from one of the best Kathak dance-institutions in India- doubtless it will be another jam-packed hall, as for last year's sizzling show. Kathak is after all, the 'Whirling Dervish' dance of India-- And then, there's the Bangkok Internat Film Fest, with a lot of goodies, from the top festivals of the world. As with last year, there's some strong indie stuff from Phillippines, some of which I saw at the exciting Cinemalaya film fest,in Manila,in July. There's SO much we can learn from this fest, which is a total show of indie talent - discovered, supported , and exhibited by the Cinemalaya Foundation ! No wonder the country's young film-makers are creating such big waves around the world. Brilliante Mendoza, who won the Best Director at Cannes this year, was at the fest,to support the work of his collagues. Also at the fest was young Alexis Tioseco, the young, intense film critic, who was brutally killed by robbers, last week ! I've met Alex at so many festivals in Bangkok and India, and this senseless killin seem worse than a B-grade film. This economic depression has made monsters of men- Cinema may be a good anti-depressant. I saw some interesting 'new-wave' Bollywood films, during a trip to India, last month, and am happy that some of them will be shown at the first Bollywood Film Fest, in the city, next month. Alos,in town will be a spectacular musical 'Merchants of Bollywood '. It may not be as famous as 'Mama Mia' , but it should set the stage on fire- the dazzling range of music, dance, colour, spectacle , is 'Incredible India' at its mostest! There's a LOT to look forward to, for the culture-vulture----- Festive time indeed, like in India-- |
