OK, I am starting a new blog adventure by taking a temporary sabbatical in the OKNation blog site!  My reasons?  Share some of my more popular Nation blogs in a bilingual format: good both for Thai readers wanting to develop their English and for me wanting to keep up with my Thai.  Maybe in the process get more OKNation bloggers interested in either reading the blogs on the Nation site or indeed contributing their own blogs to it, to broaden our blogging community.

I will tell you one secret though.  I got a lot of help with the translation of my blogs into Thai.  I could probably have a go at translating myself but it would take me ages for each blog and it still wouldn’t be very good. So I hope you don’t mind me cheating a bit.

เมื่อวานนี้ ตอนผมขึ้นรถไฟเข้าลอนดอน ผมสังเกตเห็นสาวๆชาวเอเชียนบนชานชาลา แต่งตัวโก้เก๋ในชุดเสื้อกันหนาวซึ่งแลดูสวยราวกับภาพวาด นับเป็นการเริ่มต้นวันทำงานอันแสนยาวนานของผมอย่างอบอุ่นกายและใจหาใดเทียบจริงๆ

I got the train to London yesterday and noticed some Asian girls on the platform.  Pretty as a picture they were.  Smartly dressed and wrapped up against the cold.  Seeing them warmed my morning before my long day of work.

ความรู้สึกเช่นนี้ทำให้ผมต้องถามตัวเองว่า ทำไมผมถึงมองว่าสาวไทยน่ารักกว่าสาวฝรั่งนะ? ผมคงไม่ใช่ชายฝรั่งคนเดียวหรอกครับที่รู้สึกเช่นนี้ เพราะเพื่อนหลายๆคนได้เคยเล่าให้ผมฟังแล้วว่า ไม่ค่อยมีผู้ชายดีๆ คิดอยากจะออกเดทกับสาวฝรั่งที่ยังเป็นโสดและทำงานอยู่ในกรุงเทพสักเท่าไร ส่วนผมซึ่งกลับมาเยี่ยมบ้านที่อังกฤษได้ประมาณอาทิตย์หนึ่งแล้ว ก็ขอสารภาพเช่นกันว่า ผมแทบจะยังไม่เห็นสาวโสดชาวอังกฤษคนไหนน่าสนใจเลยตั้งแต่กลับมา ผมว่าเรื่องนี้มันคงเป็นเรื่องของรสนิยมส่วนบุคคลเสียมากกว่า และนี่ก็เป็นเพียงความคิดเห็นของผมเท่านั้น        

But it made me ask myself.  Why do I find Thai and Asian girls much cuter than farang girls?  I can’t be the only farang man who feels this way.  I know from many of my friends that single farang women professionals in Bangkok often struggle to find a decent guy who is interested in dating them.  And I have been home now for a week and I have barely seen a single farang girl who I find attractive.  Everything is down to personal taste I suppose and this is just my opinion.

ผู้ชายหลายๆ คนคงรู้สึกเช่นกันว่าความแตกต่างคือความดึงดูดใจ ก็เรือนผมดำมันขลับ นัยน์ตาเล็กรีเหมือนถั่วอัลมอนด์ และรอยยิ้มหวานๆของสาวไทยนั่นแหละที่ตรึงใจเป็นนัก แต่เอาเข้าจริง ผมว่ามันเป็นเรื่องของสัดส่วนและรูปร่างเป็นอย่างแรกเลย ก็เพราะสาวไทยหรือสาวเอเชียนโดยทั่วไปแล้วมักมีรูปร่างเล็กกระทัดรัด เมื่อเทียบกับฝรั่งเพศเดียวกัน ผมจะยกตัวอย่างให้ดูก็ได้ อย่างหลานสาววัย 18 ของผมเนี่ย เรียกได้ว่าเป็นเด็กสาวหน้าตาสวยเลยทีเดียว แต่ถ้าใครเห็นใครก็ต้องพูดเป็นเสียงเดียวกันว่าน้ำหนักเธอเกินพิกัด และการแต่งตัวของเธอก็ไม่ได้ผิดแปลกไปจากเด็กอังกฤษวัยเดียวกัน คือเป็นการแต่งตัวที่เน้นรูปร่างอันใหญ่โต มากเสียกว่าที่จะพยายามแต่งตัวอำพรางจุดด้อยนั้น  

Some men will always find attractiveness in otherness of course.  The glossy black hair, almond eyes and sweet smiles of Thai girls are certainly very appealing.  But at a very basic level it must also be an issue of size.  Thai and Asian girls generally are more petite in stature when compared to their farang counterparts.  For example, my 18 year old niece is a pretty girl for sure.  But she is by any definition overweight.  And like so many English girls she dresses in such a way which accentuates her size, rather than softens it to the eye.

เด็กสาวชาวอังกฤษหลายๆคนแต่งตัวไม่ค่อยจะเข้ากับสภาพอากาศเท่าไรด้วยครับ อย่างเช่นบนรถไฟเมื่อวานนี้ ผมเห็นสาวท้วมนางหนึ่งใส่กางเกงขาสั้นจุ๊ด แถมไม่คิดที่จะใส่ถุงน่องเพื่อให้ร่างกายอบอุ่นขึ้นเลยสักนิด ส่วนสาวอื่นก็ดูเหมือนว่าอยากจะโชว์ความอวบอึ๋มให้ทุกคนเห็น โดยการแต่งตัวเน้นย้ำห่วงยางไขมันหลายชั้นรอบเอวของพวกเธอ ซึ่งไม่น่ามองเอาเสียเลย ถึงแม้ว่าลึกๆแล้ว พวกเธอคงจะตั้งใจแต่งตัวให้ดูเซ็กซี่ (แต่พลาด) กันก็ตาม แต่ก็อย่าเข้าใจผิดนะครับ สาวอังกฤษไม่ได้อ้วนอวบอั๋นกันทุกคนหรอก แต่ก็ดูเหมือนว่าจะเป็นเปอร์เซ็นที่สูงกว่าสาวร่างบางอยู่ดี จากผลสำรวจของผมในช่วง 7 วัน ตั้งแต่ผมกลับบ้านมานี่แหละ       

So many English girls dress in a manner which doesn’t suit the weather either.  On the train yesterday was another chubby girl wearing very short shorts and no stockings to warm her legs. Other girls like to display the rolls of their midriff.   It isn’t a pretty sight. Although deep down I sense that these girls might be trying to dress in a way which appears sexy, albeit failing.  Don’t get me wrong.  Not all English girls are fat.  But a very large proportion seem to be from my straw sample of seven days in country.

แต่ผมก็ว่ามันไม่ใช่เรื่องของสัดส่วนเพียงอย่างเดียวเป็นแน่ ก็อย่างที่ผมเกริ่นไว้ก่อนหน้านี้ไงครับ ว่าการแต่งตัวก็เป็นอีกหนึ่งปัจจัยที่สำคัญ ดูอย่างหน้า 1 ของหนังสือพิมพ์ Telegraph ฉบับเมื่อวาน ที่ลงรูปเด็กสาวชาวเอเชียนเดินช็อปปิ้งอยู่ในลอนดอนเป็นตัวอย่างก็ได้ เธอไม่ได้ถึงขั้นสวยบาดใจหรอกครับ แต่เธอแต่งตัวเก๋ดี กับเสื้อโค้ตสีแดงสดใสและรองเท้าบู๊ตสูงถึงเข่า ผมว่าเธอดูน่ารักน่ามองมากๆ และสาวๆที่ผมเห็นในกรุงเทพก็เช่นกัน ที่มีลีลาการแต่งตัวที่ไม่หวือหวาแต่น่ามอง อย่างเช่นกระโปรงลายสวย สีสันสดใส และก็ไม่ใช่ในเชิงที่เปิดเว้าเร้าใจไปถึงไหนเกินควร บวกกับเครื่องประดับผมที่ผ่านการคัดสรรมาแล้วเป็นอย่างดี โอเค ผมยอมรับว่าสภาพอากาศเมืองร้อนมีผลในการแต่งตัวตามแบบฉบับของสาวไทย แต่ความต้องการและการรักที่จะแต่งตัวในแบบนั้นๆก็เป็นปัจจัยสำคัญเช่นกันนะครับ อย่างน้อยสำหรับตัวผมเองเนี่ย ผมว่าผู้หญิงที่ไม่ได้ตั้งใจแต่งตัวให้ดูเซ็กซี่น่ะ ดูเซ็กซี่และน่าสนใจกว่าคนที่พยายามมากเกินไปเสียอีกด้วยซ้ำ     

But it isn’t just about size though surely?  As hinted above, manner of dress is also important.  On the front page of yesterday’s Telegraph was a photograph of a young Asian girl out shopping in London.  She wasn’t exceptionally beautiful.  But she was dressed in such a nice smart way, with a pretty red coat on and knee length boots that I found her quite adorable to look at.  So many of the girls I see in Bangkok have a manner of dress which is both modest and attractive.  Pretty print skirts which are not overly revealing, bright colours and neatly made up accessorized hair.  OK, to some extent the manner of dress must be driven by the tropical weather in Thailand. But the desire for a level of modesty in dress is also important too.  And for me at least, a girl who doesn’t try too hard to appear sexy is far more sexy and attractive than one who does.

ยังมีปัจจัยไหนอีกนะที่ทำให้สาวไทยน่าสนใจกว่า? อาจจะเป็นเพราะมารยาทอันเรียบร้อยเหมือนผ้าพับไว้ของพวกเธอด้วยก็ได้นะครับ ดังจะเห็นได้ว่าพฤติกรรมการพูดจาหยอกล้อหยาบๆคายๆ ตะโกนโหวกเหวกโวยวายกันในกลุ่มเด็กสาวชาวไทยกลางกรุงเทพคงจะเป็นภาพที่ไม่คุ้นตากันนัก แต่ถ้าเป็นกลุ่มเด็กสาวชาวอังกฤษในเซ้าธ์แฮมป์ตันละก็ คงไม่น่าแปลกใจนักหรอก ลองสุ่มเดินเข้าผับหรือที่เที่ยวที่ไหนก็ได้ในอังกฤษดูสิครับ รับรองว่าจะเห็นภาพสาวชาวอังกฤษกรอกเหล้าเข้าปากและสูบบุหรี่ปุ๋ยๆได้แบบผู้ชายต้องขอยอมแพ้ แถมพวกเธอยังมีส่วนเป็นตัวจุดประกายให้เกิดความสัมพันธ์ประเภทเอามันส์ชั่วข้ามคืนอีกด้วย ก็เพราะเป็นเรื่องที่รู้กันอยู่แล้วว่า กฎเกณฑ์ในเรื่องของเซ็กส์ในโลกตะวันตกยังคงหละหลวมกว่าโลกตะวันออกอยู่มาก

What else is it about Thai girls?  Is it because their manners are more riab roi?  It is perhaps less common to happen across a group of Thai girls in Bangkok acting in a raucous way flinging around bawdy badinage than it would be to find English girls acting in said way in the centre of Southampton.  Go to an English pub or night-spot and many of the girls will be chugging as much alcohol and smoking as many cigarettes as the men.   They will in many cases also be the instigators of intimate one night encounters, the boundaries on sexual relations still being more loosely cast in the west than they are in the East (as a general rule).

อาจจะเป็นไปได้ว่าหญิงไทยและผู้หญิงเอเชียนโดยรวม ยังเคยชินกับการเป็นช้างเท้าหลังอยู่ โดยการเรียกร้องสิทธิความเท่าเทียมกันหรือความเป็นอิสระนั้น ยังเป็นเรื่องที่ล้าหลังโลกตะวันตกอยู่หลายขุม ซึ่งทำให้ชายฝรั่งเอ็นจอยความรู้สึกที่ตัวเองเป็นผู้นำ เป็นคนที่อยู่เหนือกว่าและสามารถควบคุมสถานะการณ์ความสัมพันธ์ของเขากับสาวไทยหรือสาวเอเชียนได้

Or could it be that the advance of the women’s liberation movement in Thailand and the Orient is still far behind that of the west and farang men enjoy the greater feeling of being in control in relationships with Thai and Asian girls?

อย่างที่ผมว่าไปแล้วตอนต้นนั่นแหละครับ ต่างคนก็ต่างความคิด ต่างรสนิยมกันไป ผู้ชายบางคนอาจจะชอบผู้หญิงบึกบึนล่ำสัน ดื่มเหล้าได้เป็นแกลลอนและต่อปากต่อคำด้วยฝีปากแสบสันกับเขาได้ ก่อนที่จะแบกเขาซึ่งหมดสภาพกลับบ้านไป แต่ผมก็ยังเชื่อว่าลึกๆแล้ว ผู้ชายส่วนใหญ่ก็ยังรู้สึกว่าหญิงสาวมารยาทงามหน้าตาจิ้มลิ้ม รูปร่างดีและแต่งตัวดีนั้นน่าสนใจกว่า ผมก็คนหนึ่งล่ะที่รู้สึกเช่นนั้น จึงเป็นสาเหตุที่ทำให้ผมมองว่าสาวไทยน่ะน่ารักกว่าสาวฝรั่งเป็นไหนๆ  

As I said at the top, everyone has different tastes.  Some men may like well padded women, who can drink them under the table and out smut them before carrying them to bed.   But I think that a large number of men, at heart, find sweet looking, well manner girls with nice clothes and figures, quite adorable.  I certainly do.  And that is why for me Thai girls are far cuter than farangs.
