How do we get to Thailand?--by boat?

When I was 18, I've discovered how much I love Chiang Mai and how bad I wish my family is from there--the rest of my family members to be exact. So for the first time I asked my parents; how come my grandparents didn't choose Chiang Mai as their destination to start their family.

Both of my parents' answer is the same: "Because there was no boat going to Chiang Mai, so they had to settle for what came first. Sorry."

I still wonder if this is true. Many of you guys may be able to answer my lifelong curiosity. My fraternal grandparents are both from China. According to my dad's historical knowledge, my grandpa and ma floated themselves with other chinese dudes to Thailand--somehow had settled in Hua Hin. My maternal grandpa and ma came from Japan. My mom doesn't know a thing about how they got to Had Yai in the first place. Some of my grandparents had passed away before I was born, others passed before I was 10 years old. So I'm now stuck with some questions left unanswered.

I guess last time I made a statement with my parents I told them whenever I settle in Thailand, come see me in Chiang Mai.

I'm looking for a house there in the future. Since unemployment rate is still pretty high, I figure it ain't happening any time soon.

This is a pretty much nothing blog--more of a statement blog. I guess I want to write something light.

aaww..see, nowadays, putting anything in writing can put one at risk. Oh, p'Veena, you know you are always welcome and hang out or live permanently. I'm sure I can use your help with morgage.

BTW: Do you think getting a house is better than buying a condo?

It's pretty affordable if you save enough US $$$. I mean for about some Bt1 million, you can get a single-detached house located just 20 minutes from the airport. My friend's "mooban" is not so bad and it is about that price. It would cost like Bt3.5-5 million in Bangkok. You can google and survey the price. It is much cheaper than Bangkok.

btw, Be careful when you put it in writing... you will be surprised to see my tent on your property when you've got one

Thanks Pomjuk...I wonder where and how do you get this information.

P'Veena, you know you are always welcome to set your tent anywhere on my property. The problem is, I have none at this time

Wonder about the cost of a house in Chiang Mai.

I do enjoy this 'nothing' blog of your. Hey, I just went to Chiang Mai for my best friend's wedding. She has settled there. I'm sure you can find a lovely house in Chiang Mai and please look for a big plot so I can go and visit you once in a while and set up my tent...

I remember my conversation with a ferry operator across Thajean River many months ago about how good the Chinese immigrated sailors were in the old days when they took the Chinese Junk Boats up and down the Siam gulf carrying wood burning charcoal from HadYai up to port on Thajean River. That old Chinese Junk Boat did not have an engine so it was really hard to put the boat up the river and in those day there were no VHF radio, no GPS, no wind direction gage nor depth sounder, so these sailor must have been very skillful and very good at celestial navigation.

And the name Samui Island probably not Japanese but it sure sounds very Japanese to me. Samui means cold in Japanese. I remember reading about a history of a battle between the Japanese Samurais and Thai sword men somewhere down south you may have been the descendent of one of those samurais.

Pond: Lord Buddha said..."Be contented of what you are & what you have (and will ever have)."

Life is short- and not many people won a lottery, since their own birth...do what you, can do...and be what you aspires to be.

If you have done yr best, that is the end of it---then
be happy & contented!

PS- Oh, I don't believe in any "lotteries", just metaphorically speaking!
