Technology Implications of Change in Daylight Savings Time (DST)

Due to the passage of the Energy Policy Act of 2005, the dates for the change to Daylight Savings Time and back to Standard Time in 2007 differ from previous years. The time change this fall takes place on November 4, which is one week later than normal. This change affects computers and other technology, including PDAs and cell phones in several ways as explained below.

In preparation for the Spring, 2007 time change, most software vendors provided software patches to accommodate the revised schedule and these patches were installed on all systems at Loyola where applicable. However, it has become apparent that some vendor-supplied patches only addressed the March time change and not the one coming up in November.

Because Microsoft did not release the patch for Windows that addresses the fall time change until late summer, any meetings or appointments that have been scheduled for next week, October 28 to November 4, may not display at the correct time in GroupWise or other calendars.

Technology Services strongly recommends that users resend all appointments they made which fall between October 28 and November 4 and include the meeting time in the "Subject:" line. This will minimize possible confusion about the intended time of the appointment if it displays incorrectly in GroupWise or another calendar. It is crucial that the computer or mobile device from which the appointment is being resent be patched prior to resending.

Windows-based computers:
In order to display the correct time during this three-week period, all Windows-based computers need to have patches applied to them. Technology Services has attempted to push the Microsoft-provided patches which were designed to install without user intervention to all College-owned computers. However, we know that, for various reasons, the patches failed to install on some computers.
