C29 - What is that I learned about Thai from GG? Quite a lot, he explains things well........but that's because he's not Thai. I would ask you, but I know how thick primitive people of your era from your neck of the woods are -why do you think they named that big gorilla King Kong?

Wow that's a long time.

Panya, 36. Add nostril twitching, ear twitching, symmetrical winking, bottom lip everting, double jointedness, many more, it's a long list
They all are genetically determined although some are racially specific. The tongue, mouth and face are a mass of tiny muscles and nerves so it is not suprising that there will be variations. The only other region that comes anywhere near the same concentrations of nerve endings are the genitalia. Hence the two brains analogy

I can believe that, as some people need to breathe out before they can roll the R. But I think with French the normal speaking is to use the gutteral, and those who cannot use the rolling. At least, that was what my kid's French teacher thought.

Tongue curling must be genetic. My kids can both do it, as can I, but my wife cannot. What about pulsing the nostrils, like a fish opens and closes its gills? I think that may be genetic as well.

Panya, the ability to roll the "R" with a vibrating tongue tip is a genetic ability, not everyone can do it. When I lived in France I noticed that those who could, did, those who could not used a gutteral method.
In Thailand I have tested the local kids at vocalised tongue vibration, only a few can do it successfully.
The same applies to tongue "curling".

catch, Thais have a lazy tongue for Ror Rua as against Lor ling when speaking English. They so like to L when it should be R and vice versa.

GG C32

I'm sorry but I must correct you. The French do not pronounce the letter R with tongue bouncing, more often referred to as 'rolling the R'. The French pronounce it as a guttural sound where the back of the tongue meets the top of the throat, similar but not hte same as the Q is pronounced in Farsi.

The sound of 'rolling the R' is how the Spanish pronounce 'rr' in a word like 'perro' (meaning dog). They pronounce a single R as the English do, as in the word 'pero' (meaning but).

I recommend farang listen to good Thai newscasters, from whom one can usually hear the correct sound.

As for 'Ror Rua' (Boat), it is not impossible to pronounce, but you need to make extra effort to pronounce it correctly.

The lazy ones just pronounce it as simple 'R', and lazier ones go as far as pronouncing it as an 'L'.

But the correct pronounciation is to say 'R' like the French do, with a lot of tongue bouncing action, but unlike the French, Thais don't drag it as far as making R sound like K.

If you understand this comment, it means you already know what I'm talking about.

Catch : The Lor Ling (Monkey), when placed in front of a vowel, is pronouncable by the Thai, and it's pronounced like an 'L' as in (Ling).

However, when it's put after a vowel, as in 'CentraL', the L becomes unpronouncable to Thais, and it becomes an 'N'. (Cen-taN)

Same as farang has become falang...is there a defect in their palate that the inventor of the language didn't have?

CHUL is supposed to sound like CHALL.

Thais will say,

"CHOON" or "CHUN"

or even worse, "CHOOY"

It's the L at the end which is the tricky part.

Is there any special reason why they have letters in their alphabet that they can't pronounce....like rua?

Actually, GGrass, or Green Grass, is not what you think.

My name is CHUL, which the Thais couldn't pronounce, so I called myself CHO, and CHO means 'GRASS' in Korean.

And grass should be green, hence GreenGrass or GGrass.

C6 - Really....what's the connection between expresso and coffee then?

I think you should have called yourself Espresso if you wanted to be associated with a concentrated coffee beverage brewed by forcing hot water under pressure through finely ground coffee.

I haven't heard of Expresso coffee, but you might know otherwise.

Re C8,
Khun Patriot, I call myself differently but I join you for your love for our country.
I could love anyone who sincerely loves Thailand even when we have different ways to present our loves.
And I piss off those who pretend to care for Thailand but, in fact, abuse her for their personal gains.

Well, Naive, if you walk along rice fields in the rainy season, you may see a small, timid flower which has Yabua as local name and has the botanical name exactly like my real name.

I chose the screen name Patriot because I wholeheartedly love and believe in Thailand and the people of this great nation. No matter what the circumstances are, no matter what the challenges are, no matter what sacrifices are necessary, a Patriot stands up for what is right by loyally being ready to help when ever and where ever needed.

Patriots are universal, every nation big or small has it own Patriots that makes them proud to be a part of their respective countries. For me it is not just a screen name but rather an expression of my support for a country that I am so grateful to be a part of.

I used to be 'disappointed'; but that was during thaksin the junrai's regime of democratic facism.

After he was booted out I thus was 'not disappointed'.

Shortened to ND doesn't change the meaning.

Yossarian: Is Orr crazy?
Dr. 'Doc' Daneeka: Of course he is. He has to be crazy to keep flying after all his close calls he's had.
Yossarian: Why can't you ground him?
Dr. 'Doc' Daneeka: I can, but first he has to ask me.
Yossarian: That's all he's gotta do to be grounded?
Dr. 'Doc' Daneeka: That's all.
Yossarian: Then you can ground him?
Dr. 'Doc' Daneeka: No. Then I cannot ground him.
Yossarian: Aah!
Dr. 'Doc' Daneeka: There's a CATCH?
Yossarian: A catch?
Dr. 'Doc' Daneeka: Sure. Catch-22. Anyone who wants to get out of combat isn't really crazy, so I can't ground him.
Yossarian: Ok, let me see if I've got this straight. In order to be grounded, I've got to be crazy. And I must be crazy to keep flying. But if I ask to be grounded, that means I'm not crazy anymore, and I have to keep flying.
Dr. 'Doc' Daneeka: You got it, that's Catch-22.
Yossarian: Whoo... That's some catch, that Catch-22.
Dr. 'Doc' Daneeka: It's the best there is.

"Felix qui potuit rerum cognoscere causas"
is a well known line from Vergil's Georgics (2.490). I just borrowed the first two words.

I especially like the line and those following for their being a homage to the Epicurean poet Lucretius, whose longish "De Rerum Natura" enthralled me when I read it as an undergraduate many years ago.

And it goes so well with the "Felix the Cat" cartoons that I loved as a child, and from which I've borrowed the image.

"Felix felicis" from "Harry Potter and teh Half Blood Prince" came much later and has no bearing on it.

My screen name is my real name, it is short and simple and easy to type. people who choose long names like "notdissappointed" or another blogger I know called "power_to_the _people" invariably get shortened to ND or P2P

My email name has a history though, I first started using email about 20 years ago when computers were expensive items. So we had just one family computer and email address. My son is Anthony, my daughter is Erica and I am Ian, so I combined them to make anterian. When I first opened a yahoo account I made a mistake, so when I retried they said anterian was already in use, so I added the 36, my year of birth. Many people think it is my age
