The economist Ammar Siamwalla once described IMF's reform prescription during the '97 financial crisis as "the kiss of death". I asked Hubert Neiss, then IMF's director for Asia and Pacific - during tea break at The Nation's recent financial crisis roundtable forum - if Siamwalla's statement was fair and justified. (Despite the background music, I really did interview him in the forum. Heh.)
