Rubbing Shoulders with Master Sagmeister

It is quite an honour to meet Herr Sagmeister (www.sagmeister.com) - not least because he is arguably one of the best contemporary designers around. But I'm actually more interested to hear him talk about his mentor the late Tibor Kalman. So I did ask him about his first boss when he was here in Bangkok for the Creativities Unfold 07/08 workshop held at the Thailand Creative and Design Centre. And th....

Johnny Damon: A NY YANKEES Slugger in Bangkok

We talked to the Yankees' Johnny Damon and his lovely mother at the American Ambassador's residence. No one in Thailand seems to realise the magnitude of this guy. To baseball, he's a bigger star-player than Beckham to football. When he's still with the Red Sox, he led the team back from three games down to beat the Yabkees in seven and then went on to clinch the World Series, ending the 86-year cham....

The End of News Media, Long Live News Media!

What is not, however, possible in this new news medium is to actually report news—that is, to be able to afford to report it. The paper version of The New York Times has 1.1 million daily readers and makes less than $2 billion a year; the online version has 40 million readers a month and likely makes about $250 million—a problem, since the Times's newsgathering budget is about $300 million. This is s....

Since my Facebook has been gaining momentum and reaching a certain level of critical mass, I have almost forgotten about this blog altogether. It's much easier to share things with the genteel friends. At anyrate, I thought I might as well post this item on the confused Nation Multimedia United Colours Blog.Read in the BBC News website that the Sabretooth Tiger actually has a very weak bite. Its mass....

The referendum for the constitution effects all Thais. But I cannot vote, although I am as Thai as Surayud Chulanont. So except for my mother, my sister and I, all my household, including all my extended family are now Thai. That said, you would not have known how marginalised I feel. My first language is Thai. And I did feel ridiculous for that crewcut hairdo in primary and secondary school.Like Fran....

The Kiss of Death (Vodcast with Hubert Neiss)

The economist Ammar Siamwalla once described IMF's reform prescription during the '97 financial crisis as "the kiss of death". I asked Hubert Neiss, then IMF's director for Asia and Pacific - during tea break at The Nation's recent financial crisis roundtable forum - if Siamwalla's statement was fair and justified. (Despite the background music, I really did interview him in the forum. He....
