Fantasy polls - amusing!

Read this: http://www.nationmultimedia.com/breakingnews/30116021/Abhisits-popularity-soars-three-times-for-downgrad.

The level of state media control has become very amusing indeed.

How about Abhisit doing some mud-wrestling with school kids? The polls will sky rocket - Abhisit 1000% more popular.

Maverick 65. Many of us are seeking the same goal for Thailand, our differences are mainly in the paths we choose. Thailand future survival lies in our ability to merge these paths into a major highway. If this cannot be achieved then Thailand will mirror this blogsite, torn apart and in disarray.

I think it is clear what went wrong with your education Xprezo Your problem is not that you couldn't get to the truth because it were exclusive but that you can't accept it and, thus substitute it with anger and aggression and delusions.

In your case at least the neurosis comes out very clearly and loudly unlike the more professional 'I hide my prejudice types' that disguise themselves as journalists.

So you should go and see someone - seek professional help

C57: none of the ones you have listed and not AV, Banharn etc. We as a society have let it come this far: the Thai career politicians are a particularly ugly variety rooted in political prostitution, so now we have to deal with that and create an environment in which alternative faces can move up.

So yes, new parties with new faces, electoral reform, courage, active citizens would be needed.

Is there enough juice?

Well there's got to be and I believe that the 'who if not me' slogan of the current political caste is just their way to discourage the electorate from looking for alternatives.

Ian: so then that must hurt him most because he is very fond of his image on the international stage. Btw. after SpamPM and Obamark there's now another Thai nickname for him - one that translates as Speech Man.

The reality is: there is much work to do but all we see is his infantile outbursts of anger and floods of words. In various ministries he practically has made every decision HIS decision (sort of only the great leader can tell) and frustrated bureaucrats have just given him that. Now the country has been brought to a halt as no one in bureaucracy will do his work anymore because everyone's unsure if he's allowed to make any decision.

Abhisit has setup numerous 'steering' committees none of which quite know what their mandate is supposed to be and they get little support by their bureaucratic basis. Also many committes have identical mandates.

Chaos reigns in about every ministerial corridor now.

Budgets - all except salaries for bureaucrats - regular budgets as well as stimulus budget are 2-3 months behind schedule. Many are arbitrarily thrown back for inspection but no one knows who shall inspect what.

In the meantime dark figures try to bribe the newly setup committees or put their nominees there - just in case. Dubious business men propose overpriced deals for equipment and 'consulting' services that are more difficult to scrutinize.

Old project partners for government programs are wiped out by AVs boss decisions by a simple word without any legality whatsoever. Some can wait for money others pull out, some go bankrupt.

Dark business figures try to write new TORs for those budgets where the original bidder and legal recipient (that won the bid after the imperfect but still arduous Thai bureaucracy for public projects) has now become extinct - after all that budget has to be spent. So these 'new' TORs are setup overnight and are supposed to sail though committee approval.

Public sector performance to bring the economy back up is close to zero - the catastrophe imminent. In the private sector most not connected to the dark business figures have lost any hope for any progress.

In the meantime it makes me smile that the military has just decided to built the country's largest military base ever seen in Khon Kaen - for so much money a figure like THB xx BN that instead 300,000 sustainable jobs could be created and 20x larger than all the R&D budgets for the entire country.

Hail Abhisit - inventor of the creative economy. May the tanks and fighter jets make us farmers smarter.

Yeah, I don't understand their over-reaction to these polls. In particular, I did not expect Max to come out as a conspiracy theorist like Lobo-San.

Anyway these polls are just reflecting the "first response" of Thai people to the government retaliation measure against Cambodia, so the number could change depending on how the situation develops, although there is no doubt that Thaksin got a big damage from this fiasco.

Ian, It has harmed his image internally more than internationally, that's is what the polls showed. That's why Thaksin and Chawalit is in panic mode, I guess. I think that Thai people take Thaksin's deed simply and rightly, they think Thaksin took the side of a neigbhoring country with which Thailand has sever teritorial disputes, for his own political benefit. It swayed the opinon of the usually apolitical independents against him. I think this is what's happining now, and I don't know how Thaksin can change the trend. Let's wait and see what he will say next Tuesday. It's interesting.

plaadip, I don't see Thaksin's appointment as harming the Thai people, it clearly harms the Thai government, but why not, they have harmed him?
It may have enhanced his image internally but it has harmed his image internationally. Perhaps he does not care about his international image as it is already in tatters.
comment 40
Plaadip date : 08/11/2009 time : 12.29

And I think one of Thaksin's opitions for damage control is to turn down the offer from Hun Sen while Hun Sen's still insisiting the validity of the appointment, to put the government in an awkaward position. The red can say, "Thaksin sacrifice himself for the country's benefit, but the government is still using it as a poltiical tool" something like that. But I think it's still not easy for Thaksin to cast aside the turnished image. Cheers
comment 39
Plaadip date : 08/11/2009 time : 12.09

Ian, you should see the details of the poll. Core Thaksin supporters did not change their stance, but the people who used to prefer the netrual position, which accounted for 50 percent in the previous poll, voice their support for the government. I think those poll are all about "indepdendent", who weigh their support based on main issues at the time of polling. The support of the government will change anytime when a new big issue comes in, but more important is, that Thaksin made a big mistake to give the chance his oponets to lavel him a"traitor" and those "independents",who did not believe the same type of PAD propaganda, starts believing that it's what he is. I think it's not easy for Thaksin to recover from this damege.

New poll today. "popularity poll" Abhist around 60 percent, Thkasin 20 percnet. The support for Thaksin has changed little, (But got lower), Abisit popularity increased from 20 to 60. And this 20 percent support for Thaksin is quite similar to other polls if you translate it as "non-support" for the government, right?

Another poll today said more than 80 percent of the people said What Thaksin and Chawalit did with Cambodia is against the national interests of Thailand. Again, around 20 percent of respondents see their action in positive way, which is the similar percent of other polls. (The percentage of Red core supporters' response, I guess)

Now I hope you undersatnd the trend. I'm very sure Thaksin takes those number very seriously, unlike you. I think he is wishing these poll numbers could be a farce.

C14 / C19: it's interesting to see that the pro-government side keeps on sticking to the same tactic - cutting and pasting the same article over and over. This is the same we have seen for a couple of years now. Since I don't think it's really coordinated it would mean that they all share a common mind set like you talk to a Scientologist and a Jehovah Witness: both will come up with a quote rather than an independent opinion.

I have seen how these polls are made and if you ever worked with the youngsters filling out forms or doing calls you'll know it all - phone 20-25% real - invent the rest to what the customer finds most plausible, go an have a beer.

I wonder who intends here to elevate the level of credibility of polls to such a sublime level here? But it's a constant tactic of this fascist propaganda - mixing up things with different quality to lower the standard and destroy consensus. For example I have 2 scientific studies on the topic with carefully compiled data sets and someone comes along with a couple of opinions from the popular science mag.

So like Ian said - the media tell you that supposedly over night attitudes have changed and all the nation is now approving of the heroic acts of our great leader Abhisit - which of course is in stark contrast to what you see all around you

What does that mean?

It means that all that is simply propagandist bullshit and that if you believe that nonsense you are a poor fool that can't be helped and that is a danger to the rest the society because it can be manipulated into believing any nonsense even if the undeniable truth is right in front of his eyes.

In the politics of parliament cabinet system, if the poll numeber is bad, the ruling parties will not dissolve the parliament because they don't want to lose the election, and if the numberis good they are happy to stay in power, in other words, they won't dissolve the parliament anyway unless they are forced to do so. There were three polls indicating the people's reaction to the Thaksin-Hun Sen alliance, right?. Is the trend not very clear? Ok,you still cannot believe it. so how about the players' response to the poll. I just finished wathing Thaksin's phone in, tonight. He said like this, "Our MPs please don't rush to dump me. There surely be an election soon. I promise if you choose me, you would be elected again, so don't dump me." I was a little surprised that Thakins should beg like that. I think he just set up a place for some posters to vent their frustration. The poll result can change by day, for example, Thaksin will make a video link for damage control nest Tuesday, then some might swing back to their oritinal position, "neutral", then they will statisfy the poll result. But if it won't swing back to the level that makes them satisfied, they will complain again, shouting "manupilation". I think that it's the fate of pollstars in Thailand now, so they have to accpet it as good budhists. :)

Fantasy Polls, eh?

From the Bangkok Post Online dated today, Nov. 7, 2009:

Link: http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/local/26994/support-for-govt-rockets-after-protest

QUOTE:

Support for govt rockets after protest Most Thais oppose Thaksin giving advice

Published: 7/11/2009 at 12:00 AM
Newspaper section: News

The popularity of the Abhisit Vejjajiva government has soared after its diplomatic protest against Phnom Penh's appointment of convicted Thaksin Shinawatra as an economic adviser, an opinion poll has found.

And most Thais have told another poll they don't want Thaksin to offer advice to Cambodia.

Up to 68.8% of 3,709 respondents in 21 provinces have thrown their support behind the government, a huge increase on the 23.3% who backed it in September, according to an ABAC poll conducted by Assumption University, between Oct 25 and Thursday.

In northern provinces, including Thaksin's home town of Chiang Mai, and northeastern provinces, most people (64.6%) support the government.

In the Northeast, the opposition Puea Thai Party's stronghold, 53.1% support the government over the Cambodia issue. Thais believe Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen places his relationship with Thaksin over the importance of national ties with Thailand, said ABAC Poll Research Centre director Noppadol Kannikar.

Phnom Penh appointed Thaksin an economic adviser on Nov 4.

In protest, Thailand recalled its ambassador to Phnom Penh on Thursday.

While some diplomats say Thailand over-reacted and that the row threatens Asean's stability, most Thais back the government's response.

The Supreme Court's Criminal Division for Holders of Political Positions found Thaksin guilty of a conflict of interest in the Ratchadaphisek land purchase case in 2003, but Cambodia argued the charges against Thaksin were politically motivated.

Thais, however, still trusted the judicial system, Mr Noppadol said.

"The dispute is good for the government's support."

Meanwhile, a Dusit poll, conducted by Suan Dusit Rajabhat University over the last two days, found 69.2% of people sampled countrywide oppose Thaksin acting as adviser to Cambodia, which they believe could escalate tensions between the two countries.

Many people (33.12%) also wanted Mr Abhisit to review all agreements which Thailand had made with Cambodia, the poll says.

The New Politics Party, formerly the anti-Thaksin People's Alliance for Democracy, denounced Mr Hun Sen's move.

It was an attempt to interfere in Thailand's internal affairs, which could also "ravage the verdict of a Thai court", said the party secretary-general Suriyasai Katasila.

The anti-Thaksin group of 40 senators said the government should take the opportunity to revoke a memorandum of understanding in 2001 and an agreement in 2003 on maritime borders with Cambodia, reached when the Thaksin administration was in power, and to warn Thai businessmen against investment in Cambodia.

The government says it is reviewing all agreements with Cambodia, including the maritime one.

Senator Paiboon Nititawan also asked Thaksin whether he is still Thai. He warned Thaksin against serving two masters, which could never end happily.

I think that earning a few political pennies worth of capital by a quick show of national pride (pride being one of the 7 deadly sins) may excite but a few desperate PADies on the exclusively yellow phone list ABAC used.

Ian: Envy is another of the very popular sins around these days. But the 'poll' was just a plumb attempt to paint over Abhisit's loss of face in his confrontation with Hun Sen. His 'diplomatic retaliation' reaction is widely seen as a boy's attempt to lecture the master - and when this happens bad boys show their anger and bad temper and are not well-behaved.

Support for govt rockets after protest
Most Thais oppose Thaksin giving advice

He warned Thaksin against serving two masters, which could never end happily.

c12: Pa+ Yoon: Then you should have made it official by denoting the source of information on the news. Not making unofficial claim here. Everyone recognizes the quality of the media in Thailand and its ability to fabricate info.

Hi maxie and pjsy,

Are you guys looking at the same poll everybody else is looking at? The poll in question is not a Nation poll.

It's an ABAC Poll!

Remove left foot put in right foot.

Hum! This fellow might be
in's time a great buyer of land, with his statutes,
his recognizances, his fines, his double vouchers,
his recoveries: is this the fine of his fines, and
the recovery of his recoveries, to have his fine
pate full of fine dirt? will his vouchers vouch him
no more of his purchases, and double ones too, than
the length and breadth of a pair of indentures? The
very conveyances of his lands will hardly lie in this box; and must the inheritor himself have no more, ha?

Sorry I forgot you were illiterate!

Thailand is a fantasy to smooth over realty. Oppose reality to silence discontent. Discontent fosters thought. Thought induces thinking and a search for knowledge.

Knowledge is the enemy of power. Knowledge, if not destroyed, is controlled. Control the masses with mind manipulation. Mind manipulation induced with smoke, mirrors, foolish polls, and even newspapers that are foolish.

Noonin, are you likening Yorick's skull to the abhisit government which has lost its flesh?

HAMLET

That skull had a tongue in it, and could sing once:
how the knave jowls it to the ground, as if it were
Cain's jaw-bone, that did the first murder! It
might be the pate of a politician, which this ass
now o'er-reaches; one that would circumvent God,
might it not?

HAMLET
There's another: why may not that be the skull of a
lawyer? Where be his quiddities now, his quillets,
his cases, his tenures, and his tricks? why does he
suffer this rude knave now to knock him about the
sconce with a dirty shovel, and will not tell him of
his action of battery?

HAMLET
Let me see.

Takes the skull

Alas, poor Yorick! I knew him, Horatio: a fellow
of infinite jest, of most excellent fancy: he hath
borne me on his back a thousand times; and now, how
abhorred in my imagination it is! my gorge rims at
it. Here hung those lips that I have kissed I know
not how oft. Where be your gibes now? your
gambols? your songs? your flashes of merriment,
that were wont to set the table on a roar? Not one
now, to mock your own grinning? quite chap-fallen?
Now get you to my lady's chamber, and tell her, let
her paint an inch thick, to this favour she must
come; make her laugh at that. Prithee, Horatio, tell
me one thing.

HORATIO
What's that, my lord?

HAMLET
Dost thou think Alexander looked o' this fashion i'
the earth?

HORATIO
E'en so.

HAMLET
And smelt so? pah!

Puts down the skull

as the Nation media is strongly pro yellow, it is inevitable that a poll of it readers will show strong support for Abhisit. Attacking Hun Sen is exactly what the PAD wants.
