A country on (forced) vacation
Posted by MaxHeadroom , Reader : 704 , 21:52:54

Now, I am sure we all know the reason why this hasn't made big headlines on our government controlled media and caused a nationwide outcry. In the latest of a series of brain-dead attempts by Abhisit and Korn the government has announced two additional public holidays next week, technically sending the nation on a forced vacation.

In doing so it follows into the footsteps of the military junta and the Surayud administration who - in the absence of any better ideas for the economy or to improve their image - also tried their luck on government announced holidays. While illegal and probably unconstitutional (it represents a violation of anything from basic civil rights to commercial codex as well as failure to do their duty as public servants) it basically shows what state the current administation is in as all it can come up with is an act of desperation.

Now Abhisit and korn are not known for being good in primary school maths but their latest explanation that public holidays would help Thai tourism to cope with the absolutely destructive absence of foreign tourists by inducing our fellow citizens to spend their money on a short vacation sounds as sound to me as the 2,000 Baht hand-out which was followed by an increase of excise tax on fuel amidst a time of recession. Sure he might get a few sympathetic looks from mid-level bureaucrats that have nothing much to do anyway but even the government offices - already late with everything and on the brink of bureaucratic collapse - might not enjoy this vacation prior to a hot summer before the next fiscal budget.

So many populist policies gone bad? Maybe the Spam PM's sweet time with Newin was parent to this outburst of idiocy... Well we will probably never know.

But what we will see soon is that choking off commerce and industry at a time when everybody has to go 200% to make it through the recession will further deteriorate our already comatose economy. So while the countries around us work extra Thailand is going on a vacation. It's a symbol of our performance.

This stunt is will further add to negative growth and the government will cause another couple of billions of damage. But wait - let me see - the PM can always borrow more money for us to go on vacation - right?

As his ministers and party members recently told me: 'You know Max - government has no money. This year no money but next year ...'

Beautiful - we are led by a bunch of completely insane people shredding the economy to pieces and keeping their chairs by occasionally sending the tanks into the street of the capital. Senile military or silly nominees or money sucking corrupt proxies - who cares. Well, this is a question by itself: why does no one apparently care - because a low level of education combined with a complete lack of awareness and a lot of nationalist propaganda and a lot of autocracy is what makes up a banana republic.

Enough said...

OMG!!

OMG!!

maxwell; OMG!! AV is going to close tutorial schools for two weeks!!

What next?? Will he now close bars and movie theatres too??

Time for another blog as a disservice to the people to let them understand that the H1N1 having been brought into Thailand by the coup makers and kept in Thailand to spread ll over the country in an attempt to divert attention away from politics by AV.

Don't forget he also was the cause of the Hambuger crises and it's his fault that he isn't personally able to remedy it after samak and somchai sta on their hands.

Time for another blog about how awful and inefficient AV is maxwell. Please we need you to show us the way in this. Give us a sermon; show us please what we need to do.

OFF WITH THEIR HEADS!!

When you say you are prohibited to contribute - do you mean that you can't get a working permit?

What kind of work would you like to engage in?

Max, 79. You ask, "How do you see life after retirement? Do you miss a regular job? Or do you have so much to do that job is replaced by other work?"

Much that I do now is "make work", keeping myself occupied, I would like to do something more useful for society. My brain still works, I am physically fitter than many and there is a limit to how much time I can devote to reading and internetting without getting bored. So life in Thailand is often frustrating, I want to contribute but am forbidden to do so, all they want is my money. I am seriously thinking about moving somewhere where I can do something useful for society.

noonin,
I have seen both sides of the hospital system here in LOS. The country hospital in Nongkai was old and not very well equipped, but the staff did the best they could and were caring. Here in Bangkok, I have also seen both sides. The govt hospital, again was older and less equipped, but had the same results. The plusher hospitals offer juice and water in the waiting areas, thier facilities and equipment state of the art and the care is quite adequate. Much of the attention is superficial and part of thier routine. Was misdiagnosed as a nerve problem, when I actually have a torn rotator cuff. Can't say whether the govt hospital would have diagnosed same, but my point is in agreement with yours that most do care, even though the pay-for-care hospitals have a different motivation

I hope this is not off blog.
This afternoon I took my son to hospital , he had a high temperature and a bronchial cough.
He suffers from bronchitis often, a result of being prematurely born.
The hospital was inundated, hundreds of sniffling coughing children.
The hospital had obviously called in all staff and doctors and did a superb job of dealing with the influx of patients.
I have clear instructions from my sons' physician, that when he has an attack of bronchitis to get him checked immediately.

Well not to carry on with this true story:
The doctors were there, the nurses were there, and all were under intense pressure and risking infection.
Were they working for money?
It was private hospital making a "killing", but the staff will not receive the bonanza and do not seek it.
Just a thought.

It is necessary to distinguish between paid and unpaid work.
You refer to work as being an activity with monetary reward.
Many people work for other reasons.

Ian: everything has a price - right? So does retiring in Thailand.

Work can mean many things - I like to see it as energy required to accomplish something that requires an effort and that is not only rooted in pure entertainment.

How do you see life after retirement? Do you miss a regular job? Or do you have so much to do that job is replaced by other work?

Productivity declines quickly if working hours are too long. Especially, if work is less the performing type but creative in nature.

We all surely need a break from the economic stress put on many businesses. But I doubt that the government can or even intedns to boost productivity by a 5 days holiday.

What we really need from them is stopping the nonsense and starting to fix the mess on their side so that the economy can recover and people can get a relief from the current crisis and don't have to worry about their jobs when on forced government vacation.

Well now, I started work at 17 and retired at 55, that is 38 working years. Actually perhaps nearer 35 years as I spent several years bumming around.
I have now been on holiday for 18 years and counting
So spread over my working life that would be 188 days holiday every year, now that is how life should be organised

Mr. Max - While it is true that paid (and unpaid) holidays come at the expense of productivity, there has to be a balance between work and play. You could work people 7 days a week but productivity would suffer as job performance would decline. You could possibly get a higher gross productivity, but per hour or unit, you would see this decline. What is the right balance between work and "play". I don't think anyone knows. I know some Thai people that have to work 6 days a week. I think that's too much but that's me. I wish that American companies gave a month off each year like they do (as I have been told) in Europe, but they don't. You just have to go with the flow and work with the reality you have. I know that's not much of an answer, but as I stated above, I don't think there IS an answer.

notdisappointed date : 07/07/2009 time : 21.06

maxwell, getting back to that new blog I recommended about the “school of life”. Let me provide you some insights for your consideration and hopefully your eventual understanding.

maxwell, it seems to me that you didn’t get that much out of your “school of life” experience. Sadly for you, being stuck in your words, “fortress of solitude”, has left you detached from the world around you. You’ve begun to think that your thoughts and views are wisdom for the masses.

“Everybody experiences far more than he understands”, said philosopher Marshall Mcluhan. “Yet it’s the experience, rather then the understanding, that influences behavior.” We are inundated daily by a flood of raw perceptions, sensations, and feelings, ands only a fraction of it can be or will be comprehensible.

So as journalist Sydney J. Harris says; “The whole purpose of education is to trun mirrors into windows.” In this view, life experiences should also turn mirrors into windows. How does this relate to you maxwell? Well maxwell, to take full advantage of this, all you have to do is cultivate a hungry curiousity for fresh teachings and life lessons – especially those that shift you away rfom gazing at your own reflection and toward peering out at the mysteries of the world.

Your job is to merely marvel at the novelty that’s flowing in, not to be in ananxious hurry to define it. It must be difficult being you, right? Always the first with an opinion or an epiphany of the world around you. It must be tough for you and your family and friends.

Because of my empathy for your situation I unselfishly try to open your eys; but you have been very stubborn and set in your ways.
comment 73
notdisappointed date : 07/07/2009 time : 18.59

Yes maxwell let's move on to a new blog: how about one which you describe to us what you've learned from the 'school of life'. What can we mere mortals learn from your experience.

If you deign to favor us with such a blog that is apolitical with no mention of AV, coup, doomsday, 'whores' and the like; it will show to all that you are not fixated and politically frustrated dilletante filled with one-sided angst.

)Oh, I still can't find those figures you keep alluding to.)

notdisappointed date : 07/07/2009 time : 18.55

maxwell then it's time for you to give a sermon on how this 'forced vacation of yours is "causing billions of Baht of damage to the economy and billions of baht of cost for the tax payer deserve close scrutiny."

No you are not raising public awareness you are just fanning the flames with you demagogery and rethoric.

You don't believe your mounting sermons on doomsday but the fact is, your 13 blogs to-date this year has done nothing but light a fire of dissent and screeched out in your drama-queen fashion that Thailand is going to hell and only maxwell can lead them out of it.

maxwell you are like a demagogue, you are full of . . .
rethoric and angst that needs a focus. From on high riding your high horse, Your blogs are (subliminally) verbally violent in their nature; denigrating and putting down anything and anyone that has anything that is coup related or even seemingly to do so. Your ‘doomsday’ sermons are so negative in content and frivolous in the truth; because you consider your opinions are the truths. The nodding acceptance by your fans, make you more and more . . . irrational.

This blog is a good example of your need to attack anything that is done by, in your opinion the military’s puppet government. You think that anything you write will be unanimously accepted and taken as the truth as given by ‘max’! But you’ve begun to lose any semblance of rationality and logic. Your cry of wolf in this matter makes you look like a petulant screaming dilettante or diva who hasn’t had her nails manicured or hair done to perfection.

This ‘drama-queen’ blog really does not do you any justice maxwell. You carried off your pretense of rationality and reason in defending democracy and justice, just went down the tubes, with this frivolus attack on AV for forcing Thais to take holiday.

C60 & For Expresso and ND: 'A Parliament of Whores' is my comment to most career politicians of the old guard which change their allegiance just like a normal person would change their underwear.

I am NOT making any distinction between Democrats or Puea Thai or any of the other parties - it is a mindset that I am criticizing. People with nothing but opportunist ideals do not make good leadership. MPs that change their opinion based on profit are not healthy for the society.

In the category of people in parliament house I mentioned above there are people of all parties from Chalerm to Chidchob the older and from Suthep all over to Sanan.

In this list Abhisit is no exception. He doesn't stand out as the best of the worst and doesn't lead the list of the worst of the bad. He is just the average gray and shady politician with a more telegenic face.

If that pisses anyone off - well so be it.

Having said the above - there might be an occasional so-so / OK person in parliament - but what you do with one good guy surrounded by 20 bad guys? And even people with good aspirations will in 99% of all cases turn into converts that play to the very same tune the other play - just to stay in the game or out of frustration or maybe just to use it for their other enterprises.

Alien: you know my employees wanted to swap tomorrow against last Saturday. I think they are happy to have a job that is well paid and like to keep it that way - not see the business going bankrupt and then have all the vacation AV likes them to have with no money. It's like this: in a time like this everyone is working extra to sail out the storm.

ND: last words - I have given you my opinion on the petition clearly in the other blog. So read it and stop flooding.

As for the rest of nonsense - you make it clear that you do not understand the cost of public holidays to the tax payer nor the legal implications of doing so. Here's a suggestion: maybe you educate yourself in economics 101 first before commenting like in C45

It's sad to see people criticise populist policy making that do not understand what a populist policy is and wouldn't recognize one when they see it. But then again it displays graphically to any educated person what the deficit (especially in logic and analysis, humanist values and history as well as maths and science) in the Thai education system has done to our value system.

I think ND has made a good example by bringing forth all that he has to offer in a desperate and - at times obsessive - attempt to 'win' a debate even though equipped with no facts and no proofs. When shown the BoT numbers he quickly changed the subject to the petition for Thaksin's amnesty and he for sure will change it again if he sees he can't 'win' on that one.

For foreigners this shows how 'competitive thinking' taught in our schools has led to a severe misconstruction of our value system. A system that today is driving people away from about anything that makes a society strong and united.

It is here that the root problem of our society lies. We need not look for any cults or populists - they just capitalize on today's Thai thinking which states that even your neighbor is your competitor and as such should never receive correct information that might help him to become stronger or more clever than you are.

It is an astounding finding.

How did it come to this? Well this is worth another blog by itself. Was is sudden affluence in a growing economy such as in the 80ies and first half of the 90ies? A bought education as substitute maybe for parently love and value transferral?

Anyway you might excuse me for being a bit harsher with off topic flooding in the future...

ND, just a general observation but I have noticed that you keep returning to this petition, even in blogs like this which are nothing to do with the petition. In fact you seem to be clearly stating that any Thai who does not condemn this petition is unloyal to King and country.
The petition seems to have become a compulsive obsession with you, or perhaps paronoia.
Now I respect you as being the most logical and intelligent supporter of the Abhasit government in these blogs, so to see you in such a paranoid state over this petition must mean it has you really worried.
I find this strange, at best it is just a ploy, something to keep the media happy nothing more.
I have said more elsewhere, no need to repeat it here again.

"Thaksin Trio style pizza", yeah I've heard of it. That's become famous by the crook of the same name. What you do is take out the tomato sauce, cheese, and whatever toppings and let the owner eat it. Then you put shit on instead to give to your customers.

Sorry br, not my style; but I heard that the reds eat it up! Hope you have some success with your restaurant though. Maybe you can do 'take-outs for when the reds have thier next howling.

I'm a steak and potatoes kind of guy. Faneuil Hall's Durgin Park steaks are to die for. There's a steak house in Brooklyn that also has great steaks, I can't remember the name though.

the author-- a country on (forced vacation)...

whatever u call it who cares????

it all started when gen.chatichai choonhavan was pm during 1988-1991, he introduced the programme as "family reunion day" on songkran's day 13/14/15apr every year, it happened to fall on sat/sun day so the government extended the holiday up to a week just for rual folks to go home and reunion.....all governments after gen. chatichai choonhavan followed suit such as chuan/banharn/chaovalit/thaksin/surayud..........

but the most disgraced, uglist extension of holidays should be on the year of his rachada land deal, normally yearend 31st dec is a public holiday, but he swopped it with 02jan flwg yr is a holiday, just to facilitate all his 772millions bht land deal documents tobe finised on time before yrend to avoid land-tax increase on flowg yr. potjaman saved quite a few millions bht. hahahaha......

maxwell, the ancient Greek philosopher Pythagoras taught that mathematics provides the ultimate truth about reality. Hi career went through a rough patch when one of his students found that the square root of two is an “irrational” number that can’t be expressed as a simple fact. His system was built on the axiom that there are no such numbers. Yet he couldn’t refute the student. By some accounts, Pythagoras had the student drowned for his impunity.

Maxwell, you have the opportunity to do what Pythagoras couldn’t: accept the evidence that your beliefs about reality are limited, and incorporate the new data into a revised worldview. Most importantly, do whatever it takes to deflect the propaganda and slip past the symbolic gestures so that you can penetrate to the core of the real truths that you try so hard to understand but fail to do so time and again.

maxwell wasn't that on another of your one-sided blogs. Are you getting confused in your frustration?

Relax and settle down thake a deep breath; this is the 13th blog of yours, attacking this government in seven(7) months. Last year you couldn't bring yourself to make any attacks against the thaksin nominee governments. You made how many? Was that six (6) wimpy flaccid attacks that reverted to attacks on PAD and military/elite?

BUT and still, maxwell, you still haven't answered my questions to you. The more you waffle and twist the more you true colors show. An elite who doesn't want to be elitist but wants to be an arm-chair rebel with your one-side angst.

Com'ere, cry on my shoulder for the lost to democracy from the coup and by the elite/sakdinar.

Well maxwell; what's your answer. I know I'm putting some pressure on you to not tell a overt lie and that you're trying damn hard to avoid a white lie but whatever you say after this and after I've badgered you for how many days now? 2 or 3 days questioning as to where your loyalties lie.

You have to understand, from now on, any answer you make, is susceptible to instant lack of credibility since it came from my coercion.

ND: accepting the truth is hard right? I think you just can't accept that while we come with statistics form the BoT and obvious facts such as governmental dementia, you still have to resort to personal attacks and hearsay like 'my friend said Thaksin borrowed a trillion baht' blah blah.

This holiday - a fact. The situation - a clear thing. Everything from the coup to the 30% rule - history no one can deny - we were all there.

So you simply ran out of arguments and proved yourself a blog troll - so what. The silver hammer thing again - go scare some teens or grow up or ask for a better salary.

Anyway, I admire your knowledge and thanks for your explanation.

About Thaksin & Buddhism, I don't know about the detail of his "gateway to buddhism" policy. I just mentioned to show you he didn't totally disregard Buddhism as you understand.

Yes, the Dalai Lama visit Thailand once long ago. He mentioned it in his book, Freedom in Exile. He said he was surprised Thai people treated monks so different from people in Tibet.

As for Santi-Asok, I think only PAD is their big fan. The sect is widely criticized by Thai Buddhists. I dont' pay attention to this too as I am raised as a Christian.

Looks like both pj and his buddy Maxwell are on vacation. Vacation from the truth that is. They can only work off of each other and build up each’s distortions and propaganda however thay are afraid to show where their loyalties really lie. No longer on vacation pj? Hiding behind Ian to avoid answering? Your sage, Maxwell hides behind twisiting and spinning plus a little waffling. But you both, in your own ways, still avoid answering simple questions. You’re able to be so forceful in your comments about witch-hunts and LM laws but fall curiously silent about something that could be distressful for HMK.

So what is it boys? You’ve had your shot disparaging the LM law and dishing the AV government; and the military. Put your mouth where your ideals sould be, into a question that you’ve avoided answering; What’re your views concerning this petition for amnesty for thaksin; and is it a proper course of action as it goes against protocol and procedure? Educated and not susceptible to lies and manipulation your answers will show to us where your loyalties lie.

All of your attention is why has this government allowed an extra day as holiday. All pj can think of after one week of the reds attempt to force a petition is: "Can they just set up a holiday without passing the congress approval?" By the way it's a holiday for government workers; of course you wouldn't know that since you're on vacation. All you know is

It's the Coup!!

Haha,
Thaksin tried to reform the supreme patriachal council of Thai Teravada buddhism and the whole priesthood but faced immense resistance.
(A Thai may expand some imagination that the supreme patriach sits on altar while the monarch bows to him).

"Gateway to Buddhism" is another laughing stuff Thaksin blew. No Mahayanan including Thai branch, Santi Asoke approved it.
This year, Global Mahayanan Congregation was held rather at surprising place, L.A.
Mahayanan monks do not come to Thailand as well as Mantrayanans, say, Tibetan Raman buddhism.
Dalai Rama ever visited in Thailand ?

Santi Asoke sectarian is a mahayanan and a branch of PAD alliance.

That is why the DAAD pulled Teravadan abbots to have a seat in their demo site always. Or they use temple complex as demo site. This is wrong.

c7, Alien,
While catholic Lent is to refrain from meat food 40 days before the Easter, buddhistic Lent is 3 months.
The first day is called in Thai 'Kao Pansa' - Kao means 'Enter'. So 'Eok Pansa', Lent-Out day is the last day of Lent. Both days are celebrative in Thailand.
(Catholics call for 3 days Lent in a year and the lent place has been built in suburb of Bangkok - Phuttamonthorn. Thai catholics use this hotel-like complex).

C6, Max,
It is what Teravada buddhistic society neglects. They try to indoctrinate Tripitika more while neglecting performance in society. Krajog's blog explains well. This is the difference from christian, confucious and Mahayanan societies.

c1, Mr. Ian

Abhisith said long weekend would help curbing the spread of flu.

Don't ask me ..I don't understand his logic.

c4, Mr. WCH

"I never heard, Thaksin and other politicians were retreated into temple for their lents."

You know one of Thaksin's policy is to make Thailand as 'Gateway to Buddhism'.

I learnt this from leading foreign media (not sure, Times?) at the very beginning of the coup. The magazine tried to analize the situation and wrote about Thaksin's policies...all his mega projects which are in-line with the Chinese.

I remember this well because I was impressed that he didn't interested in only mega projects and material things but Buddhism and Education too.

Anyway, I, myself, are not very impressed with religious person. From my experience many of them thought they're right and good because they're religious. These people are usually very stubborn and have this 'Holier, than thou' attitude.

Yes shopping and traveling will do its good in spreading the virus everywhere . If this isn't proof that the PM seriously flunked highschool and was send to England by his parents to get a degree abroad in an administrative discipline because he would never stand a semester as doctor or engineer or scientist.

Politics is full of people with alibi degrees and no real qualification. This explains also why the quality of policy making is so low.

AV is a good talker for people that put style over content. But anyone with some capacity clearly dismantles this as disguise of a whole lot of a knowledge deficit. AV is neat but that's all to it.

WCH - I am, of course, familiar with "Lent" as it applies to the Catholic religion. Please explain a little bit on the "Lent-in Day" and what does one do to get a 3 month "lent certificate". Does it have something to do with living in a temple? Self-sacrifice?

WCH: I usually avoid crowded days at temples when scores of people go for an alibi worship. Too much festival and too much noise - not an ideal environment for meditation.

I prefer some temples in the forest or on a lonesome mountain - far away in the remote country side. No big parties and mega tambun. No 'Ngan Wat'. No shaking sticks for horoscopes, no lottery tips, no donation chasing for the biggest largest golden temple roof yet seen on earth.

When the big frenzy is over I will go to visit temples that do not even have a proper roof or money yet to paint the walls.

Personally, I feel best when going to the orphanage in a close by district or the school for the deaf and mute. You will see there a lot of love from children our nice and caring merit making Buddhist society have discarded and put far behind the golden temples and huge Buddha statues on their list of donations.

This morning I saw no one to 'kao paansa' to my village temple. What is this ?.

I never heard, Thaksin and other politicians were retreated into temple for their lents.
Thailand can revise the constitution, Anyone MP being admitted to the parliament must stay at least 3 months lent and get the lent certificate from WCH or failed MP is dismissed and by-election goes.
