favorite browsers...

i'm still testing browsers to use for nation-blogging. this one is done in maxthon. let's see...

* * *

to keep up with the topic. i'm using win7. so i can only speak for ms-based browsers.

1) opera

imho, it's the fastest while starting. it's fast in handling. i like the interface-design. it lacks plug-ins... & i "need" some firefox-plugins for ease of research, online bookmarking, etc. nonetheless, i really like opera.

for reasons i'm not sure i cannot use it for editing on "the nation". let's see...

here's a cut & paste. ok, that works in maxthon :-)

quote:

Welcome to Discover Opera

Opera is the only browser that comes with everything you need to be productive, safe and speedy online. Learn everything Opera can do for you... Discover Opera!

http://www.opera.com/discover/browser/

2) maxthon

maxthon won a couple of web-awards. & though it's a massive hit in the biggest cyber-country on earth - china - it's not that known elsewhere.

maxthon is just great na! it's interface-design differs from other browsers... so it requires some usage adjustment. it comes with some more than valuable privacy & security tools.

it seems there are useful plug-ins available - though most of them come "chinese"... i can't judge it. it more or less comes with facebook-integration.

maxthon is fast! if there'd be plug-ins for the tasks i need to do online... i'd switch to it immediately from... -> firefox [just a moment]

& it seems i can use it for nation-blogging :-) [but it seems... only for basic stuff]

here's blurb from maxthon:

Maxthon Browser is a powerful tabbed browser built for all users. Besides basic browsing functionality, Maxthon Browser provides a rich set of features to improve your surfing experience.

Have a look at the Awards we received

(i wonder if it actually copies urls...)

3) firefox

yesterday firefox 3.5 had been released. i'm glad... i was seriously considering to switch to ie8 or safari. yes, it's faster. there have been some technical improvements --- but it's too early for me to judge it. some plug-ins that worked before don't work any longer --- but i could find alternatives.

quote:

Browse in the Fast Lane

Upgrade to the speediest, safest and most advanced Firefox yet.

* * *

list closed :-) it's 3 browsers already... when one would assume & expect that just _ONE_ would be fine for everything, chai mai ;-) ?

i tried safari & yes it's slick & cool. but no, i just have to say... i don't need it.

i tried ie8 & though, yes, it's much better than before & yes, i guess there are reasons to use it --- i would just prefer if i could do without. nonetheless i keep it installed.

there are a couple of other browsers. & maybe we'll see more "specialized" ones. so this is not a real review na. more or less i'm just trying to figure out how to use nation-blog na ;-)

thx 4 ur time :-)

Murphy's Law: Is a Firefox 3.5 Really That Fast?

Happy day-after-Firefox-release day. If you're one of the 3.2 million Americans to download the latest release of the browser as of this column's writing, congratulations. You, like your peers, have recognized the value of upgrading to faster and better technology products! If that sounds weird, that's the point. It should. According to Net Applications, around twenty percent of users (out of a survey sample of around 160 million people) still use an older version of a Web browser, be it Internet Explorer 6, Firefox 2, or either Safari 3.1 or 3.2. You are not among them; I salute thee.

You've probably read a lot of marketing in the last 24 hours about how fast, awesome, and packed-full of features the new Firefox 3.5 release is. Since you've had a chance to play with the release candidate of this latest upgrade starting in early June, this shouldn't come as much of a surprise. But let's cut through the press release and examine the real facts: Just how much faster is Firefox 3.5 over its browser brethren? Has Mozilla's newest TraceMonkey JavaScript engine delivered a princess or a barrel?

A funny thing to happened to Firefox on the way to vanquishing Internet Explorer: the Mozilla browser's success opened the door for a host of its other competitors.

Even as Internet Explorer's market share has slipped--down a dramatic 8 percentage points to 65.5 percent in about the last year--Firefox programmers face a surprising question: should they be more worried about the programmers in Redmond, Wash., or about those working on Apple's Safari, Google's Chrome, and Opera?

Yahoo has released a test version of a Delicious social bookmarking extension for Chrome, one of the strongest indications so far that the technology foundation is coming to fruition in Google's browser.

Extensions still must be specifically enabled through a command-line switch on the developer version of Chrome, and Google recently broke extensions compatibility through an update, so the technology clearly is immature. But Google is steadily addressing the concern that its browser lacks one of Firefox's notable features--called add-ons in the Mozilla browser.

"Delicious extension (alpha version) for Google Chrome is now available," said Amit Papnai of the Delicious team in a mailing list posting Tuesday. "This is a light version of the extension and allows you to sign in and post bookmarks to your Delicious account."

@ hj, c.4:

i _disliked_ ie for many reasons. i guess a lot of these "reasons" stem from spending times with "hackers" decades ago. but i admit: i really enjoy win7 & i think ie8 is a lot better than all predecessors.

*

for speed... sure, for mere data-transmission isp is main challenge. see, i connect by mobile-phone/gprs... that shd make for 56kb, though mostly i get an average 25%. i've lived w worse ;-)

so "speed" becomes an issue. imho, ie, suffered from that general ms strategy to develop software for "EVERYTHING". let's say, in 25 years... rarely i've met somebody who "mastered" ms word to bring out its potential to its fullest.

safari, opera, maxthon come w sharp response time.

there's a lot of "add-ons" that may slow down browsing --- as i said, i'm on a mobile phone & so i can't afford the luxury that every incoming byte is checked by "pre-emptive" malware engines.

let's say... if privacy is a concern... & if one wd choose to exercise some of the available tech-solutions... even more you'd need a browser that's fast & eats little resources: cpu-power, memory.

imho, opera is best choice :-)

@ panya, c.1:

safari is great. i'd compare it more to opera than to firefox. & then i'd have to say... i prefer opera.

neither safari nor opera support plug-ins i _need_ for some online-tasks.

ie8 is neither crap, slow nor clumsy. i wd prefer if i'd be able to avoid using it... --- but for some sites... it just makes sense.

maxthon is just sth else, new & different. as it's favorite browser in china... i guess there'll be some interesting developments.

anyhow... i'm just testing what i can use posting here na :-)

I.E works well for me,couldn't be any faster.Tried Opera and it had Main Page Virous,to name but a few.I tried them all, cant see any difference.Isnt the I.S.P. the main speed regulator.Firefox is good, but T.O.T. can slow the Space Shuttle Down.

switching to Firefox
Firefox OK, but...
Firefoz & Mozilla are great web browsers, but they don't do everything IE does. That's a set back some people go through because they do not like figuring out how to tweak things to their liking or use (i.e. adding extensions, etc).

Being an academic, I use various alternatives for everything. So let me suggest you give MYIE2 a try. It does everything IE does but it gets the bads stuff RIGHT. And it's free. It has built-in pop-ip blocking, tabbed browsing, tab grouping(I use this when I read my daily news sites and I just open wired, slashdot, linuxjournal & others with a single click because they're all tabbed in a group ready for me to enjoy, Mozilla & Firefoz do this too but differently).

I've tried lots over the yearsf, admittedly not Maxthon, and for me SAFARI is the fastest, even on a PC, followed by OPERA and FIREFOX.

Internet Explorer is absolute crap, slow and clumsy.
