Sawasdee ka...Manchester (City)

Blue Moon, you saw me standing alone,
Whit
hout a dream in my heart, Without a love of my own

Blue Moon, you knew just what I was there for,
You heard me saying a prayer for
,
Someone I could really care for
…..

“Blue Moon” the theme song of Manchester City was chanted so many times from the core Man City fans to welcome the new club’s owner, Dr. Thaksin Shinawatra or Frank (as Man City fans named him). The fans sang with the high hope that they now find someone who really care for their team.

This evening, I went out with my flatmates to join the MCFC's ONE CITY event at Albert Square, Manchester City Centre. We knew about the event from Manchester Evening News, the brochure from China Town and even from our university's email.

The main mission of my international flatmates was to get the taste of free Thai food. We reached there at 6pm and found that thousands of Man City came to the event despite the lost of their team 0-1 during the Thomas Cook Trophy match against Valencia earlier afternoon.

“We lost today but it’s a good match. Overall we are satisfied with the new players’ performance. As long as we could beat Man United, it’s ok,” A Manchester City fan told me during the queuing up for Thai food.

There are five main marquees. Two of them are from the restaurants in Manchester and three are from the restaurants in London. The queuing time for each marquee is around 30-45 minutes. There are plenty of foods at each marquee and each serve different kind of foods.

To name a few (that I can remember)...The marquee from Manchester served chicken red curry, fried spicy chicken, prawn fried rice, fried noodle, fried pork with rice. The marquees from London served BBQ chickens and ducks, sticky rice with papaya salad. For fruits, they served mangos, coconuts, mangosteens, rambutans, etc., and there are many kinds of desserts.

Attendees were so far satisfied with their foods and drinks. One guy came to ask about mangosteen as he never had it before. My international flatmates said that this is the good way to promote Thailand.

The show started at 6pm. Hart, Sutthipong was the Emcee of the night. He introduced Sonya on the stage and both teamed up as the host of the night. The program began with HM King's anthem.

Sixty Thai dancers and singers were performed on the stage including Lidea, Am-Saowalak, Mai-Chareonpura. There was a British singer who featured a Frank Sinatra tribute singer.

During the middle of the performance when Hart sang Elvis Presley's "It's Now or Never", Thaksin or Frank appeared for the first time by waving his hand from the window of the building next to the stage.

The highlight of the event was when Manchester City players, the manager Sven, the owner Dr. Thaksin and the World Champion boxer and devoted City fan Ricky Hattonwere were introduced to the public. Frank and Sven gave a speech to Manchester City fans.

Frank said that he would like to sincere thank to the supporters and would like to be a part of Manchester community.

Standing next to a core Manchester City family, Dunne told me that "We are so pleased with the new owner. It’s what we really need right now,”

Not only Manchester City fans, many Thai people from other cities including London, Birmingham, Liverpool mentioned as a few came to join the event. A group of Thai people also wore "We miss Thaksin" T-Shirts.

Before the end of the event, Hart asked people to shout “Top Ten.. Top Ten… Top Ten” It’s the aim of Manchester City this season.

The event ended with "Blue Moon" and Thaksin was invited on the stage again to sing the theme song …(which I think he probably needs more time to practice).

I overhearded a couple of fans talked to each other ….

“Hey, we look on the sunny side. Now there are not many teams that can get much money and afford to buy big players. We should be better this year.”

Blue Moon, now I'm no longer alone,
I have a dream in my heart,
I have a love of my own.......

OTOP never really made it in Thailand so now Toxin has started OCOCO (actually it is presently only "One City" at Man City)in hopes that this one will catch. "One City One Crook Owner"...........

Ian is right, "If you try to take a bone from a dog, the dog will fight."

It's a pity that some Thais are obsessed with Thaksin. It's his money actually. I believe some of those critical of Thaksin's journey to ManCity are jealous of his success. But they won't accept it publicly.

Life is short, man. Think of something else, for yourself and your family.

I would like to offer another slant on this. If you look at all major world leaders over tha last few decades, one thing I have noticed is that once in power they age rapidly. Within a short while, grey hair, wrinkles, stress lines become apparent. Look at, Blair, Bush and Putin. Now look at Gorbachev, Clinton, and the ex-leaders of the 3 British parties, they all seem to rejuvenate once they step down. Perhaps Thaksin has noticed this, perhaps he is genuinely fed up with politics, if the junta would get off his back he has more than enough money to ignore politics. I think the main reason he is still semi-active politically is to defend his money. If you try to take a bone from a dog, the dog will fight. I suspect if the junta left him alone he would be happy to stay in England and run his football and business empires and to hell with Thai politics.

Great story! Seems like Thaksin is trying to come back. He is really good in image-making and his advising team is one of the smartest strategic team. FYI, Heard that the schedule of TRUE sports channels have been re-arranged. For this season, the games of BIG4 are not guaranteed but all games of Man City will be shown and they are LIVE. So the name of Franck will be heard and the T-shirt will be seen through the channels while the coup can do nothing but watching him waving and smiling on the channel.

It is interesting to note that this particular blog since its creation has had about a thousand more views than any other of the same age. If you want to write a popular blog then write about Thaksin and Manchester city:-) It seem,s these two topics are irresistable to Thai people.

ManUnited fans saluted their hero Eric Cantona with the Ouuu Ahhh! I suggest the City supporters should do the same to their new hero.

Ouuu Ahhh Thak-sin Shina-wa-tra!
Ouuu Ahhh Thak-sin Shina-wa-tra!

Come on you, Blue!

Look like a red carpet reception for the ousted Thai PM. I can understand why many Blue fans believe that Man City will sail through the top-10 chart. Once again, Frank has taugh a lesson he once taught Thais to English football fans. Money can buy everything. With his money, he produced free T-shirts that told people that the "people" miss him. How crazy the world would be if all the rich and currupted think and act alike? LOL

Man City and Portsmouth finishing bottom would make my season. Thaksin might be the folk hero now but he needs to take care. City have acquired zero players of note in pre - season and they have been severely weakened by departures. They've also lost their first and second choice 'keepers to injury. A struggle looms if they don't start appointing players soon. Eriksson wants to spend and he wants to spend soon. The feel good factor might not last too long if they don't start some serious re-building.

Has the important point been overlooked? " My international flatmates said that this is the good way to promote Thailand. ".
This is not a solitary comment, Thaksin regardless of his motives is doing far more good for the image of Thailand than the junta who so far have only tarnished that image.

From the well prepared promotion of the friendly match as you wrote, obviously, Thaksin has never lacked idea or felt tired to make himself under the spotlight. He also loves to continue his populist policy. Free bus ride, free match, free food, free concert, maybe free season tickets for the blues fans is coming soon.
It's not surprising why the fans feel nothing about his scandals in Thailand.

BTW T.P. do you get the "We miss Thaksin" T-Shirt?

Good for them. I think Thaksin already accomplished his mission. He didn't give a hoot whether Man City will reach the top ten but he will be more pleased to see his supporters show up at the stadium wearing "We want Thaksin back" which will be shown every weekend if City's match is lived on Cable sport channel here. And oh dear, I couldn't believe he really identifies himself with Frank Sinatra.
