And, Here Comes Chavalit Yongjaiyuth, the Champ
Posted by Piset , Reader : 897 , 19:16:13

How many here have seen the movie, "The Champ."

That's probably what Chavalit would bring himself into very soon.

For those unfaimiliar with this 1979 movie, here is the introduction to it.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0078950/

Perhaps for Chavalit Yongchaiyuth, the most relevant part to him is how he and the Champ end their respective career and their lives.  For Chavalit, there is one age old Chinese phrase for it, 晚节不保。(Cannot maintain his lifelong good name at his old age).

LIke Samak Sundaravej, who would have simply enjoyed his good reputation as a wise man, a popular politician, and a fearless outspoken representative of the educated Thais, until he took up the premier as a puppet for Thaksin Shinnawatra.

I just wonder what have Thaksin got for these life-long well-respected politicians to simply dump their reputations for Thaksin.  There certainly must be some reasons for it.

In that movie, a former victorious champion of boxing, decided to return to the ring after long retirement in search of glory and money only to end his second boxing career and his life being knocked out and died as a result.

I really cannot understand why people like Samak and Chavalit would choose to discard their life long good name and get involved with such a dubious figure and ruined their own good name in the process.  In comparision, I could see that Niphon Promphant has chose to keep what remain of his life, wealth, reputation and family, rather than to be hooked by the dirty politics.

Of course, allegedly, Chavalit has got a rather dominant wife, just like Thaksin's.  I wouldn't be surprised at all, if all those front shows of these two men were really directed by the wife and the ex-wife behind the scene.

I can vividly remember Chavalit Yongjaiyuth telling the Chinese officials that his wife's fortune teller told her that he would be Thai prime minister for 5 years.  Maybe, that's the reason for his return.

I have miscounted, how many years has this guy already been Thai prime minister and how many more years he need to be in order for the fortuneteller to get paid for his work.

I hope that the fortuneteller would tell Chavalit also how things would become after all those years as Thai PM, or how has his fortune changed already according to the star.

My computer fortuneteller is telling me that, Chavalit will go down the drain, just like the Champ.

While we are at this point, Chavalit is not alone in this kind of shameless sorry state of post-retirement lives for "over-the-hill" Thai officials. It is just too bad that they could not simply be a little humble and let their grandchildren has the grand parents that they could enjoy life with and be proud of.

Wch, you are right about the word 露 in 貧僧遇露. In fact, 露, that normally means fog, sauce, lotion, or spray, imply something refreshing, something that could delight a person, be it food or otherwise.

expresso,
貧僧遇露 - Since the deprived monk has tasted the sweetness....

This is indeed so poetic and carrying significance.
露 does not necessarily mean sweetness only but includes the taste of brandy and flesh.

Gen Chavalit tasted the sweet in his military career but only the salty sweat in his political career.
Now on the verge of 狗烹, lowering boiling cauldron,哈,哈,哈

Anyhow, 四面楚歌 must be changed,四面楚食.

Piset, if you really want to see, for example, Somchai in prison, better to urge the Dems to bring the tape of initial Y to the court. The ex-premier might have got involved in the case. I really don't understand this attitude of Thai politicians. They made a statement as if they had obtained a smoking-gun, but did not dare to say the real name and were hesitant to take legal actions. And Thai media became silent after they reported what the politicians said in press conferrences.

I am looking forward for some change, otherwise, thee would be no need for a man like Abhisit, if we were not going to change anything at all.

That should serve as the land mark for the new era of Thailand.

C35, Piset, I said so because Chawalit can quit anytime before the situation get worse to that point(四面楚歌), while Thaksin can't quit.

I don't think Somchai and Chawalit will be found guilty in the court. My hunch said that Pracharawart will be the one convicted if anybody finally punished. Because the crack down order itself cannot be illegal, but what should be illegal is the way the police execute it. Police using such type of teargas to crack down on the protesters is just outrageous. And the person who should take responsility of the police job is the ex-police chief.

So my common sense say that Chawalit will be finally off the hook and he knows it. The "prosecution factor" will not be the reason to force him to stay in the post. He can quit the job anytime he wants, I guess.

The way Thaksin put up waves after waves of good for nothing puppets to head his political party itself is a message to Thai people how he regarded them, farm animals at his mercy.

Make a list of the names from Chalerm, Chavalit, Samak, Somchai, Kovit Wattana, Patcharavaj, etc. all could well be the honorary member of the Thai Butchers' Asscociation.

C24, Expresso, what a realistic approach! Will the monk curse the Buddha after this?

C27, Peacefulness-san,and WCH san, thank you for the info. I visited wiki (japanese version) and it said he (項羽) might be from Myao (苗族)or Hmong tribe. It seems there are no extablished theory on the origin of 楚 people, but anyway it stimulates our romanticism on history. That famous 四面楚歌, which was sung in oneof the most dramatic scenes in Chinese history might have been a Thai song or Myao song!

An earlier culture in present jiangsu province is believed to have co-existed with its northern rival - Chi kingdoms at Yellow river delta and Santoong peninsular during Shang - Zhou period.
Chi was the federation of 7 ethnicities having arch rival at the west, incoming Han people.
Rising Han power, later named Chin or Qin kingdom subdued Jiangsu kingdom who were mainly WU ethnicity around BC 200.

From this era many of non-Han peoples from Chi and Jiangsu Wu were on diaspora into Manchu, Korea, Japan and further southward.
Teo Chiew people is believed one of them. Viet people is believed of earlier Wei people.
Hunan kingdom at Oc Eo in middle of Mekhong delta of AD 1 c is believed to be one of same diaspora streak.

This is why I often say, Teo Chiew people were (need academic study though), same people who migrated in Korean peninsula and Japan isles and started 'sudden cultural dawns ' in their histories.

The 'T'ai Kingdom' NANCHAO was existent as the southern rival to Tang dynasty around AD 700s.
The ruling class was Han people and the ruler was
Liu Mok, a descent of Han dynasty.
NANCHAO is written in Han script meaning 'Southern Kingdom' and regarded as one of Han contesters.
They contested a decisive battle with Tang and incisioned fatal blow on the enemy (200,000 Tang troop was disorganized).
Unknowing the victorious war, Liu Mok thought no hope but sent his 5 sons (believed from T'ai wives) to further southern lands. 5 sons led T'ai people and founded small principalities along Mekhong river of mid stream. They were the first pure T'ai 'muang' of Chiang Sen, Sisongpanna, Shan, Luang Prabang. Later they organized into loose federation of Nanna alliance. A streak of T'ai diaspora came down and resided in the northern garrison post of Sukhotai, and later a T'ai mercenary serviced to Lavo chieftain of the city, rebelled and founded the Sukhotai T'ai kingdom.

I think Sivawong dynasty still alive of the past Lao kingdoms might be the descendents of Liu Mok.

Yesterday, a lady at the subway book stall tried to sell me a book on former Chinese prime minister, Zhu Rongji. After taking a good look, I discovered that it was not the new book that Zhu Rongji recently authorized, but a collection of his answering of foreign journalists' questions. The real new book of former premier Zhu went out of stock within hours and I still could not find one yet.

I certainly hope that, gradually, Abhisit wiould strengthened himself into Zhu Rongji's position, and also swithch from Democrat to New Politic Party.

Abhisit has no future with that grand old dirty and good for nothing democrat party.

Before heading out for dinner, I thought I would post this rudimentary poem. Here it is:

貧僧遇露 不存顏面
髒巷索源 無源難眠

回寺謝佛 寺狗伏園
念佛途中 惡狗喫完

貧僧遇露 - Since the deprived monk has tasted the sweetness
不存顏面 - There're no more dignity and face left in him
髒巷索源 - He searches and demands for alms and freebies in filthy allys
無源難眠 - Cos it's difficult for him to fall asleep without alms and freebies
回寺謝佛 - He returns to the temple to thank god
寺狗伏園 - Whilst not knowing the temple dogs are hiding in ambush in the temple ground
念佛途中 - While doing the chant
惡狗喫完 - The pack of mean dogs will have eaten all the alms and freebies

哈,哈,哈
Off I go now.

If this is true and if 項羽 had beated 劉邦 as everybody expected 2000 years ago, Thai would have been the standard launguage in China. :)

What Chavalit should have done since many years ago when he was regarded at the highest in the nation among politicians and army generals was to rethreat into a quiet and respected private life, just the way former Chinese previer Zhu Longji has done. (功成身退) To rethreat into private quiet life once you have accomplish some successful mission for the nation.

Peacefulness:

I may have seen this last one before:

狡兔死,走狗烹;飞鸟尽,良弓藏;敌国破,谋臣亡

I might translate it with a little variation:

狡兔死, = The sneaky and evasive rabit is dead (caught and killed)
走狗烹;= The dog (the dog that help hunted the rabit) is cooked and become the owner's food on the table.
飞鸟尽,= All the birds were gone (hunted or escaped)
良弓藏 = the bow (of the arrow) is shelved, no longer needed;
敌国破,= the enemy country conquered
谋臣亡 = The advising strategists are dead (get rid of them to prevent any future troubles)

It all boils down to a four letter proverb, “过桥抽板”

Essentially, dismantle the bridge, once you have finish using (crossing) it, so that it will not be a threat to yourself, if it is used by your enemy to go after you.

Or, once you have cross the bridge, then those boards and woods would no longer be needed as a bridge, might as well dismantle and take out all the wood and boards.

That's how Hanxin, and Xian yu died.

Wow, didn't realize that Plaadip is also an expert in Chinese language.

For Chavalit Yongjaiyuth, the saddest part is that he has brought himself so off track from the day that he was regarded as "Kong Beng" (孔明)due to the cleverness he displayed in bringing the end to insurgency in the deep south. Another sad thing is that he is not at liberty to simply stay home and be a good drandpa to his grand children, but has to be pushed by some greed power behind him, perhaps in his own home. It would be rather pitiful for this man to have to end his life in jail amid the damning from the people.
