What Should Be Done About Students Cheating in Examinations

A teacher in China was arrested for selling some electronic gadgets designed specifically for cheating in the highly competitive university extrance exam.  She testified that she sold 29 sets of those gadgets in order to make some profits to cover her investment in the firt set which she bought for the use of her own daughter who was also sitting in for the exam that year.

The gadget with LCD display enable the user to send the content of the test question to answering center where experienced staff would stand ready to provide the solutions to those tests and send the answer back to the student.

There have been many systems of similar cheating communication systems being sold and used as reported by the local news media in China.  Those caught would face very stiff punishment.  The students might face a 2-5 years banning for the future entrance exams.

Obviously, the debates that are going on is how much punishment is suitable for the student and how to punish those making and selling these gadgets.  Also, there is always an age old question of how to deal with these examination cheaters.

I visited a historical academy near Shanghai not so long ago.  Inside was the collection and exhibits of how the 2000 years old examiniation systems in China were organized and the name of those that gained the highest honor plus their subsequent achievements, mostly as government officials.  A few rooms in that academy were filled with many many kinds of tools being used for cheatings by the candidates.  The moral from this is when something, examination in this case, would lead to great benefits.  There would be honest and dishonest people all wanting the resulting benefits from this.  The question is how the society should act so that those examinations would retain its value as the tool to identify the best or the most desirable persons for certain purpose.

In Thailand, we have had people who has literally paid a sum of money to get the drivers' licenses without getting through the normal written or driving tests.  What would happen, if these tests were for commercial airliner pilots?

Of course, there are also those who need not cheat in the exams at all, because their simply pay some universities, mostly outside the country for their degree certificates.  There are also those who simply bought the degree certificates from the certificate counterfeiting people.

Things has gotten so bad that, at job interviews, I always tell the candidates to put away all the certificates their intended to show to me.   Once, I interviewed a candidate with a CPA certificate who did even know the FIFO or LIFO costing.

So, back to the old question of this blog.

Open book test were always the hardest test I ever had to take. Imaging you actually have to
familiarize you self with the book to find the answer, then have to put in your own words the answer

The rich will bribe the teacher.
If the teacher refuses to be bribed ,"An offer will be made that cannot be refused!"

The idea of my Take Home Exam was that, when they are working, nobody is going to prevent them from using a dictionary or consulting an expert. What the boss dislike are those who would not make uses of the references materials or persons even when they are available only at arm's length.

One of the way for me to deal with unfairness from cheating is to allow cheatings.

I was a little well known during my years at the universities in Thailand for giving "Take Home Final Exams." The students are given up to 3 weeks to complete their answer and are encouraged to ask for helps from any sources that they could find. However, if identical or nearly identical answer appeared in more than one paper. Those sharing that same answers would also share the scores. That means the score of the paper would be divided by the number of people having the nearly identical or identical answers.

Also, I employ a serial matching of three to four columns of components of the test questions. For example, the students with ID ending 01 would start from element one in column on and element two in column two, element 3 in column 3 and element 4 in column 4. Then No. 11 would start from component 1 in column one element 3 in column 2 and element 4 in column 3 and element 5 in column 4.

Then, they will need to link some of their answers to the reading cards or case studies already handed in during the semester.

Needless to say, they suggest that they would prefer to sit in for 3 hours for a closed book test.

This take home exam however, was my initiation to push Thai students to make uses of outside learning resources, and to learn to do researches. Along with that, I brought them 400 kgs of professional journals from the US which were difficult to find in Thailand.

In the past I read an news article from south korea,
'wikipedia on mobile phone'. They have their own website similar to 'wikipedia' and at the initial stage of the commercial website, students -highschoolers cheated in test by 'wrist-watch like mobile phone'.
I dont know now how they prevent the cheat. I think they turn off the website during national SAT and so on, or detector machine when students enter the test room.

A recent news reported that Wikipedia wants to buy the Korean version that enables mobile phone wikipedia. 555

Alien - with your plan above, I would like to buy shares in one of the fake degree makers in Khaosarn Road.

I do actually know of a person in Bangkok who lost his driving licence in UK. Bought an EXCELLENT fake in K Road and went to the traffic office here. They looked at it and told him he didn't need to take a test, just recognise red, orange and green...though for what reason you need to recognise red here mystifies me! He had the cert of residence, medical cert, photos etc, and a Thai licence was issued for both car and motorcycle....no problem TIT.

First, they should be tied to a chair. Then, they should suffer a thousand cuts with a razor blade and then they should pour rubbing alcohol onto the cuts. After this, they should be untied from the chair and have honey poured on them. Then they should be tied down on top of a big hill of ants that bite. Fire ants would do just fine. Then, they should be thrown into a freezer, naked, for 36 hours. After the 36 hours is up, then they should take them out and "waterboard" them for 3 or 4 hours. Then, they should put them in a small room and put Barry Mantilow music on, raising the level to ear-splitting decibels. Then, back to the pool for another 3 or 4 hours of waterboarding. After this, they should be tied down and their finger nails and toe nails should be S-L-O-W-L-Y torn out. Back to the ant hill (with more honey for about 5 or 6 hours). Next they should be made to stand naked in the hot sun (at least 92 degrees farenheit) with a big sign that says "CHEATER" on it. Then all of the students and teachers that did not cheat should get in a line with clubs that have nails sticking out of them. The cheater should have to run by the line 3 or 4 times with the non-cheaters hitting them with the club. Then, they should have the cheating device inserted into their anal cavity, as far as they can push it. Finally, they should have to pay a small fine, maybe $5 or $10. I am assuming that this is their first offense. If not, we cannot be so easy on them.

I'm sure half the kids and teachers in the world cheat. They should probably just fire her. Save them alot of time from the above.
