The Really Jeen Khanom Jeen (Chinese Goodie)!

Just a random thought that arose from my taste of the Chinese Cold Noodle.  Suddenly brought my thought to the Thai Khanom Jeen which virtually means Chinese goodie.

In Thailand we used to joke about the uses of names that refer to foreigners or foreign countries for things that are realy vey "Thai" in our feeling.   For example, Kluay Kaed, means Indian Banana, but hardly any Indians can be seen selling this deep fried bananas.  Prik Thai, means Thai Chilis is actually powered pepper, is mostly sold by Chinese grocers.  Then, Khanom Jeen, means Chinese Goodies, are seldom sold by Chinese, usually sold and bought by Thais.

If you were a farang that has been in Thailand long enough, I am quite sure you might have had a taste of "Khanom Jeen-Nam Ya,"  or the likes of "Khanom Jeen" already.

Khanom Jeen is made from rice that form into round noodle-like shape and is usually curled into bundles. 

Below are the "Cool Noodles"  (liang mian) that is very popular during the hot summer days.

If the latters were made from rice rather than wheat, the color of these noodles would be exactly like Thai Khanom Jeen.

There is a difference in the way these dishes are served.  Thai version is always served with sizzling hot soup (Nam Ya), whereby Chinese version is always served cold.

This difference is the exact contrast of the tea drinking habits between Thais and Chinese.  Thais like to drink tea with plenty of ice while in China, they only wanted the hottest of hot water for the tea, supposedly to bring out the best of the taste of the tea.

This noodle is the symbol of Thai culture.
Chinese noodle string was interestingly thought as kanom - goodies.
The soup is curry soup that might have been brought by an Indian migrant, Mon people who once inhabitated central Thailand and founded the Lavo kingdom and the first half of Ayuttaya kingdom.
In Narai era of Auyttaya in mid 17 century, 'Khon Zin' has their own ghetto at the northern gate of the Ayuttaya city and they are believed to have invented this noodle.

i like khanom jeen with curry and o-lieng (iced coffee)

stop having khanom jeen with namya after i read about 'maeka' put toilet paper to thicken the namya.

khanom jeen sao-nam is yummy too. it's a very unique dish.

Khanom Jeen is really very delicious, and it was quite a few years before I was introduced to it. Not many farang I know like it very much.

I prefer the Nam Ya Gati, well spicy and fishy, with lots of extra bean sprouts. I'm not crazy about the other greenery that comes too. So delicious midday or afternoon!

My daughter loves the Khanom Jeen noodles mixed in with Som Tum, which I gather is known as Tum Sua. But that is a variation of Som Tum, rather than Khanom Jeen.

Mmm, I'm hungry now!

Once, I suddently remember about bringing some present to the customer when I was already in the departure louge. So, I grabbed a box of two cans of good looking tea and gave it to my customer in Xiamen, Fujian Province.

He bursted in to hilarious laugh upon seeing the present I brought him.

"Don't you know that Fujian is one of the biggest and most famous tea producing province in China!"

On my way back, he gave me a huge package of about 2 kgs of "Tie Guan Yin," one of the most famous tea from Fujian.
