The Last Rendezvous of A Web Romance Seeker

This story occur in late 1999 in Shanghai.  The key character in this story was a 20 years old young man freshly out of junior college.

Just like most others of this age and education in this bustling great metropolitan of China, Dean was quite at home with computers and internet, of course, including the on line chats and match making on line at that time.  Each evening his small pack of young men would gather around the computers to exchange their chats with some web friends, mostly female, supposedly.  Each seemed to have fallen into some kind of web romance quickly.

Dean met a rather socialable web "girl friend" online.  She lived in Hangzhou, the "Heaven on Earth" city about 250 km from Shanghai.  As time wears on, Dean tried to set up a meeting with his web "girl friend."   Lin, his web "girl friend" kept putting it off.  She would always counter Dean's romantic message with some stalling suggestions, such as, "Let's just be good friends, don't thik too much."

One Saturday morning, Dean told me that his "girl friend" in Hangzhou has finally agree to meet him.  So, he got up unusually early for that 3 hours trip to Hangzhou.  I had to teach him how to tie a necktie, as he has never put on a necktie in his life.

Early that evening, Dean came back from his "rendezvous."   before any of us had a chance to ask him any question, he bursted into a loud boom, "I will never chat on web again!"

When we managed to calm down the clearly disappointed Dean, he told us.  "I should have taken her hints about just being chatting friends on the web.  She is only 3 years younger than my grandma!"

That was his last Web romance for a long time that follow.  Dean would simply watch TV or play Mario game when others continue chatting on line.

Yabua, I was teasing with comment 8. In the U. S., black comedians sometimes, as part of their act, insult and make fun of white people. Then they say, ..."but not the white people here." I was kind of doing that.

I read a story before about a person, a long time ago, who was starting out as a reporter for The New York Times. He visited a country club and came back with a story about how all of the members were stupid, arrogant jerks. His editor told him to change it to "all except one of them was a stupid arrogant jerk". That way, he explained, they can't sue you for slander and all of the members would think that it the other members that were stupid arrogant jerks since no one thinks that of themselves. He agreed to the change.

Hello Yabua,

Con is short for confidence. There can be conmen or conwomen. They are people who scam you or rip you off by obtaining you confidence. It would be someone who tells you they have a great investment for you and you can make alot of $$$, but their real intention is only to seperate you from your money for their own benefit. It could also be someone who tells you they lost their bus ticket home and asks if you could help out with some cash. It apparently happens alot with the "working girls" (prostitutes) in Thailand who tell their falang customer that they need money for the family's sick buffalo or ailing mother or father. "Con" is an adjective to describe a person (conmen or conwomen) and can also be used a a verb, "He tried to con me" or "He got conned".

Hope this helps.

RE C.8
Alien, you are noble!!!
When anyone doesn´t understand me correctly, I normally say "Probably I didn´t make myself clear" or something like that too. Except with some nasty people whom I don´t want to tolerate anymore, of course.
What I wrote was unclear too. I just meant you know only one part of me, but what you have known is real.
One thing I don´t agree with you. I think in this website, we also have quite a few dangerous bloggers.

I thought always internet match-making is secondary market, as if it is 8 pm vegetable market.
In fact the retiring age of commercial venue is 30 and they resort to internet hooking then. Some, lucky can settle down in the last market, 11pm, the

Don't trust anyone over 30 seems most apt in Thailand's case. C4.Where you sprinkle nam pric is up to you.

During the late 60's, the flower children, that is the hippies said, "Don't trust anyone over 30!."

During the height of the clamping down of the pyramid sales schemes in China, each housing communicties would put up posters, "Prevent Fire, Thieves and Pyramid Sales."

Now, that similar warning statement might go like this,

"Don't trust anythng or any one on internet or mobile phone sms."

All of the internet is fertile ground for all kinds of thieves, liars and con-men. It goes without saying not to trust anything you see on the internet. While I write this, the right-hand side of my screen has an ad stating "Asian Girls for Love and Marriage." It has pictures of asian girls to entice the viewer. In my opinio, anyone who clicks on this ad thinking they will really get an Asian girl for love or marriage is a real idiot. But again, you can't protect people from themselves.

Piset, I agree wih you. In my tiny town, the adult school´s computer courses are always fully booked and computer books aimed to teach senior selflearners are bestsellers.
Look, from reading my blog, GG, my dear sunny boy even asked DS, who knows me in person, if I was hot.

Well, the guy was a little over-confidence of his knowledge of the syber world. In those early days, especially in China, not many people ove 35 used computers. Much less using internet or internet chatting.

Now, you will find 30-40 grandmas and grandpas filling up the computer classrooms, learning the systems so that they can chat with their grand children in the US, Candada, Australia or Europe.

In the late 80's, when I announced that my school has entered the computer era by offering CAI, computer assisted instruction in math and English, it invoked anger from our competing neighboring school so much that their teacher led their students to harrass our student leaving for home after school.

I don't think 'the woman by 3 younger than his grandmother' was the real chat partner, but the real grandmother of the girl.

China is still in conservative society and it would not be regarded to meet a misterious 'city youth'.

A man via chat would be refused as it is improper way to meet one another. This kind of culture is in fact the power to refine a society.

In a corner, in a small internet shop in central Bangkok the morning hours in the shop are busy but by different customers, almost naked girls, third type shemales, who fail to hide their profession or another group of people, foreigners, western faces are more prominent though,
both group of people are quickly founding a site, chat through video, and close deal quickly,,,
where a man or a girl stay, how to meet,,, and
they quickly disappered.
Some of them aren't bothered for logging but just meet in shop and walk straight to nearby nest.

This, morning business hours is flourish in Thailand.

Shanghai-Hangzou chatting is still naive. 555 but romantic,,,
