From the Nation today:

Thai PM arrives Malaysia on an official visit Monday

Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva arrived Kuala Lumpur on Monday for an one-day official visit to....

I have heard something like, "arrive here, arrive there, but not 'arrive Malaysia', or 'arrive Kuala Lumpur'. . . .

Please correct me, if I were wrong.  Otherwise, please advice the nation's editorial staff what should be corrected.

Haha:

For about 9 years from 1991 till 1999, I served a number of Thai companies as their operating chief in China. The phrase 山高皇帝远 was repeated to me n times by both the locals and the Thai colleagues.

It is true as happyjack said, if ethical standard is the same, then the distance shouldn't matter. However, in rality, the distance does impact upon the amount and accuracy of communication. As you said, those A-s-s kissers around the HQ certainly have different sets of ethical standards.

Nevertheless, the meaning of this phrase means both the reduced influence of the CEO and the opportunities for those at the remote aras to be "automonous" to cetain degree, officially or not.

#43 happyjack, I don’t understand what you mean. Why did you have to be sarcastic?

I am just interested in old Chinese saying mr. expresso mentioned in #26.

Then mr. piset and mr. peacefulness explained the meaning which were slightly different in my opinion.

The first - you’re likely to get no help from the emperor.

The second – you can abused your power because the emperor would not know.

The third - I added it myself because it’s also the case that little civil servants in remote area are likely to be forgotten. I had read that that people who fell out of favour would be sent from Peking to remote place like Yunan to be forgotten.

So I just doubted what is the real meaning that’s all.

Now from mr. expresso #41, 42. I understand it covers anything good or bad. It just means the Emperor is faraway you can do anything you want. Am I right?

So what does 山高皇帝遠 really mean?

- c33, big bosses at the capital or at the company's headquarters can hardly be responsive or helpful on local issues., or

- c37, meaning, a remote area where law enforcement is hardly reached, so one can do what he prefers.... or

… the big boss is too far to notice what good you have done.

In Thailand people believe in the last one. The guys who hang around licking his boss boots always got promoted while those who really work hard in remote are forgotten.

山高皇帝遠 is a frequently used expression meaning those big bosses at the capital or at the company's headquarters can hardly be responsive or helpful on local issues.

Essentially, it means those with the highest authority are frequently too far away and/or too busy to look after everything.

This is precisely the prime cause of failure when people from small countries or small economy attempted to rely on the support of those big big bosses in their investments or problems in a large country such as China.

During the early years of opening up, many Thai-Chinese who followed the prime minister's entourage into Beijing and had exchange tosses and name cards with some of the top men in Chinese government, thought that they can have the "all convenient gree pass" for everything that they wanted to do in China, just as the way they do businesses in small countries, such as, Thailand, Burma or Laos. When problems arose and/or conflicts developed between them and those local interests, such as, the case of Sino-Thai's case in Shenzhen, they found that those in the central government simply are too busy with other things and too far remove from being able to help with their local problems.

Most of the area in Cina except for those few plains along the Yangze River Delta or Mongolia features rugged mountainous terrains and desserts. Thus, the word "mountain is high" really mean the accessibility of those top authoirities are difficult. the word "the emperor is far away" really means the emperors' physical location and attention is too far removed from paying attention to those local issues.

There are axioms used by people from different countries. Some axioms contain special meanings only the native-speakers can fully comprehend.

I remember my ex-boss cum friend in HK, a Chinese American, once wrote to me 山高皇帝遠. Apparently, he couldn't find better words in English to say what he had wanted to say (we communicated in English all the time).

To the English speakers, 山高皇帝遠, when translated literally, means: Tall mountain, and the king is far away. Chinese and those who study Chinese know what it means. But how others interpret it could be interesting.

Very true, would we address each other with vulgarities if sitting around a table.
Yesterday I did get annoyed when things were written that had no place in a civilized discussion.
Then I too became impolite on Piset's blog as the crudeness continued.
I do try to abide by the rules of good manners. Swearing and sexual innuendo are not acceptable to me.

Example:
He's Up the creek . Any listener would insert the words without a paddle.

Here is an interesting one from today:

"Anupong dismissed reports that the army would not retaliate but would continue using peaceful measures to try to win back the heart and mind of local people in the efforts to restore peace."

By using the words "dismissed" and "not", it means the army WILL retaliate and use aggressive methods.

Perhaps a Freudian slip?

Noonin, words evolve, common couplets start off unhyphenated, then become hyphenated, finally become conjoined. But there are no solid rules, proof reader, proof-reader, proofreader are all acceptable, Google is not an authority on the English language, neither is the Oxford English Dictionary. They are for guidance purposes only.

Ok, I'll do my best in my homework. Here it goes on my assignment:

Noonin, would proofread or proof-read be an acceptable word(formerly) to be used in the context that you have used?

-------------------------------

Still mistakes?

Well, there's no chance for me ever becoming a teacher.

Incidentally, my brother-in-law is the boss of an international school. He speaks such terrible English as compared to me, but he hires teachers with a minimum salary of USD2,000 a month. I am tempted to become an employ but I never like to teach for a salary.
