Last year, the nation'b blog served as the avenue for the troubled foreign exchange students in the US to0 find helps.  Now, it help us reaching more concerned citizen of the US on this subject.  here is a copy of the letter.
Dear Piset:

I just received a call from a lovely woman here in the US concerned about the way in which a student from Brazil was removed from her home.

Before we concluded our call, I asked her how she found CSFES.  She responded that it was upon reading a very informative Blog called The Nation, and the author is Piset.

Thank you, again, so very much for helping CSFES to help exchange students.

Respectfully,

Among the names frequently mentioned in cases involving questionable management or alleged improper treatment of the foreign exchange students in the CSFES are the International Student Exchange Corporationg and the INTO Edventure under it, under the umbrella name of the Student Management Group or SMG, the YES/ASSE,EF Foundation, AISE, etc. In any case of doubt, please refer to the website of the csfes.org for more information.

While the above mentioned name had frequently been mentioned, I would encourage further confirmation to more details before making a decision whether or not to let your children go on the student exchange program managed by these companies and organizations.

What I could confirm from spending a quarter of my youthful years in the US is that not all Americal are like George W. Bush Jr., Al Capone, or Marilyn Monroe.

Since it is a wide open country that welcome any comer for nearly two centuries before the immigration rules were tighten up, it has all kinds of people. This is what makes American interesting.

I have had over 7 happy years in the US meeting many many very nice people in the US. It is just shocking to see the great program of student exchange being used by those "human cargo" traders faking the approval of the Department of State.

I learned about the name AFS when my sister sat is for a test for it in her high school year. She forfeited because my dad did not agree to let her go to the US.

Then I discovered that one of my classmates was one of the happiest returnees of the AFS, Mr. Sanan Ang-Ubonkul of Srithai Superware.

I tried myself and failed because at the time my English was only so so comparing to those from the Catholic Senior High Schools. I finished only Mor 3 at that Catholic School before leaving for the Bangkok Commercial School after passing Mor 6 from the Equivalent Test of the Adult Education System, so my English level then was insufficient to earn a seat for the student exchange program. However, I have always been impressed by these great programs.

Hi PASA Ninja:

Good things never come easily. This should be the basic rules for all the parents and the students wanting to go for further studying in the west.

40 years ago, in 1966, while I was in the US, my friends asked me whether it was a good to go to the US for studying. Here was my answer then,

"If you are a hard worker with strong will and intention to meet with any difficulties, then the US is for you. The US education can add wings for you if you are a tiger. However, if you want to avoid hardship and prefer easy life, the US will be both costly, no fun and suffering for you."

Keep walking forward. Don't give up. Don't fed up.

You raised many points of good and bad of going abroad under the program. I think students mostly don’t want to contact the organization or in other word, they wish there aren’t any problems occur when they are abroad. Piset, you know, I was interested in Student internship the program but later quitted it as I think nothing guaranteed my life there, USA. I have read many of article and blogs of people back from abroad. Then I feel going abroad under those program is just like buying some lotteries which have to rely on luck!! BTW, your blogs inform me so many benefits inform. thanks

To the students' parents:

1) If your child is a top student, try the reputable student exchange organization with long history of good reputation and without any records of problems. For example, the American Field Services (AFS) is one of the best one. Do not accept any imitated organization.

You can check on the website of the Committee for Safety of Foreign Exchange Students about the companies that have had cases of irresponsible handling of the students.

2) If your student is not a top student, then go to the US embassy yourself to ask about the ways to send your child to the US for continuing studying. Whatever any agencies can do for you in getting a visa or admission to a school or university, you can do it yourself, at a much lower cost.

None of the agencies has any special rights from the American government to bring in any unqualified students.

If your child is still not strong enough, give him/her more preparation time, or apply for a lower class to begin with in the US. You cannot buy your way into any good school in the US, unless your child is academically strong enough.

I like the student exchange program for it has brought not only education but also mutual understanding between Thais and Americans plus an irreplaceble happy experience for the youngsters from Thailand most of whom would never have any chance of seeing the US without the exchange programs.

This is why I have vowed to support Danielle's effort to weed out those bad operators and the opportunists who have been causing severe damages to the program and severe suffering to the students.

Our efforts will continue until the last of those bad operators is either put in jail or put out of business.
