A powerful person I met: Schumi

I was not a Formula1 fan. I just know the name of Michael Schumacher and that he is a seven-time F1 champion. I felt a little excited to meet and interview a legend like him, though.

The trip to Belgium made me know why he deserves the position on a Champion’s podium and is a superstar.

He is charismatic and charming. And the most important quality is that he is fully conscious, mindful. He knows what he does in every moment, he is in the control of himself.

My trip was to join his press conference launching new anti-drink driving campaign he is the presenter.

It is called "Champions Drink Responsibly" campaign, sponsored by Bacardi Limited.

The press conference was held at the AutoWorld Museum, Brussels.

At the entrance of the event was parked a Yellow Cab. Schumacher appeared with Bacardi CEO for a photo session.

That was the first time I saw him in person. He looked very nice. He played with photographers, who came from international and national media organisations like CNN, BBC, Reuters and The Nation and The Daily Xpress. :-)

With bright smiles, he posed with the cab for them. The photo session ended with laughter.

He was presented again at a 45-minute press conference. He answered questions from the media, before going to small group interviews.

As I saw in Notting Hills movie, the superstar moved around from one small room to another to meet reporters. Each group got five to 12 minutes- sharp- for the interview and photo-taking.

Reporters from six Thai newspapers: Thai Rath, Daily News, Matichon, The Bangkok Post, Krungthep Thurakij and The Nation got eight minutes with him.

He had to answer question after questions, some similar, some different. I can imagine if it was me, I must have been furious.

But he stayed calm. He thought before speaking. Every word he said was firm. The rhythm of how he speaks was steady.

I was lucky that I got the answer to my question properly. As when he said or signaled he finished the answer to a question, I did not feel like asking again to get the answer as a good reporter always does. I know he would insist the answer.

It was like he has the power. I became really excited and nervous during the interview.

That gave me a lesson. It proved one of the most prominent principles of Buddhism: being mindful in every moment.

Of course, F1 Champions must be quick in every split of a second. Missing just one of the period might cost their lives.

But meeting him in person imprinted on my mind how powerful being a mindful person is.

The most interesting person i have met, was Bono from U2 (a hero of mine).
I and my girlfriend of the moment met him at Washington DC airport back in 1999, i recognised him and his family and approached him for an autograph, he willingly signed and scrawled a picture in my passport. Fortunately for us the baggage carousel broke down and it was announced over the tannoy that it would take 30 minutes to repair, after thanking Bono for his time and patience we went to walk away, he insisted we went over and met his family and we obliged, They (Bono and wife Ali) spoke to us as though they had known us for years and we spoke about a range of subjects, Music, concerts and our lives, he asked us what we were doing in Washington, explaining we had no plans, he asked us where we were staying, we informed him and he then asked us what we were doing 3 in 3 nights time, not sure was our reply. He asked if we would like to attend a concert he was giving, we said we'd love too.The only condition was we wore our best clothes.
3 nights later we got a call from reception that our car had arrived. Outside was a black limo and we were taken to a venue near the Whitehouse, Amoung the guests was Bill Clinton (then President), Will Smith, Maria Carey, amoungst others.
Its was one of the highlights of my life (sad i know), but it goes to show that some mega stars do care.

A sensuality is virgin, and someone has it primitive.
When two meets, they synchronize.
The unfortunate is one who lost both.

A very interesting perspective. Nigel Mansell once said that while racing he could control his emotions to such an extent that he could see the track and the crowds as if everything was moving in slow motion. Maybe lots of successful racing drivers like Schumi and Mansell are Buddhists without knowing it.

GG - Nice guy, obviously a great driver, but as you rightly say an asshole behind the wheel.
He has performed many manoeuvers during races, particulary overtaking or not allowing himself to be overtaken, that could have cost people their lives.
