Just a story of wandering Shogun

Shogun is a dog of my neighbor. He is a Bang Kaew.

Bang Kaew is notorious for its aggressiveness and owner-loving characteristic.

The neighbor raised him as if he was an emperor, not just Shogun :P, when he was a puppy. He had chances to enjoy the house's living room for most of the time. But as he grew up he enjoyed the filed more so he was too dirty to go into the living room.

Moreover, as he grew older he enjoys our neighborhood more so that he flees out of the house and wanders like a strayed dog every evening.

He is six years old now.

(Maybe freedom heart or the love of challenge is Bang Kaew’s behavior. My Bang Kaew called Kaew also tries to dig the dirt under the fence or break the fence when he’s got chances. He enjoys the mud outside the backyard and he tries to feel the air outside the house even few steps away from the house when we open the gate for cars to go out. But he knows he must come back as soon as possible.)

I many times saw Shogun climbing up the fence to get out.

If I arrive my home when he is out, he will greet me in front of my house and I will treat him with dog snacks I have in my car. He seems to care more about playing with me than the snacks.

When I visited my neighbor last week, Shogun greeted me whimpering, making the owner speak to him, "Why do you have to be that glad, Shogun?"

My neighbor said she was too tired to prevent Shogun from escaping for a trip outside.

I think Shogun is lucky enough. He’s got good food, good care and the freedom he loves.

The only thing worrying me is that if a car hits him. (He’s got a collar so I don’t think officers will arrest him. And the fact that he is a Bank Kaew could prevent others to take him to their home.)

But if I arrive home when he is in his house, my dogs will jump near the fence and bark loudly as they know Shogun is the other side.

They bark like saying "My master is back!"

In my opinion, Shogun must feel inferior. Poor Shogun!

(Am I exaggerating? :P)

This story is inspired by GGrass’ story as a comment to Catch22’s "Thai Cruelty to Animals" article.

Esamu, of course I remember meeting you. But oh ... I barely recognise you. You look much different.

Kornchanok, I have around 10 of them. So, may be Shogun1, Shogun2, Shogun3,...

Poomjai, I think what you said about "social creature" mentioning dog is quite true. I've heard from a vet that dog will lick its legs so often until its legs turn red only because it is lonely.

Poomjai, the film is Ma Ma Si Kha Krub kha.
Maybe you are right, Shogun has two friends at his house but he might prefer friends in the neighborhood to have fun with.

Some of my dogs played with Shogun when he was young. The exception is Kaew. He tries to find chances to attack Shogun. Even nowadays, Kaew waits at the gate to prevent Shogun from following me inside. Maybe he wants to be the only Bang Kaew of the house.

Weerayut, thank you kha. You are very kind.
But I'm not sure if Shogun will know the turtles are his friends. He might think they are his new toys and the new friends must be staying in their private house all the time to be safe.

Jiwamol, how will you choose a fish for the Shogun name ka? Will others feel inferior? Or you will let others be Emperor and Empress and award Shogun with the pride of being cute and nice name ka?

I have only just come to read this blog. Maybe the real story is that the actor Richard Chamberlain has possessed Shogun's body and now he thinks you are that beautiful Princess in Osaka? It's why he is so pleased to see you all the time! (You might need to ask a very old person what this reference is about!)

But seriously, I think dogs are just very social creatures, particularly if they are domesticated to live with humans, and get lonely very easily. Plus they have lots of energy which they need to burn and cannot if stuck at home all day with no one to walk and play with them. Hence his nightly wanderings. Either that or he has a secret bunch of dog friends who live in a garbage tip, like in that recent Thai 'dog' blockbuster movie? (Sorry, forgot the title.)

Why the dog named Shogun always a cute one? I miss another Shogun, you know? I would have my fish named the same now.

It sounds His Excellency Shogun needs a friend. I have 5 red-earred turtles. If he promises he won't kill any one of them, I will say dogs and turtles can be friends.

jirut3005: Shogun must feel he's inferior coz the other dogs get to live in the same house as Kornchanok, but he has to stay outside...

I was threatened once by such a dog, however it seemed to understand English. I pointed out that if it bit me I would kill it. After thinking things over it backed off:-)
