Palm Oil at Tesco

Tesco has launched campaign to decrease Palm Oleam price 37 per bottle since 22 - 25 May 2008. Actually the retail price of plam oil has ranged between 47-49.75 bahts per bottle ( 1 Liter). Yes... the waiting time for customer saves  his/her money at high cost of living.  Tesco marketing team decreases a price of product to reward customer, doesn't he? Ha Ha Ha .... the low price will encourge  customer to come and buy a bottle of plam oil ( 3 bottle of a person) during a time of buy other high price products. Win ... Win  However, there are many people usually get empty of discount product because of some customers and some cashiers distort the rule of buying (conspiracy cheat). They buy a fullfill cart of Plam Oil and separate a bill for 3 bottles. How to crazy are there? the long queue... Even though some customers give a reason, they are a cook and selling finishing foods. The discount oil will save its cost at least 10 baht. The saving of them will relief a speed rise price of finish foods that will direct benefit to customers.

In term of my opinion, the most  people like the discount price which Tesco did. But the rule of arranging  is not fair play. The final customers miss and Tesco marketing campaign miss  Lose ... Lose

I hope there will not be the sign of falling of raw palm price.

GGrass,

Makro has the best prices on potato chips and other snack foods, in semi-bulk packs. Tesco Lotus usually have some variety of soft drinks on special price every week. I just bought a box of 12x1.25 liter sized bottles of Coke @ Baht 17 per bottle today.

Do you know that Coke is very effective in cleaning out your stomach and intestines. Try immesing a heavily corroded nail in a glass of Coke overnight and see how clean it becomes in the morning.

So, if you drink Coke and tea regularly you will have stomach and intestines that are as clean as a whistle. But then, you may also have the occasional stroke and cardiac arrest. These are bonuses that come free with Coke (and Pepsi, for that matter), but they do not advertise or promote them for obvious reasons! (Hospitals subsidize them not to do so.)

For the occasional frozen foods that are "on sale" try Foodland and Tops Supermarkets.

Near my home in England are 5 large supermarkets. Each week they advertise "loss leaders", as they do this online I can plan a shopping route that takes advantage of the best offers:-)

What would I do with three bottles of palm oil?

I wish they gave discount on things like potato chips or soft drinks. Frozen food would be nice too.

Advertising and sellng a few items at very low prices by large retailers like Tesco Lotus and other hypermarkets and supermarket chains is a technique of using "loss leaders" to lure shoppers into their stores, in the hope that these same shoppers will also buy other, high-margin regular priced items from them, some of these "on impulse."

Make no mistake about it, these retailers are not going to sell any product at a loss. The gross margins on these items may be reduced, but there is still some profits to be made, because the "normal" mark-ups are between 40% to 100+% depending on product categories.

The way for consumers to play the game is to stock up on items that have been marked down as loss leaders if they are what the consumers would be using normally and regularly, making sure that these are non-perishables or have long shelf lives with extended expiration dates printed on the packaging materials.

For example, liquid soaps in regular or refill plastic pouches are often sold at reduced prices from time to time with special "buy one get one free" offers. If the soap you use regularly or an equivalent brand becomes "on sale," buy as much as you can use over a 6 to 12 month period. Then you are assured of getting these at good prices and can forget about buying the same items in the next 6 to 12 months, or until the next "sale" comes along.

Cosmetics, soaps and other personal care products usually carry big mark-ups so we almost never buy them at regular prices unless in an emegency situation.

These are my two cents for today.

Good to the seller, bad to the consumers.

Thai consumers are simple people. "Seeing is Buying" here in Thailand.

I had never seen any Thai housewives earlier made a shopping lists counting their budget before going to the retailers.

Once a thing is seen at sight and if it looks attractive, they pick. About 30% of items are ended up to their store room later.

Tesco manager may aim at this attitude of general Thai consumers.

Thai market is the most profitable to Tesco, as known well.

A clever sales expert on retail market, would measure the whole purchase of a visitor.
One item priced cheaper is indeed the bait, to call more visitors.

This trick is taught by most of business school, including Harvard.

Another trick to a large retailer like Tesco, is to hold contracted palm oil refiners. They can purchase at cheaper price from the refiner, instead Tesco guarantee regular purchase of fixed price and quantity.

Refiner can not turn off the fire of refining machinery. He will purchase palm nuts regularly from acquainted farmers.

This whole system assure the stability of trade.
This is called, the BEAUTY OF SIZE, a term of modern business management.
