The Old picture versus the New picture

The Old picture versus the New picture

You have a picture of the world, of people around you and of yourself. Those pictures are the make-up of your life.

One day you come to the conclusion you want something entirely different. You don’t want to live the life those pictures are guiding you into. You take new pictures and hold them firmly in front of you and you say to yourself – this is how it’s going to be.

Now, the new pictures have to struggle with the old pictures and the old pictures which have been in power are strong. It’s a struggle. It takes time.

But if you hold the new pictures firmly in front of you they will do their job. You don’t have to do it, they do it. Your job is holding on to them firmly and you have all reason in the world to do that as these new pictures come from your own choice. They were not, like the old pictures, put onto you from “circumstances”, “bad fate”, “poor background” or whatever.

Most often the right picture is asleep or hasn’t come into being yet and so it’s very common to have to start with the wrong picture. You start, then, most often as a prisoner of your past.

FelixQui, My criticism of Cognitive Science rests on the fact that or Mind works with pictures and not with words. At the very basis there is the Mind and there are pictures. When we were born we entered this world with a Mind. We were not born with a language. But we were born with pictures, right? Already from the start we could notice there was an environment although from the start it might have been no more than foggy shades.
I can’t think of anything more spiritual than a picture, a human face, a river, a tree. For an otherwise silent spirituality I must say it’s an excellent way to communicate.
This is the fascinating thing with pictures, you come so close to the nothingness in being, and yet, if you stop seeing it as a picture and look at it as matter – this works very well too as a picture is matter – and matter are pictures.
I have no intention to argue that there ever has been a human Mind thinking in words without help of a physical brain. And when you come down to what is the bottom of it all, the pictures, we have this fact that a picture is both Mind and Matter depending how you look at it. To divide them up is not possible. If you not…
You have raised a question that needs a more specified answer but before doing so I have to catch my breath…

Oops - I've made an important corrections. Sorry for my careless typing.

talkfact,
In your criticism of cognitive science, do you mean that minds exist as some sort of thing apart from brains?
Has there ever been a shred of evidence any where to support such an idea? No. There has NEVER been a thought or any other mind-like thing apart from a physical brain. Does the concept of a mind apart from any material reality even make sense?

We might NOT like these answers, but that does not make them untrue. The truth is not determined by human likes and dislikes. Running in fear from truths we don't like is not spiritual, it's just cowardice or a delight in ignorance.

The picture is the foundation of everything

FelixQui:This is an answer to you.

1)To understand and comprehend something you must have a picture.
2)To create something you need a picture to start with.
3)To achieve or change something you need a picture, if not, how in the world would you know what you are aiming at?
4)Our Mind works with pictures. We think in pictures (not in words).
5)Every individual has a mission to develop his or hers own pictures. Otherwise there is no development.
6)A picture that is true of your self (your self) is not narrow, ugly, kooky or stilted.
7)In the beginning there was the picture (not the words).

I don’t mind Plato but I do mind the rhetoric’s of Socrates, being misused the way it is today. A popular trend in the West is using rhetoric to obscure and demolish facts, not to make them clearer.

TomFin: ”It’s not a philosophy of anything.” That’s partly right. I just listed a few neglected facts.

I think it’s rarely possible that the world should deteriorate by pointing at a few neglected facts. The only situation in which it can deteriorate is when facts are obscured.
Among the facts I was mentioning is that humans think in pictures (and so do many other living creatures on this earth - only to much more limited degree). Our consciousness has risen from this fact that we think in pictures.
It’s this fact that is being used in self-help methods. And rightly so. They just point to a fact (by using an overload of words though).

By pointing at certain neglected facts I say things like: Science is hopelessly erratic in its view of the human mind. An example is the present “Cognitive Science”. Its foundation is totally false when it says that our Mind should be viewed similar to a programmed computer, a robot. This is not more true than saying that our Mind should be viewed as a chemical lab, a pharmacy. Or hundreds of other views. All this implies that Science isn’t making progress; it’s just going in circles and with it takes the whole Western world. You need a compass when you get lost, the Western world has lost its. Note: what I didn’t say here was that Cognitive Science doesn’t work. It works in the same way as taking a pill works. The problem is just that it doesn’t help you Mind to develop. Those methods put your Mind to sleep. And when talking about deterioration you should list the sleeping Mind at the top of the list.

wch: If you look at a Japanese corporation from a distant external point of view theymight not differ much from a Western world corporation but looking at the inner life of the corporation I certainly believe more in the Japanese version.
Why? Because the Japanese still have the inner life of an Easterner. And in the long run that pays.
I see no inner life in an average Executive in the Western world. I see only the bank account, their private bank account, not that of the corporation itself. I see fusions between big corporations and how the salaries of the Executives doubles. I see how those Executives are running the Western world in these days and how the politicians have given up their case. The main interest, then, for the leaders of the Western world, the Executives that is, is their private bank account. And this I see as the very opposite to spirituality. I see those people like Stone Age people. The fact that in these days they are our leaders implies that our so called civilization are heading backwards instead of forwards. In any case I think we can agree that there is no direction at all as a bank account cannot be said to be a direction.
United States is a good example. There’s no doubt that this country is led by the Multinational companies and that the politicians are nothing but obedient servants.

It looks like the training course of Japanese corporate newcomers.
I may give another trick to manage your life,
Life Planning Bar chart.
Draw a line of your life span, mark the age you marry and add her life span too, mark the age you have children, mark when you are promoted to a manager position,--------.
Under it, also financing plan including my-home, travel around globe and so on.
You may share the photocopy with your family as well as giving it to your corporate HR manager.

This file continues for a life and you will be surprised, one day corporate welfare manager call you in and quietly say "Now you have a child and you may need a condo ---".

Why would a new picture be any better than an old one? Becasue we want it? I want a lot of things: more money, more sex, more peace, more happiness, more knowledge, more ... Why on earth should we think all these are good just because we want them or just because they are new?
Why must a new picture be any less constricting, narrow, ugly, stlited or kooky than an old one?

It all sounds a bit like drivel to me, with all due respect.

I think if you read Plato instead of pop psychology and pseudo-spiritual money spinners you would gain more useful insights. And learn something about what philosophy really is and can be. I would recommend the Socratic dialogues to start with. Then work backwards and forwards.

It is not philosophy of anything. It is a rehash of 10,000 self-help books. For many of us, it is the stuff that allows us to understand why the world is deteriorating. And since knowledge, understanding, is a good thing, keep writing. I do enjoy understanding the mind of a pablum fed soul.
