Jonathan Head and Lese Majeste

The BBC has rejected Thai police allegations that one its corresondents insulted His Majesty the King, a charge that can result to 15 years in jail.

The lese majeste complaint, filed by a police lieutenat-colonel, alleges the British broadcaster's Southeast Asia correspondent Jonathan Head " intentionally criticised the monarchy several times."

The complaint also claims Mr. Head, a British journalist with more than 12 years experience in Southeast Asia, was part of an anti-monarchy " consipircay" involving former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who was ousted in a coup in 2006.

"The allegations made against Janathan Head are completly unfounded," BBC Asia Burea editor Paul Danahar said in a statement.

" The BBC understands that the police in Thailand are required to investigate all complaints of lese majeste, and will co-operate with that investigation," he said.

" But it is very upsetting that his work should be incorrectly presented in this way and it has caused great distress to both him and his family."

The May 30 complaint, filed by Pol Lt-Col Watanasak Mungkijakandee, says Mr.Head's reporting from 2006 to 2008 " damaged and insulted the reputation of the mornachy".

One of his specific complaints relates to the placing of a picture of Mr. Thaksin above a picture of the King on the BBC website www.bbc.co.uk, in contravention of a Thai convention that images of the monarch must always be at the top.

On the contrary, it is exactly the sort of thing that the BBC will, and should, publicise. If it comes to court, it will get plenty of international media attention.

I dictate a vicious attempt, pulling in BBC into the case, in order to delute the case.
The initial investigation report made my the local level police investigators was not more than the witness for BBC.

BBC must refuse their interreaction with this case.
Silence is a good speech.

All I can say is that some police lieutenant-colonels don't have enough real work to do. Either that or they are seeking publicity for themselves.

Ian,
It was probably someone else who did the layout and the Editor approved it.

Yet the policeman is alleging several incidents.
Somebody wants to make a point or cause trouble.

However,

BBC Asia Burea editor Paul Danahar,

made serious violation in Thailand if he ordered Jonathan to organize the interview with Jakrapob on that serious time and place where when the Thai political tension was at peak, and though knowing the Jak's restive attitude to the democratic monarchiac, political system.

I kept telling the silliness of BBC's ever since.
BBC must pull out the aunties from the kitchen and send them to the reeducation camp,

Yuri, what I mean is the editor decides the page layout, not the reporter. Or am I totally misinformed?

Ian,
No confusion.Sometines your application of logic misses the point.
Thaksin is an International Freemason;how do you think a poor copper made billions?
Thailand has been controlled by them since the flag changed to the Tricolor;Blue,Red,White Lodge.
Thaksin makes the 33rd degree hand signal publically.
There is more to this. The journalist does as he is told.
In some ways you are naive.

Yuri, are you not confusing the role of a reporter with that of an editor?

I agree with Pol Lt-Col Watanasak Mungkijakandee.
There is an anti-monarchy " consipircay" involving former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
Jonathan Head('Dick' to his friends) is hardly an innocent journalist. Even in the UK if he put a picture of Tony Baloni(Blair) above Her Majesty the Queen, it would br frowned upon.
Foreign Correspondents occasionally have connections with intelligence services, MI6(SIS). Journalism is often used as a cover. Perhaps certain interests have an agenda to aid Thaksin. To say this is but imagination does not reflect on the realities of the trade of journalism.

Does not one level headed person exist in power in Thailand. Does no one in power realise how foolish this makes them look?

I agree. Jonathan tried to correct Jakrapob when Jak surprising ments were released.

I think Jonathan has sound recent history about Thailand, especially the incident of 1992 and the HM's intervention, the first and the last of such by HM the King.

Clearly, the Thai ambassador to the UN has been remiss. If the government has a shred of loyalty, it will instruct the ambassador to immediately move a resolution that all nations must conform to Thai conventions in the placing of photographs in all media. This will not only prevent further such lapses, but will boost Thailand's international reputation every bit as much as will this latest charge of lese majeste.
