Good Bye Prachatai.com, Good Bye Freedom, and Welcome to the Land of Fears
Posted by Ginola , Reader : 1493 , 12:42:40
Print

I did not blog here for quite some time, but the recent arrest of the prachatai.com web editor and the subsequent closure of the website really really angered me.

I may not be a big fan of Prachatai, but I do read some of the stuff on the website from time to time. They have some pretty good articles and insightful interviews that stimulate thoughts and wisdom.

Unfortunately, the Thai authorities do not seem to share my views. They don't seem to see freedom of speech and political freedom as basic rights of the people.

I don't have much to say any more; I'm just scared. Thailand has become the "land of fears", and I should keep my mouth shut and continue with my life by supporting the government "for the sake of the economy and the country."

Just to repeat the title: Good bye prachatai, good bye freedom and welcome to the "land of fears."

It seems Thailand and it's citizens are determined to lose any national identity they ever had. What is it coming to when a society is fast becoming divided by colour. First it was the yellows taking over places and now the blues have formed to stopping a possible red take over of the airport.
One cannot help but liken this to childish behavious.....sad.

I also love Thailand but not the current self seeking group in control, not that previous groups were any better. I don't like this LM nonsense and morons like peacefulness who have no understanding of intelligent debate.

Thank you for noting that I don't understand your comments. I think we have grounds for agreement there.

May I in turn ask just two simple questions o tclarify my suspicions?

1. Do you think that if something looks beautiful that it is also morally attractive?

2. Do you think that if something is legal it is also just?

I've tried to make them very simple Yes/No questions.
A photograph of rice grains, however tastefully doctored, will not be a clear answer, but Yes or No would be.

Obsessive compulsive disorder triggered by word associations. That sounds a good supposition.
One can extend this further, there are now available several programs which can create the semblance of "intelligent" communication. This hooked in to a RSS feed from the Nation would account for much of "Peacefulness's" output.

Two theories:

(1) more likely - Peaceful was originally admitted to psychiatry for having tried to teach frogs the Santi Asoke version sufficiency economy (eating ground). Local police decided not to charge him with animal torture for stuffing the frogs as he was obviously insane.

Peaceful stopped taking his medication after he was released from a mental institution because that had to shut down because Chalerm's son (who cannot write) failed to sign any budget plans... Without his medication acute paranoia and obsessive compulsive disorder have taken over.

(2) less likely but equally interesting - he's really Yoon's alter ego that comes out whenever a keyword such as freedom or democracy or Thaksin shows up somewhere. If the later were true we should know shortly...

But peacefulness, your comments are either: false, lying, irrelevant or nonsense.
I think that covers all the possibilities I've seen to date.
False: your weird belief that if something is legal it is also just and morally right.
Irrelevant: most photos you post.
Nonsense: when you try to make an argument.
Lying: some of your falsehoods, especially with regard PAD and Mao, cannot be accidental: you must be aware that you are making false statements and doing so with deliberate intent to deceive.

peacefulness oldman, 49: I never specifically said that your comments are nonsense, but it seems that you are admitting it yourself.

And for all your pics, I don't have time to look around websites and find pictures of what the yellow shirts have done and post them here. I've seen quite a number of them and it's much worse than what you posted here.

That isn't to say that I agree with everything the red shirts do though. it's only to point out that the worst crimes have been committed by the PAD. the red shirts never seize an airport or break into government house or ministries.

In response to your ct 50, I would honestly say that all your writings suggest that you're a blinded person who doesn't understand the obvious, doesn't use reasons, doesn't believe in democracy and doesn't truly care about Thailand and its people.

And being a civil servant means I serve the people and the country's interests. I don't serve politicians, but unfortunately I do have to live with them. Most importantly, my writings here are my personal opinion. When I serve as a civil servant, I wear another hat and I am a professional. In other words, my political view doesn't interfere with my work.

C9: I think any discussion about toilet graffiti pulls the level down to the current political basement we are used to see flickering across the TV screen every night.

As for monuments: well anyone who drove by the Victory Monument lately and asked himself how that page of the history book got written.

How about all those monuments that no one ever dared to build? Where's the one for the thousands of dead in the South? Where's the one for the many dead environmentalists? Where is the one for the missing students of the 70ies?

I think that fear has been undermining freedom of speech more and more in the last couple of years. Especially, the more liberal and open minded people are often the target of mobbing and will be the first ones to experience the authoritarian trends first hand.

So it's a bit surreal - like in one of these movies a la 1984 or V - the first attacks go against those that would have the guts to stand up and say no but what you hear and see is just the whitewashed lies of a media propaganda machine that spends no time on reporting political prisoners, human rights violations and restrictions on civil liberties.

Some people who know and let other known about it slowly make it onto black lists or are driven into the underground.

Many that try to speak up are discredited, mobbed or even exiled or jailed. If you let the far right have it - they would like these voices silenced anyway.

Strange - it is happening today and there is no widespread public outcry beyond the red shirt movement.

The later fails to attract a wider audience due to its proximity to Thaksin. But what I want to say here is that the defense of democracy would deserve a much wider alliance.

All tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good conscience to remain silent.
- Thomas Jefferson

When the people fear their government, there is tyranny; when the government fears the people, there is liberty.
= Thomas Jefferson

That is exactly what those people at the top want most of you guys to be: fear that the economy is gonna get worsen, fear of the Lese Majeste law, fear of expressing yourself because deep down inside these people are afraid of the change. They are afraid that they will loose power and popularity.

Some people say that The above Jefferson’s believes are the fundamental of the second amendment of the constitution of the United States: the right to bear arms. Now a day citizen can not overturn a government with just hand guns and rifles. But I still think Thailand has proven the statements to be true, even though it’s been 233 years later.

Ginola - I think on balance it is good thinking not to say too much regarding the Thai political system. I don't know your nationality, but as far as farangs go, if we were 'citizens' with voting rights then I would certainly voice my opinion more. To voice one's opinion as a contributing farang (definitely not a guest) gets met with phrases such as 'if you don't like it leave' or 'you are not Thai don't tell us how to run our country'. Whilst this naive mentality exists, I say that any farang living here should get what he or she can from the country and try to put something back.
