Today is Obama's Inauguration Day. I am here in Washington D.C., having just returned from a two-week field trip in Indonesia yesterday. Back in Indonesia, where Obama spent 4 of his childhood years, the excitement about Obama is high. Indonesians expect Obama's presidency to benefit Indonesia. But the truth is Indonesians are overly excited and overly optimistic about Obama. True enough, unlike most other Presidents of the US, Obama can speak some Indonesian words, has an Indonesian step father and know where Indonesia is on the world map. But unless Indonesia comes up with a clear objective of what it wants from the US, the relationship between the two countries will likely remain the same or only slightly better. Indonesians need to come up with one thing that they want the most from the US and work on it with the Obama administration. ......... Here in D.C., streets close to the National Mall are crowded with people. Never before have I seen D.C. to be so alive. Hotel rooms are fully booked with visitors. TV stations are showing everything about the Inauguration, even the news that a woman's puppy has chewed her Inaugural ticket! Americans, too, are very excited and optimistic about Obama and his Inauguration. Yet, The expectations among the public are probably too high given the difficult circumstances. After all, this is just the beginning of the long, tough road ahead. Obama is a man, not a god - he certainly won't fix all problems and should he fail to successfully guide America out of the economic crisis and two wars, the outcomes can be catastrophic. ......... Inauguration is an important day. This Inauguration is even more important because of Obama - his rise to Presidency and his exceptional oratorial skills. However, the real challenge he faces is not whether he delivers a great Inauguration speech, as very much anticipated by the public. The real test lies in what he does 4 years from now as the President of a powerful country in a very difficult time. So, although the Capitol is about a 20-minute walk from my apartment, I probably won't be attending the Inaugural today. It is an important event that the public is excited about, but it is almost irrelevant to how well America will progress. Plus, with the 2-million crowd outside and the cold temperature of about -5 degree celcius, I would rather watch the event on TV at home! |
