Abhisit and His Avoidance of Military Service
Posted by Ginola , Reader : 833 , 18:33:36

The most controversial issue about the new PM, in my view, is the fact that he avoided compulsory military service and his attempt to correct it involves the faking of the evidence.

English-born, Eton and Oxford-educated, Abhisit is one of the many Thai elites and middleclasses who can afford to get around serving in the military. Here are the FACTS:

- Abhisit did not report himself when he needed to for military draft process in 1987. Thus, he did not have the document called Sor Dor 43 which indicates that a person has gone through the conscription process (whether or not he is recruited).

- Later on he tried to fix this by applying for a teaching position at the Military Academy. He attempted to resign from that position after just 35 days, clearly showing his intention of not wanting to serve in the military but just wanting to get around the military service.

- The above application process, however, was ruled illegal. To be eligible to join the Military Academy, a person older than 21 must have a Sor Dor 43. For some reason, Abhisit was admitted to the teaching position based on a faked Sor Dor 43. The application process was thus illegal and the military officers involved in the application process have already been punished.

- Thus, Abhisit dodged the military draft and illegally became a lecturer at the Military Academy for very short period of time just to fix the fact that he missed the draft.

I assume this case is too old to be legally active. I would also acknowledge that many other Thais get around military service using similar means.

But for a PM - with whom we should expect higher moral standards - I think this is unacceptable. Military drafting is an important process that every man, according to the rule of law, must go through. Abhisit's avoidance of military service may be a mistake in the past, but it will come and haunt him forever.

One might say: if he has to choose between Thaksin and a military draft dodger, he would go for the latter. My point is not about choosing between the two though. It's about principles and values.

comment33-- as normal practice for those hv not finished their studies both locally/internationlly or some drafters may hv some kind of obligations that force them to carry on, these people hv the right to defer on the conscrition day to the later years, many movie stars did it.

for abhisit's case, 21years ago he was 23yrs young, just be fair to him, he may not know that he will be minister attached to pm ofc 1999 and even the 27th prime minister of thailand 2008. see no reason that he wanted to be a draft dodger in 1987.
just "let by gones by by gones".

that is why i posted the case of president bush and president bill clinton of usa to study. tks a million

Ct32:

What you said is right but as I mentioned in my blog, the process of Abhisit becoming the lecturer was illegal, involving faked document. Basically, Abhisit did not have the qualification to be a lecturer at the Academy. The investigation to the case was concluded and the military officers involved were punished. Nothing happened to Abhisit though, and you wonder why...

Abhisit does have the SubLt rank but he never uses it. Why? Well, he simply doesn't want to remind everyone about this!

The legal case is probably too old to be active, after 20 years have passed.

comment31--- during h.e.chuan's administration 1999-- mr abhisit/v was a minister attached to prime minister office. mr kamol bandaipet a legal advisor to aspiration pty(later merged with trt) alleged abhisit had dodged the draft on07apr1987, Mr Abhisit argued then that he was not a draft dodger because he later served in the military as a lecturer at the military academy.

His claim was backed by then-army chief Surayud Chulanont.

Gen Surayud said Mr Abhisit did not intend to dodge conscription as he had joined the army and served as a lecturer a few months after the conscription date.

above just fyi. right or wrong let the court judges do the rests if the three bottle-headed jatuporn/veera/natawaut (ÊÒÁà¡ÅÍËÑǢǴ) should raise the case in court.

further more , abhisit/v holds the military rank as a
Sub-Lt.

soldier boy lyric

Soldier boy why feel blue
Don't you believe that she will be true
It's written in the blue
That she was meant for only you

Soldier boy tell me why do you cry
When you return she'll rush to your side
It's written in the book
That she was meant for only you

So prove your love is true
She'll be there to say "I do"
And if you go o'er sea or land
She'll make you understand

While you're gone oh try to believe
Her love for you is really for real
It's written in the book
That she was meant for only you

So prove your love is true
She'll be there to say "I do"
And if you go o'er sea or land
She'll make you understand

While you're gone oh try to believe

u GUYS know that president Bush was a "draft dodger"??????????????????????

Qte

President George W. Bush is a draft dodger. And his cowardice is the worst kind. Mr. Bush avoided both combat and making any kind of political statement on the War in Vietnam. While others served, giving their lives and limbs, or took part in a protest movement to end the war, the president's family connections got him a safe spot in the Texas Air National Guard. This is not the profile of a leader.

Unqte

When recently asked about this military draft controversy, General Anupong said that the case is over but he never said that Abhisit did not avoid military service.

Abhisit himself also said recently that he explained this thing 6-7 years ago already and his explanation would not change. He said that he taught at the Military Academy already.

Well the fact remains that he didn't go to the drafting process and then after he applied and became a lecturer (for a very short time) at the Military Academy, it was ruled that his application process was illegal and the military officers involved in overseeing the application were punished.

According to the Thai law, avoiding conscription could result in up to 3-year imprisonment.

I hope the media look into this closely, but don't worry, I think the "Truth Today" people will look into it and will present the story to the public soon enough.

A person serving for his motherland should be a for love and pride! Why would someone 'pretend' to serve the country if not for the people. So, i'm seeing a contradict situation for Abishit. He couldn't serve the nation those days, and he wanted to be a PM to serve the nation.
I think Thai military only need poor people to serve the frontline, so keep the poor remain poor is a choice. But it's a bad choice from my opinion.
Captain: Abishit, get back to the barrack and push-up 100 times now before show your face on the screen! Abishit: I don't want !! I can only be PM, I'm higher class than you !

Alien C18,

It's the point of what I or Ian want, the point is this country cannot accept a nominated PM not can they accept a PM that came into place by conspiracy. Even if I can accept the fact that he is now the PM. Will the rest accept it? Read the latest SMS msgs from e-san province? UBON- don't come in, we don't want you. Chiang Mai- Make your move, we have a present waiting for you. Chaiyapum- we are all ready for you to come in. If you can understand Thai, read the sms on your TV screen. you'll enjoy it....GTD

Alien, I am not sure why you directed your comment 18 at me. I am not Thai so need no healing or reconciliation. My simple observation is that the Democrats have seized power by dubious means, but this seems normal in Thailand so is hardly a criticism of them. However, my observations where reconciliation is concerned is that since gaining power they seem to be concentrating on punishing any Red they can identify whilst ignoring equally indentifiable Yellows. Call me simple minded if you wish but this does not seem like the actions of a party seeking reconciliation.

Thai Military service is the compulsory report system when the age is due and the recruiting is via selective system.

Among populace of due age, a half million, annual recruitment is not more than 50,000.

The problem is if the system could utilize human resource effectively, or NOT.

Higher educated men must get through certain training system to be an commanding officers when in war time (like USA's R.O.T.C.). This officer training program will educate more morally matured and managing-able men who functions in the society and future organization where he would work.

Higher educated personnel should be NOT subscripted as an ordinary field battle soldiers or it is sheerly waste of national resource but must find more productive method to use them.

Anyhow if Abhisit intentionally avoided the 'compulsory report' when his age was due, it is his mistake and he must explain properly to the society.

In general, Thai society is pretty dishonesty society and so are the people and Not-reporting of it is not big deal in long social practice but he must recognize he is now a PM. The morality degree to be a PM is such higher and he must respond to it.

This will be interesting to watch.

If the facts presented in this blog are accurate and this had happened in a country where honour was highly valued, he would have to resign. No question...

The thing is, this has happened in a country where being above the law is admired...

Come on guys, stop nit picking, he has waited a long time for this opportunity to be PM. We should all shut up and give him his chance...

(I am so sick of hearing that last phrase!)

Oh dear, and we all thought he was an honest person who did not abuse his position as a member of the Bangkok elite born to power, property and prestige.

It might be small, but so was the great cookery scandal that cost Samak the PM's position a month or so ago.
If this is true, a man of principle would resign on principle, even if the courts did not apply the same strict rule of law that ousted Samak. This is exactly the sort of thing that the world is watching for closely. Abhisit can afford to be seen to be treated more leniently than were Samak and Somchai.

I hope the Nation and other mass media do their job and pursue this, as the courts must if they are to prove that they are indeed impartial and not being influenced to treat different people and groups differently.

Healing process? Is that the joke of the day? He has done nothing yet that even looks like undoing to the harm wrought by the PAD in their determination to undermine both democracy and the rule of law.

My brother-in-law attended a sort of week-end camp because he was just plain scared of military service. He did this legally,as he was working at a Government utility. My point is that it is not all that critical. I hope something like this does not derail the healing process which is about to begin.
