Ending PAD and the Need for a New Social Movement

The rule of law has been applied to the PPP - it has been disbanded through the legal system.

This decision shows that we do have the legal, peaceful means through which politicians can be punished. This makes the PAD's airport seizures even more ridiculous, unnecessary and unjustifiable. It should never have happened, and it did nothing good at all.

The rule of law must be applied to all parties alike, be they Thaksin, PPP, red shirts or the PAD. For the PAD, its leaders must be held legally responsible for the damage their actions have inflicted on the people and the country.

If the PAD leaders are allowed to go free after what they have done, Thailand is at great risk to witness similar social movement that is illegal and costly in the future. The PAD's means of protesting cannot be allowed to set an example for future protests.

The Thai society also needs a new social movement to provide checks to the government. This new social movement shall adhere to the rule of law when protesting.

It shall criticize the government constructively based on evidence and reasons. It shall respect the rights of fellow citizens and stick to the democratic principles. It shall never seize airports or threaten to cut off utilities or close down train stations. It shall use the legal means to fight government ills. It shall not define its goal as removing a government but rather making the government more effective and responsive in solving people's problems.

We need this new social movement to replace the PAD. The PAD leaders clearly do not understand democracy and are completely disrespectful of others who disagree with the PAD. This new social movement is possible since there are many people in the society who are neither pro-government nor PAD but want to participate politically.

If the PAD gathers again it will only be disastrous for the country. We are in need of a truly democratic social movement (or more than one such movements) if our democratic politics is to progress.

Ian, re. c.3,
I agree absolutely.
If the courts are not be a laughing stock, the same rule of law must be applied to teh PAD.

And the civil damages suits should easily wipe out Sonthi and Chamlong. And the courts must also go after any backers without prejudice or passion. Or cowardice.

FOS: I understand and share much of your frustration. I am aware how the whole legal system has been thwarted or manipulated. The 2006 coup, General Prem, Thaksin, PAD, UAAD - all of these things and people have done the whole democratic and legal system no good. The present constitution in my view doesn't even have legitimacy since its origin is unlawful. I am also aware that the PPP government has been elected popularly and I respect the majority vote. I also know the Democrats are not very good either. You know all these from my previous writings.

Having said all those things, I believe they are all "sunk costs". We must stop this whole "revenge" business at some point. None of the sides can continue to fight lawlessness with lawlessness. I believe we must stick to the law as it stands now, even though the law is imperfect and has been thwarted by powerful political forces.

The ideal situation for me is that there should be a new wave of social movements that push for new political reforms.

What it should be done as you say "democratically" didn't happen nor will it ever happen. If you look deeply enough, you should not only be crticising the PAD and many that were involved.

Sometime I really don't understand you educated, you guys seem to cornor yourself at one point and focus on one person or one subject and never look around you of what's really going on. WHY? All you guys have in your mind is Somchai, PAD, Thaksin, UAAD or whatever D's there is and nothing else. What happen to all the rest of the Thai's, they're all dead?

I can only accept the disbanding of the PPP if I now see the PAD leaders get equally swift and punitive treatment. No Piddling fines, but serious imprisonment. Only then will I believe the Law is not biased.
