As I am sitting here in my apartment overlooking the streets of Washington D.C., I keep hearing cheers from people and car horns being sounded constantly. Of course, they are celebrating the fact that "change has come to America." Barack Obama is the 44th President of the U.S. It has been a privilege for me to have followed this election campaign right here in Washington D.C. to the very end. Throughout the campaign, I am inspired by the power of American democracy. Indeed, America has many flaws, but their strongly held values and beliefs in democracy, in civil liberty, and the belief that "all men are created equal", have been clearly reflected in this election. When I see people lining up, in some cases for hours, just to vote, I feel inspired. When I see people cheering and hugging in celebration of Obama's victory, I feel inspired. When I look into the eyes of the people as they listen to Obama's victory speech, I am inspired. For the first time ever, an African-American was elected to lead the most powerful country in the world. A nation that just decades ago was actively engaged in racial discrimination has fundamentally changed to one that judges people by their abilities, not the color of their skins. In the past, a black person might have realistically dreamed of being astronaut or NBA star. But becoming a president? That was probably way too much. But clearly that is no longer the case. Change has indeed come to America. Mr.Bush, whom most young Americans and the world hate so much, is gone. Hopefully, with Obama in office, change will come to the world too. |
