A Siamese in Paris, 1684

Notre Dame de Paris.George Gershwin once wrote a piece of music called "An American in Paris" that aimed to capture the sights and sounds of the French capital in the 1920s. Having been in Paris for more than a couple of weeks now, I sometimes wonder what a piece called "A Siamese in Paris" would sound like. Especially if it was written in 1684.I say 1684 because that was the year....

Weekend Trip!

After all the terribly serious domestic and foreign political talk, I've decided to post something different that some people might enjoy.Last weekend I went to Sangkhlaburi in Kanchanaburi province for some work and just to explore another corner of Thailand I haven't been to. Most people probably haven't heard of it, but the area is home to the Three Pagodas Pass, on the border to Burma. Any histor....

In Praise of the Rose Apple

On the occasion of Thailand getting a new prime minister (finally), I tucked into a rose apple or as the Thais call it, "Chom-poo" and was inspired to write a blog on it.Come to think of it, I've always liked rose apples they're so...red and...prominent; like blood from bleeding noses (of students and pesky protesters); or may be Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer who had a very shiny and promi....
